  • Wanting to start today..for the 100th time this year

    Hi everyone,

    Well, I want to start doing the atkins diet today and I am starting off discouraged..here's why;

About 9 years ago, A friend told me about atkins. at the time I was approx 270 (I'm 6'3 tall), I got down to 185lbs (at my lowest) within 7 months. 200 is about where I think I should be.
Flash forward to the present: I am 328 lbs, feeling miserable, look like crap, and now have high blood pressure and cholesterol issues.
I NEED to change my life.
Atkins worked. I have since started and stopped a number of times over the years.Sometimes I made it 3 weeks, but mostly, they were 1-2 day attempts before falling off.

I KNOW this way of eating works..so why do I struggle to stay on it? I crave breads, I get super burnt on the food choices real fast.

Why was it so easy the first time and beyond hard the times thereafter?

Do I make sense here to anyone?

I'm gonna give it a shot, I hope this time tomorrow I have made it one day.

Could use encouragement, especially from men around my age (37) who have had success beyond the first time around.

Welcome P1970. You are making perfect sense. I have gone thru the same thing, but this time I made up my mind to change my life and not my weight. I come here everyday for support and inspiration. They have so much to offer. I found this site on here www.genaw.com/lowcarb/index.html. Which is Linda's Lowcarb Recipes. The atkins induction friendly recipes have an * by them. The variety certainly helps me. I'm not a 37 year old man, but I am someone who was doing good, then crept back up. Hope you make it through, and come back to visit us often. Good Luck

There aren't many men around the STAC I think but I'm a 32 yr old woman who knows where you are coming from.

It's not your fault you feel the way you do when trying to recommit. It's your addiction to the flour and sugar which sabotages your attempts. I'm guessing the pull is too strong for you to resist.

It's important to reread DANDR and wrap your mind around what needs to be done. It's a great motivational tool and should remind you of why you need to fully focus and get back to this WOE. It's only painful for the first two weeks if you pull off a clean induction-(if not you'll prolong the craving issues and could kill your recommit)-the rest is a piece of sugar free, low carb cake!!

        thanks for the words everyone!!

it's 7:15 and I have made it so far..stayed quite busy today (btw- i work out of my home..which lends itself to snacking mindlessly.)

I am guessing though I may have had approx 30 carbs, I plan to stay around 20 but I allow myself to hit 30 without trouble.

I feel the carb monster wanting to know "what's the heck has happened" felt a bit shaky tonight...but I've got more determination today than fear of failure.

        tomorrow..day 2..if i make it to day 3 i think i'm "in"

Welcome to the board! Yes I do what you're going through, been there done that and I've got a few T-shirts too! LOL. On a serious note, the addictions are hard to get past, but once you get past that it's not so bad. Drink lots of water, start moving some and getting exercise.
Mandilyn had a great suggestion, Linda's website totally makes this WOE not boring at all. Her website is amazing, tons of different ideas and things to make that are easy and quick!!!
            Good luck to you!

I would suggest you get the bad snacks out of the house and replace them with things like celery/cheese/sf jello/pork rinds.......... it makes it easier for me when there isn't junk around.

3rd day in..and i'm making it rather well!!

It helps that I've been super busy...

buffalo wings with a small amount of ranch has been my main food choice.

Pepperoni and mozzerrella has been my snack

watching my carbs..not overdoing the wings, they can creep up if I don't.

Dealt with "atkins flu" already...BUT, i have a shirt that I tried on a couple days ago that fit a bit better this morning so I know it's working....refuse to weigh myself..don't wanna be discourged.

                    thanks for the support y'all!

Good going, Phatty!!!! Welcome to day three! And good for you on staying with the bulletin board. I can not even begin to tell you how much it motivates me to come here and post. Not only just reading other's posts, but just checking in. Kinda makes me feel "obligated".

Great to get the "flu" over with. Roughest part of this diet in my opinion. And I absolutely completely agree Speedyturtle. Get those bad snacks out of the house and NOW! Do not keep anything in the house that is a failure inducer for you. Keep plenty of Atkins friendly foods instead. And I don't understand why you would get burnt out on the food choices. There's tons of them! Once I get past my carb cravings and enjoying the bounty of foods I AM "allowed" I keep thinking "what diet?" DO check out the recipies that have been suggested. You'll find a plethora of great choices that will take the hum drum boredom right out of your menu!

And you need to catch up with BigRunner, a male STACer, who may be just what you need to create that "male bonding/Atkins partner" that you seek, since we women seem to have an overabundance of gender specific 'bonding' partners.

And THROW AWAY the scales. At least for now. I'm still so angry with my scales because they have been hovering in a five pound range for weeks now. But my clothes fit better, and I'm so much more full of energy. Scales are my ENEMY! They make me think this woe is not working, while my clothes say "WOW MOMMA!!! You've lost some serious BULK!"

Keep coming back. And don't you ever give up!
                      Drink more water!

really happy to report no hunger and no cheating!!! no desire to cheat..i did have a textural craving that an atkins safe jello snack took care of today.
you guys have that "hot breath" thing going on? I call it meat breath..I never hear anyone talk about it so maybe it's just me..feels like my breath is just too hot. the jello took care of it.

will not weigh for a good while..right now i "feel" like i've lost 8 or so lbs...which probobly means 1

normally, i would have been at a chinese buffet or something tonight...but opted for topless burgers..bottomless too.

thanks for support..I really think i can do this! But i know I am one meal away from blowing it at all times.

                          have a great weekend everyone!

Well I am a women around your age (38 and it is hard.. But I think we have to take one day at a time..and when we get discouraged and want that Chocolate pie or that homemade bread we think about how bad it makes our body feel. I know coming here to ADBB helps me alot to. The success stories make me want to go on.. You can do it!
