  • Eating in the evening

My husband and I were discussing eating later at night and I was wondering if eating later at night, say ten pm and you go to bed at midnight ,is okay ?? Sometimes I just get hungry and I will have a small snack, a hard boiled egg or a slice or two of American cheese, and he said that will hurt my weight loss. I can understand it upping the scale the next morning because you ate later than normal but overall weight loss, does that hurt it ??
I was just curious about other peoples experiences with that.
    Thanks,
    Stephie

    Re: Eating in the evening

I only do it if I'm truly hungry and know I will be up for a while.....I try not to eat and then go directly to sleep but otherwise I will eat after dinner if I'm hungry! I try to make it cottage cheese with cocoa or fruit and cream.

Most people will tell you to eat when you're hungry (ever Dr. Atkins said that ).
So, if you're hungry eat. Don't look or worry about the time. I never even think about the time, and I listen to my body. I have had snacks at 11:30pm because I was hungry, and fallen asleep 5 minutes later. It hasn't affected my weight loss AT ALL.
I think it was Julie that has said the same thing.
So eat if you're hungry Stephie, and don't worry sweetie. That's what you are suppose to do...no matter the time

YEP I sure did! EAT WHEN YOU'RE HUNGRY! Your body doesn't know what time it is. Your stomach doesn't have workers who punch in to a timeclock.

If I were not allowed to eat late, I'd never get to eat dinner. If I am hungry, I eat, no matter what time it is. This also means if I'm hungry at 10am, I eat my lunch then instead of noon. I listen to my body more than I watch the clock.

Eating late has never affected me. I've lost 80 pounds so far, and I regularly eat dinner at 7 or 8pm, and I'll eat snacks at 11 or 12 or even later (If I've gone out for the evening) and it's never affected me.

I don't think it affects your weight loss, but I have always heard that eating right before bed can affect your SLEEP! The only other reason I have ever heard not to eat right before bed is that your metabolism naturally slows when you are sleeping, which makes sense, so you might not burn it up as much as if you ate during the day. Fair point, but on the other hand, if you are not making a daily habit of eating a big steak right before bed, I don't really see the difference!!!

I agree with Juli... if your hungry , why starve yourself at bedtime. A little snack may be just what I need to be able to sleep comfy, nothing heavy like you said an egg or cheese some protein to keep your tummy occupied. If I get hungry at night and don't eat it makes me start thinking of things I should not eat.

              Re: Eating in the evening

Okay, that is what I thought too, but my husband was very concerned that eating at night would hurt our chances of losing. He panics if we eat dinner late as he has to go to bed at nine to get up at 3 am to be to work an hour away at five, so eating at seven or later kind of freaks him out. I will try to get him to not worry, but I think he will.
Some nights I am not in the mood for a snack, and sometimes I want a little something. I am usually up pretty late so even a snack at ten is a couple of hours before I go to bed.
Thanks everyone, I feel a lot better now about it , and will continue to have a snack IF I am a bit hungry and need one.
