  • Tricks or Treats???

Well this is my first Halloween with this WOE and I am a little nervous about all the soon to be candy in the house. I am going to try and not buy any, but my 6 year old son loves to come home from trick or treating and pass out candy. So I was hoping I could get some info on what everyone else does. Do you have any tricks you use to keep yourself on the straight and narrow? Or do you allow yourself a halloween treat? I could really use some help especially because Thanksgiving and Christmas follow Halloween quiet closely.

    Re: Tricks or Treats???

Go ahead and let him pass it out to you, but don't eat it. Hide it in your hands or chair or ?? and say you ate it.

I have a hard time with candy, not chocolate, but candy corn, that type of stuff so I know where you are coming from!

I totally have to be prepared during times like this. I also make sure I get induction friendly (or whatever rung you are on) dessert items and have them available. This way you won't feel left out, so to speak.

Have you ever made the beachgirl's cheesecake? The pumpkin is so good and you'll never know you aren't missing anything!

Do I allow myself treats? Not at this time - probably the reason I'm re-starting... I get too carried away. So, for now, I have to get back to it and train myself, brain, body to only crave what is good for me.. LOL

This is going to be very hard on me too with the upcoming holidays, expecially halloween with candy EVERYWHERE... I am going to have to start making some of the deserts I have heard about and that are induction friendly. I will have to check out which treats I can make. Christmas Eve will also be a great challenge as my grandma has made the same buffet of treats for as long as I can remember. Any kind of treat, desert, cookie you can imagine!! I just have to constantly remind myself that those items are off limits for me now. Those items are the reason I am where I am today. But I know the next couple months will be difficult on me.

        Re: Tricks or Treats???

Its a mind thing. I have 4 kids all under 12. Halloween is BIG at our house. We get lots of trick or treaters so I need to have plenty of candy. But its not just Halloween, its everyday. With 5 people in my family not doing Atkins it can be a challenge at times. Its hard to be the 'odd man out', so to speak. I have gotten to a place that I want to do this, that I need to do this and that my brain just shuts out the other stuff.

Lucky - that really struck a cord with me, the mindset. You are right, we have to be willing to do what it takes to make ourselves healthier and better people. I know I was there for quite awhile the first time I did this, I know it can happen again!

Prepare - candy - we've tasted it before, we do not have to taste it again...
          Make items we can have!
Heck - think about it - do we really need anything at all? (candy, goodies etc that is..)
The holidays are more than just food, think of things you'd like to do with your family during the upcoming holidays, that will be your treat.

For everyone who is thinking they are going to have problems, start to think of why you won't have problems! I know you can! (and I'm going to join you in those thoughts as well!)

            Re: Tricks or Treats???

The first thing I do is to ONLY buy candy that I don't like. That's key. If you get stuff you like, you'll be tempted from the get-go.

Then I feed myself an early dinner of stuff that's high in fat.

And I have some legal treats (homemade candy) to nosh on when I feel like it.

Apart from that, I've been known to disappear into the back of the house and let others hand out candy if I start to feel deprived. Nothing like a warm bubblebath and music and candles to make me feel just fine.

              Re: Tricks or Treats???

I've had a bag of candy for the last month in the pantry... I forgot it was there... My son eats a little from time to time. I just don't think about it as an option. I know it's not my friend and don't want to blow my success! present or future! Try hard to put it out of your mind. Just shut the door on the possibility of eating it at all! Surround yourself with lots of good options.
