  • I feel like such a hypocrite!!

Yesterday I volunteered with a church youth group at the Food Bank. I should feel good about it, right? Actually, I feel kinda funny about it. I spent all morning going through boxes of donated food, sorting it, and packing like items into other boxes. Almost all the boxes were crackers and cookies and cereal that we packed up to be delivered. They were mostly damaged boxes from grocery stores or manufacturers. It was ALL food that I now consider to be unfit for my consumption, and yet I packed it all up to give to programs that feed the poor. They must receive other food too, maybe on other days, but yesterday every single thing was "carbage." Instead of feeling good, I feel kinda guilty, like an enabler!!

I can imagine just how you felt, but I don't think you should. The people who receive the donated food probably don't have enough for survival and even carby foods can tide them over, hopefully until they hit better times.

It's a shame, but we can't change the world in a day. Kudos to you for volunteering to help others.

I CAN RELATE. LAST SATURDAY WAS THE NATIONAL LETTER CARRIER'S FOOD DRIVE (BY THE WAY, I'M A LETTER CARRIER) I DONATED ALL THE CARB LADENED FOOD AT MY HOUSE. ON THE ONE HAND I FEEL GOOD FOR HELPING OTHERS. ON THE OTHER HAND I FEEL LIKE IT MIGHT BE BETTER TO JUST THROW THE JUNK AWAY. BUT, I GUESS THE MAIN THING TO REALIZE IS THAT NOT EVERYONE HAS A WEIGHT PROBLEM. NOT ALL PEOPLE ABUSE FOOD LIKE SOME OF US DO. SO, I SAY DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.
      Starting over...again.

Yeah, don't feel bad. They can only collect non-perishable food items... most of the food we eat is whole, perishable food. Can't stick that in a food barrel or leave it out for the mail carrier to pick up.

Good for you giving at all!

I understand how you feel, it is hard to send people food we know is unhealthy for them . But people with no money who need that food really have not got eating healthy on thier mind , they are trying to feed thier kids and carbs are cheap and with the donated food, free.
So do not feel bad, right now that food is all those people have and one day maybe they will learn and be able to eat the healthy foods we have learned to eat. Until then, you are helping people and should not feel bad at all !!
