  • Induction Questions

It's been awhile since I've been on Induction and was wondering if anyone could answer these questions:

Is it normal to get headaches (I mean bad headaches) during Induction? I seem to get these "pressure" headaches and headaches w/pain in only one spot (the spot changes throughout the day).

I am SO tired. I've been sleeping much more than usual (luckily I'm on a mini-vacation because I'm begining a new job soon). I think I remember this from my first time on Atkins, but I don't remember being this exhausted. Is there anything I can do for this?

Headache and fatigue are common symptoms of "induction flu." This "flu" happens when your body is in the process of switching from glucose-burning to fat-burning mode. Drink lots of water (dehydration is a common problem and can exacerbate symptoms) and take an OTC painkiller if the headache is bad. Get rest, take it easy, and stay on plan. Lots of people have the tendency to eat something like crackers or toast to "settle their stomachs," but really that just prolongs the symptoms and the detox process.

My induction flu hit on day 3--horrible migraine, nausea, the works. But on day 4 I woke up with more energy than I'd had in YEARS.

I second this....You are detoxing...headches and fatigue....All of it goes way once you get firmly in ketosis, at least for most of us. I had the headache for 4 days, and just sat on the couch, took Advil and planned to wait it out, then I felt great, and I had great energy for days...Cleaned closets, organized my life, even cleaned out the back end of the fridge! It's amazing what happens when you get that energy from ketosis, and then the cravings deminish and the appetite surpresses....It's heaven!

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know how long it takes to begin Ketosis? I just tested and it was negative!

                Re: Induction Questions

Hey Kristen, you might be in ketosis before you read this, but it usually takes 3 to 5 days. If you're testing with a ketostix it's best not to test first thing in the morning, many times the result will show negative or a trace. I usually test midday or after I've eaten something and have been up for a few hours and drank some water. The ketostix is not the only way to tell if you're in fact in ketosis; there are physical symptoms as well.

Take a look at the threads about ketosis, it can be helpful, or reference your book (if you have one).

                  Re: Induction Questions

Thanks. I think I'm in Ketosis now. My strip measured "small" yesterday, but I was still excited! I don't have a timer so I'm not 100% sure I'm waiting 15 seconds (as it says on the container), my counting may be a bit off but I doubt it's a huge difference.
