  • Not enough carbs question

    Hi all,

I was checking out my meal plan for the day and I'm really having a tough time getting my carbs to the correct amount. With breakfast dinner and lunch plus snacks I'm only up to 15. What do you guys do to add carbs when you've had your alotted 3 cups of veggies?
I used to have dessert w/sugar free Jello and a tbspn of heavy cream on top, but have since been told that this can cause a stall (I still lost like crazy last time, but I don't want to do anything that is not by the book this time).
I've also been wondering about the fact the in ANA book Dr. Atkins says not to count carbs for eggs (eat liberally of them). Yet, Fitday gives them a carb amount. Do you guys count them or not? I know..total newbie question way after the fact but I never used Fitday last time!! Didn't even think about it!

    Breakfast
    Mock Danish (5 net carbs)

    Snack
    Cheese string
    2 cherry tomatoes
1 piece sugarless Dentyne Gum (3.5 net carbs)

    Lunch
Sliced Chicken Breast on 1 cup of spinach w/2 cherry tomatoes (3.5)

    Snack
10 green olives (1 net carbs)

    Supper
Steak w/Frank's hot sauce, 1 cup of spinach (before cooking) w/ butter (1)

    Lots of water

    Re: Not enough carbs question

The 20 grams of carbs is the upper limit, not the requirement.

I usually go between 7 and 15 carbs per day.

The only time I add food is if I haven't gotten in enough calories - I do not want to go into starvation mode! That will guarantee me a stall.

Since I use fitday, I also count the egg carbs, but I don't sweat it!

So keep up what you are doing, don't worry about too few carbs. You'll have plenty of opportunity to add carbs later.
    Start date: 7/29/2007

    Scale: SW:235 CW:193
    GW:150

Tape Measure: I've lost 42.5 inches as of 3/15/2008

    Mini goals:
    215 - met 9/10/07
    205 - met 10/17/07
    195 - met 2/20/08
    180

    I survived a two-month stall!

      Hi, Pink

I just wanted to ask... what do you mean by the "ANA book"? The reason I ask is because the books put out after Dr. A's death are pretty much worthless. This board goes by the 2002 version of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution. The carb counter in the back of that book does list eggs as having something like .6 carbs per egg, so I round up. I have read the newer book put out by the Atkins Corporation entitled "The Atkins Essentials ~ A Two Program to Jump-Start Your Low Carb Lifestyle" that describes how to do induction and it is full of misinformation... they are clearly in the business to sell products rather than follow the premise for weight loss outlined by Dr. A himself.

I custom enter most of my foods on Fitday... even eggs, which I count as 1 carb each. I sat down with my laptop in the kitchen and entered info from the label of every food that I eat and adjusted some of them to reflect a carb even when the label says 0. (eggs and cheese) Also, make sure that you set a fiber goal in Fitday so that it will count the fiber for you. If you haven't done so yet, just go into "Goals" on the left side of the screen and set a fiber goal... it doesn't matter which number you set it at. Mine is set at one just so it will count the fiber for me. You subtract the fiber from the total carbs to get net carbs and that is the number you go by.

About getting your carbs up - with practice you will learn which veggies pack the most fiber and nutrition punch. When available, I try to eat a cup of jicama daily... it's considered a salad veggie, so it counts toward that requirement and has good fiber and carb count. Also, I eat red, yellow, or green pepper strips daily... another "salad" veggie that has great nurtition, fiber, and carbs... I eat them raw and they are good! I rarely eat lettuce any more unless I have gotten in other nutritious veggie carbs first. I would also move onto OWL as soon as your 2 week Induction is completed. Rung 1 is more veggies... yay! I stayed on the veggie rung for almost 2 months so I could try as many veggies as possible and on the weeks I didn't add a new food, I starting upping my carbs with veggies to start the process of finding my CCLL.

Good luck, and please feel free to post any more questions that you may have.

        Re: Not enough carbs question

You're so smart Mitzi. Thanks so much. I actually had the Atkin's Essentials book when I started out last time. I have since purchased the older version with the counter. I will definitely go by it from now on!

My other question is about mayonnaise. I live in Canada and have been to literally every store in town. I cannot find a mayonnaise without sugar. The Nutritional Info shows 0g sugar and the ingredients list includes sugar. Any recommendations??

Hope you have a fabulous day!

          Re: Not enough carbs question

          You are very welcome, Pink.

Here is a link to an awesome list of foods, their counts, weights, and what rung they are in:
          http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...104#post640104

After you click on the above link, you will then need to click on NUTRITIONAL SPREADSHEET. I have printed out this list and use it all of the time.

Another thing that has made my life so much easier is investing in a small, inexpensive food scale. I think mine cost about $4.00 and measures in ounces and grams. I used to stress over exactly how much of a vegetable would constitute a cup when they are irregular in shape. This wonderful spreadsheet includes the weights of the foods so that I can easily figure out how much a cup of something is. It's great for measuring out an ounce of nuts. I can't believe I didn't get one early on.

About mayo - I don't eat much mayo, except for when I make broccoli slaw. When I do use it, I have been using Hellman's and it is exactly like you have described - says 0 carbs on the label but has sugar in the ingredients. I have heard that Duke's mayo is good, but I have never seen it where I live. I think I may try to make my own at some point... from what I have seen from others on the board, it looks easy to do. I will try to find the last recipe I saw and post it here.

          See ya!

            Me, again

Here is an excerpt from a post made by Julie:

"I decided to try making my own mayonnaise. It's very tasty, but I was surprised at how yellow it is. But then again, the recipe I modified only uses egg yolks, not the whole egg.

            Here's my recipe:

            INGREDIENTS
            2 egg yolks
            1 cup of oil
            1 tsp lemon juice
            1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar
            1 tsp salt
1 drop sweetzfree (I have liquid Splenda that I would use)
            1 tsp dry mustard
            1/2 tsp paprika

Beat egg yolks until frothy. Add oil as slow as humanly possible. After all oil is added, add lemon juice, vinegar, sweetzfree (optional) and dry ingredients. Beat egg mixture for an eternity, until it starts to thicken. Increase speed on mixer, continue to beat until peaks form and mayo reaches desired consistency."

There are probably other recipes on the board that could be searched out, as well.

            See 'ya!

              Re: Not enough carbs question

              Hi Pink

I'm from Canada too and I don't think we can buy sugarfree mayo here. The Dukes brand isn't available thats for sure.

I was using Hellmans too then I went to making my own, but when I don't have time I still use Hellmans. I guess the amount of sugar in it isn't going to make too much difference as since its listed as 0g that means there is only a trace amount in the serving size.

Welcome...don't think I've seen you around here before...a fellow Canuck!

                Hi Sweet!

I think I'm going to do the same as you. It's pretty difficult to find time to make things that aren't quick. Planning a wedding, gym, working, social life, family...you know how it goes!

I've been around for a little while, but was out of town for a bit. Thanks for the warm welcome! It's nice to know that there is someone else from Canada, makes it easier to figure out what products we can find! How long have you been a member for?

Great tips. Thanks Mitzi. When you mentioned setting a fiber goal, I'm assuming that you mean in order to subtract the total dietary fiber from the carbs. I've set the goal. Do you just find the total fiber and subtract it from the carbs yourself to find the net carbs? Or am I missing a step?
I think I'm going to give the homemade mayo a shot. I think just for the sake of my conscience!!

How are things going for you? On OWL did you find that your loss slowed very much to begin with? I'm at a bit of an impasse there as I'm hoping to lose some weight before my wedding (6 mo away). But I want to do it healthfully as well.

                  Pink,

You may want to read through this thread from our Veggie Challenge. It was SO instructive! There's a lot of good information and ideas in here! I still apply a lot of what I learned from this...

Hey pink, have you thought of doubling up on the mock danish, that would add carbs...and I get some presliced pepperoni to add to the cheese for a snack...I also buy deli ham and make cream cheese and ham roll ups...that would add carbs.
                    I use hellman's mayo too....often.
People will tell you to get the carbs up, it really helps....

                      Re: Not enough carbs question

tmn - Thanks..thats a great idea. Do you happen to have an example menu that includes 12-15 carbs of vegetables? I'm wondering what types to eat considering on a typical day I'm getting my full 3 cups but only come out to about 6 carbs per day.

Jess - mmm rollups lol...end of the workday and I'm getting hungry just thinking about them! The pepperoni is a good plan too...is there a specific brand/type that you buy? I'm always iffy about this because ingredients at the deli are not always easy to find or trust. I'm so glad to hear that other use that mayo...I think I was having a bit of anxiety over the whole thing. Congrats again on your amazing loss. You look so fit and confident. Good for you!!

Did you ever happen to post re: your workout regime? Just curious cuz you look all hardbody....I would love some tips!
