  • My acupuncturist doesn't like low carb

I should learn after doing Atkins THIS LONG to just keep my mouth shut.

I thought my acupuncturist might be a little more open to low carb then my doctor...but he started telling me about ketoacidosis and "starving" your body and how you "need" carbs and how my blood sugar issues are all mental (like eating a bowl of cereal in the morning and feeling my blood sugar spike is all in my head!) and all that....arg!!!! Oh well, I won't be talking to him about that anymore.

The acupuncture itself was great though.

Ugh. I love how people who have no issues with food can tell you what you experience on Atkins is all in your head.

Just goes to show you--all the education in the world and still doctors can be idiotic.

      What a dweeb.

If you're going to be against something, you should, at the very least, educate yourself about it. Otherwise, you start doing things like confusing ketosis with ketoacidosis and yammering that blood sugar is all in the mind.

Wow. Ignorance... unbelievable. So many people are so ill informed. That's really sad when you think about it... Maybe Diabetes is "all in your head" too... and heart disease, and stroke... mind over matter...
Sorry you went through that but glad the acupuncture was good.

You should tell him where to shove his needle! Yah, I had an endocrinologist (for thyroid) doctor tell me I should try losing weight on an 800 calorie a day diet. Uhhh.....thanks, but I'll go back to Atkins and enjoy eating more than 2 carrots and a raisin.

OMG..."health professionals" can be so crazy. It's like they spit out whatever.

I was sorta thinking that too - like if I had diabetes and was on low-carb, what would he say to that? Or how about the fact that if I do go back to high-carb, I will most likely BECOME diabetic?

I kept saying that I felt so good eating the way I do and that's when he started saying, "It must be 'mental'." Whatever!

I just thought he might be alternative enough to at least be open to it. Otherwise, I would have never brought it up. He really was so uneducated about it.

I liked the acupuncture and he is very good at fertility acupuncture so I hope this difference in "opinion" does affect that.

I love that...it must be "mental". Yeah, I was trying to ask this dr. if a 'calorie is just a calorie' (as he claimed) then how is it I can eat well over 800 calories on Atkins and lose MORE weight than if I were just restricting calories?!

And personally, 'mental' or 'placebo'-- like I care! If it's working, hand it over to me!

Re: My acupuncturist doesn't like low carb

I have so learned not ot even mention the words Atkins or Low Carb when people ask what I am doing I say "watching what I eat very carefully and excercising as well" it's the truth with out going into details of how I am doing it ........ I always get a "good for you" or "thats the way to do it" and I just smile and agree. I used to get so bothered by the fact that I couldn't just proudly say Atkins, with uot getting a bunch of greif for it but now I am just happy to not get into the whole debate over whats best for me.

Anyways I'm sorry you had that experience but glad your visit was good otherwise. Just let him see first hand the changes in your bosy and lifestyle and he will see how good it is for you to do what your doing!

Re: My acupuncturist doesn't like low carb

I def didn't mention Atkins. I love how you can say "South Beach" and eveyone claps but say "Atkins" and get the "you're going to have a heart attack" speech. Even our family doc recommended South Beach to my DH but I would still NEVER tell them I do Atkins.

I like the "I watch what I eat very carefully" answer. In one respect I am lucky - I have never doubted that Atkins is healthy. So whatever people tell me just rolls off my back and I never worry.

But I do wish I hadn't even said "low carb" to my acupuncturist (and I never even say THAT to people so I am kicking myself for mentioning it). I put on my intake form "low sugar, mostly whole foods, made from scratch, no processed foods, lots of veggies and protein" and thought he would be so impressed.

Re: My acupuncturist doesn't like low carb

"Health professionals" usually have a God-complex. Most of us were raised to take what doctors say as law...until we realized that in that space of time where they "step out" and reappear 5 minutes later with a "diagnosis" was really when they were looking up your symptoms in their medical book from college because they didn't even know what was wrong. Sometimes, they need to be reminded that until they create someone, (not procreate), they aren't the end all be all on the human body and the way it works.

LOL! That is SO TRUE!! When I told my guy that I had gone back to Atkins he said, 'oh, that's so drastic, why not try South Beach?'

I also agree with Gottalose that some of these drs have God-complexes. I used to take everything at face value, but the older I get, the more I realize that the only person who's going to get to the bottom of my health issues is ME.
