  • Highest weight ever!

Well, guys, I am back. And this time it took several months of neglect and a scale for me to make the decision.

I did great on Atkins last year. I got down to my lowest weight of 159. But 2007 has just been days and days of gluttony. I seriously have resorted to eating anything I want, anything. Granted I don't have a huge stomach, but I do eat MANY things constantly. If I want a box of sugary cereal, if I want fudge popsicles, if I want CAKE or PIE, I'll just eat it. If we don't have it and I crave it, I'll GO OUT to the store to BUY it. This is pathetic.

So I weighed myself last night and I'm at my HIGHEST WEIGHT EVER. 185. I look it, too. My stomach is huge. I feel lethargic all the time. I just... don't look as good, even if I try very hard to look good. My jeans barely fit.

I have gained 25 pounds since my last successful experience with Atkins. I am ashamed of myself. I really want to do this for good, but I think I have a serious problem with compulsively overeating. I felt so good when I was on Atkins, but now starting it seems so difficult. My sister is taking me to a Sushi restaurant tonight in honor of my moving out of state for college, and my boyfriend is taking me to a fancy restaurant which is famous for its desserts for our anniversary.

I don't know how I'm going to go about this, but I know this has to stop. I will NOT let myself get to 200! or even 190. I can't.

Welcome back! As you know already from doing Atkins previously the cravings will stop. For alot of us carbs make us eat out of control because they cause cravings for more and more carbs. So don't beat yourself up over eating too much.
Perhaps you could tell your boyfriend that you would love to celebrate your anniversary not by going to a fancy resteraunt but perhaps going to a concert, play, amusement park or anything else that would make the day special. Quite frankly what is a better memory a great tasting steak or a night on the town???
Best of luck no matter what you choose!!!

Keep coming back to these boards. It is an awesome community! I'm with Jess, get yourself to ketosis and get moving (exercising) You will feel sooo good. Eventually, new habits will form and the cravings/addiction to carbs and sugar will go away.

Kitty, I understand what you are going through, I went through that for a while last year and the start of this year. If I wanted it , I ate it. No control and even a pretence of control and finally I had to realize I was standing on the edge of health problems if I did not get control, and my hubby felt the same. The first two days were rough, but we are both doing great now and will be a full week cheat free this time tomorrow.
It is hard, you have to decide and we chose health over what we wanted to eat. You can do it !!! Both of us were close to our highest weights as well, it was very scary to me !!
I am glad to be back, it feels good to be back in control !!! Please start now, do not get up to the 240's like I did. I could have stopped it at any time between my normal weight and my highest of 252, but I did not. Please learn from my mistakes and take care of it now before it becomes so much harder !!!

Oh my goodness - it's like you're ME! I was doing EXACTLY what you were doing. Not being told 'no'. I regularly drove to the shop to get a bottle of wine and an ice-cream, and when I bought a packet of chips I had to buy two - and a chocolate bar as well. Am utterly disgusted at myself for this last winter of plain greed - you'd have thought I would have learnt from past experiences.

Well, if you need anyone for a sympathetic ear, just PM me - I assure you, I do know exactly how you feel with the compulsive overeating thing.

I did the same thing, Kitty! I kept eating anything I wanted-past the point when I felt bloated. Then I realized I had to stop! Atkins worked for me the first time, but I didn't stick with. I am committed now! And this board is awesome! I'm kicking myself that I didn't know about it the first time. I might not post anything, but reading it a couple of times daily keeps me going! Thanks GUYS!

Oh - MY - GOODNESS!! You mean you three have an "all-or-nothing" mentality which lets you binge when you are not on low-carb? How disgusting!! Me too!!! On my No-Low-carb days I would go to the grocery store and buy all the things I ever craved and try to stuff them in my fat face on the way home. I still have junk food that I bought just because I felt like "I'm not losing weight anyway." And we all know that they never taste nearly as satisfying as we thought they would. And of course I felt bloated and groggy. Hello, my name is Christine and I'm a carboholic.

Okay, now I'm open to the cure. What is it???

                          Re: Highest weight ever!

I know that is how I am. Low carb, or not low carb. I do not seem to understand a compromise. If I am not eating a healthy low carb diet I am eating everything and anything I want, like Kitty I would go buy it if I wanted it. Your good ole instant gratification when it came to food. I know this is how I have to eat to be in control of my eating. There is not in between for me.
It is hard but I am just taking it day by day and that is the only advice I can give to anyone else, just worry about today and let tomorrow take care of itself and do not worry about the mistakes you made yesterday. It is really all we can do !!! That is what is working for me at least !!!

                            Re: Highest weight ever!

Why, oh WHY do we do that? It should NOT be "all or nothing." It makes no sense at all. Here is the one reason I do it:

If I'm out of ketosis, I might as well enjoy myself.

Now, the logical reasons against it (not that it matters to a true addict, but let's give common sense a try):

Junk food is good for no one. Sugar and refined carbs do your body no good whatsoever and should be avoided by anybody, low carb or not.

Binging just breaks down our resolve for self-control.

                            Makes me feel yukky.

Probably adds 10 lbs instead of 2 or 3, making it more to re-lose.

                            Anyone else?

Honestly I think it is the addiction to the carby foods that kicks in and you just lose all control. that is why a single cheat can turn into a binge that lasts anywhere from days to months .
I know once I cheat on the plan, I feel like now I can eat anything I want. I feel so happy that I am not restricted any more and go nuts with the bad foods and up goes the weight.
My hubby and I are determined that this is a lifestyle change, that we cannot look at it as a diet with an end to it. We have to find ways to eat that makes us happy but keep us on plan. Period. No options.
We are at day eight cheat free today and I am just taking one day at a time, I know for me, thinking ahead can make me panic, but if I just think about today, only today, it is not that hard really. Tomorrow, I will take care of tomorrow. I think that is the only way I am going to make these changes permanant.
