  • RE: Marathon School

    Hi everyone:

I just wanted to share my experience with my Marathon School. Yesterday, was the first day of an 8 week running school that I signed up for. It was $89 and the course is for beginning run/walkers who want to learn about the sport of run/walking.

Jacksonville Mayo Clinic and Donna Hicken Foundation are sponsoring their first Marathon in February. It is to benefit Breast Cancer. Jeff Galloway running school, whick is nationwide) is an offering to help you prepare.

Well, anyway. Yesterday, I got to the track at 6:30am and there was a minimum of 85 people there. People of all ages, 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. It was such a moving experience.

We train by ourselves running/walking and crosstraining during the week and every Sat we have a group "long run" at 7:00am.

It is soo exciting. Every week before we run there is a short meeting. For example, one week it will be on shoes, next week injuries, nutrition, exercise apparel ec.

And so, we ran our first run yesterday starting with 15 minutes. ( you go at your own pace and run walk if you need to).

Let me tell you, all 85 people got onto the track and ran/walked during a tropical storm!!! I had my poncho on and everyone did it. They didn't have to do it. They could have chosen to go home, or, they might not have come at all. The energy of whatever it takes was so strong. From so many different backgrounds, ages, sexes. It was just sooo cool.

It is like this board. Whatever it takes to establish our WOE. The way I see it is that it is not about the food or the number on a scale. It is changing ourselves to be healthy no matter what it takes. This board is sooo cool. I can feel the energy and strength each time I log In in the morning.

Sorry for the ramble. I just had what I think is going to be a life changing experience and I feel it coincides with my change to the WOL.

Cool!! I really want to get into this in the fall....it is really helpful to run with a bunch of others, isn't it? Buffy, a book I would HIGHLY recommend to you is "The NonRunners Guide to Marathon Training". It is really unique, based on a college 'marathon' course taught by a trained physiologist, for the physical portion, as well as a psychologist, for the mental portion, which is facsinating. EXCELLENT book, would be a great supplement to what you are doing. reading about the mental tips to stay strong is so interesting!!
