    Hi all,

    Kind of worried I might have kicked myself out of ketosis. Yesterday I hosted a bridal luncheon at which I drank 2 glasses of white wine. Later that evening, at the wedding, I drank FOUR beers (not light beers, either) and also a glass of champagne for the champagne toast!

    I barely ate all day because I was running around, and did not eat anything but the salad at the dinner because it was not Atkins friendly food. Could I have ruined everything? Do I need to go back to a whole 2 week Induction again?

    The good news is I was down FOUR pounds to 170 this morning, but I am sure that was the diuretic effect of the alcohol. But I am afraid to eat today! The alcohol should be all burned off by now, so my body should be burning fat again, and I thought I remembered that alcohol is the first thing your body burns. So if I didn't eat food, should my body have burned up all that alcohol with no ill effects on my ketosis or did I blow it?

    The good news is....I was surprisingly sober for having had all those drinks.

    Remember that alcohol is allowed, but not until later. You should drink extra water to make up for the diuretic of the alcohol and look forward. Your down 4 pouinds keep up the geat work.

      Your body DID burn off the alcohol first, but I'm not sure if it immediately went back into fat-burning. It depends on the carb count of those beers, as well as how many carbs you can consume and still be in ketosis.

      Best case scenario: After burning off the alcohol, your body immediately resumed fat-burning, and after drinking lots and lots of water, you get back on track and stay away from alcohol until Rung 5 of OWL.

      Worst case scenario: After burning off the alcohol, your body begins burning the carbs you consumed (if you're knocked out of ketosis). By staying on plan and drinking lots of water, you should be back in ketosis within 1-3 days.

      Both scenarios have you back on plan and doing better than ever. You don't have to go back and do a 2-week induction again. Just continue on, stay on plan, and STAY AWAY from alcohol until the appropriate rung of OWL. Remember, the alcohol isn't legal either if you're not to Rung 5.

        Well since others have posted on the effects of the alcohol/carbs...then I'll just say WOOO HOOO on the new guy!

          ha ha, thanks strudel!! i can't believe i drank that much, though. more surprisingly, i can't believe dodged getting drunk....it was all spread out over an 8 hr period, but having all those drinks with nothing but a salad and some raw veggies and dip would normally have been a disaster for me.

          i recalculated, and it turns out 3 of the 4 beers WERE light beers, and only one was full carb beer. as best i can tell, full carb beer has at max 10-12 carbs, and white wine/light beers about 3 each. champagne?? so i guesstimate i had at max 27 carbs, plus maybe TWO carb for the probably one cup of lettuce and couple of raw cucumbers ate all day. so maybe it is not as bad as i think.

          needless to say, i have only had celery and water today! tomorrow i will feel like i can safely eat again.

            laurenfra and julie, thanks. i did drink a TON of water today, and see no reason i will need to consume any alcohol the rest of the summer. i usually don't drink, and my headache this morning reinforced why....

              Way to get back on track. Weddings and get togethers are my downfall.

                  It depends on the light beer. I know Coors light has 5 carbs per bottle. The champagne has only .4 carbs per ounce. But, it's done and like the others told you--it just means that your body switches to burning the alcohol as opposed to burning fat. Good for you for getting back on track right away.

                    yes, yes....lesson learned!! thanks for the info on champagne carbs. i was so worried that i had messed everything up, thanks for making me feel better about it all! i don't lose focus and eat carbs when i drink, instead i keep tricking myself into thinking 'if i don't eat ANYTHING all there will be to burn up is the alchohol, no harm done' meanwhile forgetting that alchohol itself has carbs. thanks for all the support!

                        No kidding. It seems to only lead to bad things. I am through! Luckily I made it through and am still down a pound.
