  • FAQ...how do we convince loved ones that atkins is right for us?

I have to admit, and this might sound terrible, but the reason I cheated two days ago was because of my boyfriend.

I hadn't told him I was going on Atkins, but obviously, he noticed I had been eating funny. He knows I have been trying to lose weight, so he was complimenting that I'd been eating well (lots of salads).

Then we're sitting down studying, and he says "why don't we order wings?" (buffalo wings from a local place). And at first, I was confident in my "no thanks", until he started saying "steph, its ok to eat things like this in moderation. you've been doing really well all week. If you don't eat in moderation, then you'll eventually binge on the food you've been depriving yourself of."

He also throws out the "you look great" line a lot...

How do you guys respond to this?

my BF used to do that. Then, I convinced him to go on the diet with me (using the Stanford study that came out a couple of months ago) and I read to him the part of the Dr. Atkins book where it talks about your well meaning friends and relatives who say "this one bite won't hurt you." He smiled at me and said "that sounds like me."

He hasn't done it since. Food is so emotional though - he used to get really hurt if I wouldn't eat part of what he made for me. Even though I would tell him that I couldn't.

READ HIM THE BOOK. OUT LOUD. He has to get on board with this - tell him it's just for a little while and then keep extending it - we all know how to do that, right?

Call me Suzy, Suzy-Q or Suzanna Banana - but let's not talk about bananas too much!

Re: FAQ...how do we convince loved ones that atkins is right for us?

I am sneaky, but then I have gone through teenagers 3 times, another one coming up, and well, the hubby ranks right up there with the teenagers.... so, what I did was leave a copy of the DANDR in the bathroom, no hot rod books, no rc car books, what else was he to do! He has always supported me, but this time, after him looking at the book (even if he skims it, he is gleaning info), he is being even more supportive and is following my lead.

Another way, let him eat some of the super yummy stuff that is on Atkins. Yesterday, being Cinco de Mayo, thought tacos! so, out came the cheese and I started making a 'taco' shell for me, and I had his sitting there too, the corn ones, he wanted mine. It made me laugh. My son loves the Revolutionary Roll danishes.... There are some wonderful recipes on this site and I am trying at least one a day. Last time I did Atkins, I didn't read the book, I just kind of winged it, big mistake....

Yes, I will convert them, it will just take time, but once I do, they will both love me for it.

A lot of people think that Atkins is a bad fad diet, all they know about it is the rumors of high fat, meat only, blah, blah, blah.... obviously, they have not read the book and realized that vegetables, fruits, nuts, dairy, even whole grains are allowed, just in steps.

My husband has also seen the success stories and pics on this site, I drive the poor man nuts, 'come look at this one!' I yell all the time. Gosh, I have gotten on a tangent, haven't I, okay, my point is, educate, educate, educate!

One of the hardest things about chosing atkins is the response you get when people find out.....and the way they handle it. Especially at first, this WOE is even hard for US to wrap our brains around. We have to let go of EVERYTHING we've been taught about what is good and bad for us and live by a whole new set of rules.

I live w/ my best friend and her husband, and when she and I started eating this way, he made such fun of us. "I thought you pigs were on a DIET? You'll never lose weight eating all that fat"! (yes, unfortunately, this is what we deal with) She was a size 12 then, on a 5'3" frame. Imagine how amazed he was when she slid on a size 4 from eating "all that fat"!!!

You do what you KNOW will work, stick to it, live it, breath it...be religious about it and ignore the people around you. In just a short time they will start seeing the results and realize you know what your doing.

My husband has done this.. and I say YES it will affect me.. It will make me have to start back over and its not worth having.. This is a way of life..One day you might be able to have an occassional wing...but not now...

My husband has gotten better.. I tell him I pretty much can't have bread, potatoes, and sugar...
