  • OWL or not to OWL

    Hi everyone:

I wanted to get y'all's opinion on moving on to OWL. I'm in day 14 of induction and I feel good. I don't know my weight or measurements until day 14. I've read that some folks lose more when moving into OWL.

How do you decide to stay in induction or move up into OWL?

    Thanks,

Re: OWL or not to OWL

i am not to this point yet, but my plan is to read the dandr and take the quiz that he suggests. also, i really think he has a good chapter dedicated to thinking this decision through (chapter 13). the quiz i am talking about is referred to in this chapter and he points you to where it is in the book. anyway, how exciting for you! i wish you the best!

Re: OWL or not to OWL

Technically, extending induction is recommending for those who are metabolically resistant--so if you lost weight during induction, you're NOT resistant! Many people choose to stay on induction for a while, and it can be followed healthfully for 6 months. HOWEVER, I highly, HIGHLY recommend moving to OWL!

OWL is the MAIN weighloss phase of Atkins, and it even says so in it's name--Ongoing Weight Loss. The exciting thing about OWL is the opportunity to mold the plan to your tastes and needs. Each of us has a different CCLL (Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing--how many carbs we can eat and still lose weight), different tastes, different food sensitivities, and different exercise regimes. With all of these factors, no two OWL experiences will be identical.

During OWL you take on the role of scientist as well as guinea pig. You test "new" foods to see if they cause adverse reactions; if they do, you know to avoid them, and if they don't, they can become a staple in your diet. Rung 1 of OWL is Veggies, which means you get to add another serving of veggies from the Induction list.

Though many people fear that their weightloss will slow, many people see a jumpstart or boost to their weight loss with these additional 5g carbs. As you progress, you weight loss WILL slow, but it is controlled by YOU.

So read up on OWL chapters of DANDR, check out the stickies.

I lost 25 pounds on induction/extended induction, and I've lost 55 pounds on OWL. I wish I'd moved to OWL SOONER!
