  • Dr. Atkins says...

    Good morning,

Most of you know that I have needed encouragement the past couple of days. I am not seeing the weight loss that I feel like I deserve (ha) after six days of induction. Only one pound actually.

So, I turned to you and I also turned to Dr. Atkins. On page 215, he discusses uses and abuses of induction. My problem is that I have spent the past three years yo- yo dieting. I have mentioned before that I reached goal in 2002 and have since been yo-yo ing! The last six months, I have been "low calorie" eating which caused a weight gain of about twenty more pounds.

He states, "Induction not only jump starts your weight loss, it is also a convenient refuge to which you can retreat whenever you need to get off a weight loss plateau or to get back on the program after a lapse."

He goes on to say, "However, induction can be abused and that abuse can ultimately threaten your ability to maintain a healthy weight"

Page 216, he says, "Another more serious concern I have is the impact this back and forthing can have on your metabolism. It is likely that your metabolism will adapt at a certain point - in a sense, developing a tolerance. People who repeatedly regain weight and go back to induction sometimes find that they do not experience the dramatic and easy weight loss they initially enjoyed."

And, "If you keep retreating to induction from Lifetime Maintenance, it becomes a form of yo-yo dieting. I'm not saying you shouldn't go back to induction when you need it. I'm simply saying don't do it regularly, in the belief that it will always work the same way for you. You may be in for a nasty surprise."

I think that this is happening to me. After so long of yo-yo dieting and re-re-re-re starting induction, it is HARD! That just means that I have to work harder.

    So, be careful folks.

Thanks Shannon for posting. I know each time I re-read the book, it seems Dr. A is speaking directly to me. He understood people in a way that he took the time to address any problems we run in to.

YO YO is a NO NO for me and you've pointed out why we should all try to avoid it and make this a permanent life-style change.

Thanks for the refresher course! I knew that it was harder each time you re-re-re started, but I didn't remember Dr. Atkins words, exact or otherwise. Yes, he does seem to talk directly to each and every one of us. I'm definately one of those that believe he knew what he was talking about.

And I find myself so much less concerned about rapid weight loss this time around. It's as if I've FINALLY gotten to the point (through my head) that it's not how fast you loose, it's that you loose. And the more exercise you add in (at first) the slower the weight loss BECAUSE a baseball size amount of muscle weighs significantly more than the same size amount of fat. You may not loose POUNDS...but look for those INCHES! Focus less on the weight loss and more on the health gain. You ARE getting healthier, and once you focus on that, the weight loss will take care of itself.
        Drink more water!

Great reminders, but it also needs to be said that induction is a 14 day process- not a 6 day one. Judge your results at the end of 14 days and don't sweat it in the meantime!

Oh and just to add to that...measure yourself. I used to not bother but I see sometimes I will lose inches and not pounds...so if you haven't yet...get a tape measure and measure those body parts!

This is a great thread. I'm sure most people realize that when they yo yo they usually end up heavier than they began. This is exactly why.

I love posts about DANDR! I always love to discuss these types of points.
