  • Water Retention???

I'm so sorry if this horse has been beat to death. I didn't find anything in a search.

I'm finished with the 14 day induction and plan to stay on the induction for about 100 lbs. more.....

On induction, I lost a whopping 5 pounds. I wasn't thrilled, but always in ketosis--so didn't worry. OVERNIGHT I am back up SIX pounds!!! The only change in diet was that I added some cocktail peanuts--salted. Can you really retain THAT MUCH water?? I've cut out pop after the 14th day and only drink water or some with Crystal Light added. I'm drinking about 80 oz+ every day. Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on? I still feel good, but......???

i don't know what's going on with that...i know that i can retain up to five pounds of water weight just before i begin my period...i would encourage you to not get too freaked out about this...you are still feeling good and that's important. so sorry i don't have anything more productive to tell you. don't give up, don't quit...our bodies are interesting machines and sometimes do things we don't understand...keep nurturing your self and being positive and you will wake up in a few days 8 pounds lighter! i am here for you! stay the course...

Thanks Jen! I guess I just needed to hear that it could possibly be that. Maybe I need to check my calendar! LOL....I really am pretty good about being patient with Atkins. The BEST thing is that I really don't have too many cravings. It hasn't been hard yet this time around and am GLAD for that! It stinks too-- I have to lose about 50 lbs. before anyone notices!!

i am on day 5 of induction and am feeling really good and strong but my scale is not budging at all...and this is very distressing to me. i am not discouraged and have made the committment to keep going but i know that damn scale can really dictate my mood! anyway, i am curious to know how things go for you. keep your chin up! you will and are losing...even if the scale doesn't prove that for you in this moment!

          Hi Pretty Cricket
Sorry to hear you're not having the greatest time with this...maybe try this:
Go to the forums listing and there's one called "Review My Menu". If you post what you've been eating in a day....include every little thing....someone will reply and help you out. You may be taking in hidden carbs that could be sabotaging you.
          Hope this helps!

Hang in there! I also retain almost 5 lbs before my period, and it is really discouraging to see the number on the scale not register what you want. I would stick with it and see where you are in 5 days or so, bet it will be back to your minus 5 (or more!) pounds! Hang in there.

                Re: Water Retention???

                Hi Prettycricket,

Sorry to hear about that - it can very frustrating to gain.

People have said some great stuff about TOM etc, but a couple of things occur. It doesn't sound like you did induction entirely by the book - as only cut out pop after the 14th day? Am I reading that right? But I have no idea what crystal light is?!

Also, if you're planning to stay on induction til 100 lbs gone then peanuts are a no-no. If is a one off cheat then it shouldn't affect your weight loss for long.

I think you need to do a entirely clean 2 week induction - eat or drink nothing but what is on the acceptable food lists. After that how long you stay on it is up to you, but lots of people around here would advise moving up to OWL sooner to prevent boredom, stalls and to learn what you can and can't eat. Loss still occurs in OWL.

Also posting menus etc is a great idea to check you're on track.

Hope you see some more progress (again) soon

                  Re: Water Retention???

Thanks all! I'm certainly not going to stray..... I use Fitday--so I'm hoping it's no hidden carbs. Diet pop is on the induction diet as long as it's sweetened with splenda. I knew that there were no nuts allowed on the 14 Day induction--it was clean. I guess I didn't pay attention to the peanuts and if there is a specific rung that they may be added. I need to check out sunflower seeds also--I want to start adding them back into my salad! Crystal light is a no carb/no sugar flavored powder to add to water. But, I just checked and it is sweetened with aspartame. I'll probably cut it out for awhile and see if I'm one of the individuals that it affects weight loss on! Oh well. Thanks again everyone!!

Ah, I see - I wasn't sure if it was diet pop or not.

You should be able to add back nuts and sunflower seeds in rung 3

hi linda, hope you're feeling better about the water retention. i finished my period this morning and could tell a difference...i am resisting weighing and measuring until sunday b/c i have made the decision that this is better for me. i get too wrapped up in the number on the scale and this can make or break my mental health for the day! but, i read in the dandr last night that our weight fluctuates day to day and even hour to hour...so, i would not worry about it. you are being very proactive and aware and that's the true progress! i'm really proud of you!

                        Re: Water Retention???

Diet soda and Crystal Light, for me specifically, not only stop me in my tracks, but cause me to retain several pounds of water. EVERY TIME. Besides, you don't want to drink that junk. Switch it up to water, straight up, and get all your water in for the day. Drinking my water and staying away from diet soda/crystal light (EVEN if its splenda sweetened), has kept me losing at a brisk pace.

I also noticed, and this is just my own experience, that drinking anything sweetened with splenda made my cravings THAT much more noticeable and harder to control.

I think half my posts have been responding to people asking about Diet Sodas and Crystal Lights now, and I know many people here have no issues at all, but if you're having trouble, I'd definately see if you're sensitive to these!

Oh my goodness!! I'm laughing at Baarb...... I haven't had nondiet pop in about 16 years!!! LOL.....to me the only kind of pop is diet so I didn't think to specify. Oh Lordy----it would be truly bizarre to try a diet and drink sugary soda!!! Thanks for the info on the nuts....dangit. Ryan--I guess that's what I probably need to see.....any anecdotal evidence that it was "bad" (Crystal Light--diet sodas). Because you know there isn't going to be any clincial information on it all. I'm going to stick to just water and see what that does. Thanks Jen! That's a good word for it--proactive. I don't want to keep plugging away making mistakes when I could be PERFECT...LOL.....

Well I think I am currently retaining a few lbs of water because I LOOK puffier and TOM is due this weekend - blech. So while my weigh in should be Sunday, I am staying off the scale unless I see the water bloat go away. I too cannot handle that disappointment sometimes lol!

The salt from the peanuts def could have you retaining as well. It is simply not possible to gain 6 lbs of real weight overnight, or even in a week so it's for sure just water. Drink drink drink and it will come off!
