  • Personal Question (that probably includes TMI)

I'm restarting Atkins after being off for quite some time and have some questions.

Originally, I went off Atkins in May 2006. I was 5 months pregnant and had gestational diabetes. My doctor wanted me to make the move from Atkins to South Beach. I was ok with that. After my son was born in early Dec 2006, I opted to breast feed..therefore putting off Atkins once again. When Ezekiel (my son) was 5 months old, I found out that I was pregnant again. I continued on South Beach, although I was not always as committed as I should be. I was committed to forgoing the sweets because of gestational diabetes though.

Last month I lost my baby. Since I was so far along in the pregnancy, I had to have him vaginally and my body when through all of the "having a baby" stuff (my milk came in, etc etc).

I am still bleeding from this and I'm wondering if this could be effecting my results with Atkins. My first two weeks on Atkins I lost 12 lbs. I opted to do an extended Induction as I have a difficult time getting into ketosis and because I wanted to be really strict during Thanksgiving. So, I'm now on Day 19 and I have gained 4 lbs back (although the Ketosis strip still reads Trace - down two levels from just two days ago). Could a combination of hormones, stress, bleeding and the "after effects" of my pregnancy be causing havoc with my body and therefore with Atkins?

Thanks for any insight into this - and it is good to be back

Yep. Your hormones are all whacky. This would be true if you had a live birth as well. Your body struggles for at least 9-10 weeks to just get back to a semblence of stability, hormone-wise.

The weight gain you are experiencing is NOT fat gain, not if you are eating properly. It's just a symptom of the hormone issue. Sort of like TOM, when you bloat and then release. It may happen several times during the course of the next couple of months. The "trace" issue on the ketostix is nothing. You are either in ketosis, or not. The "level" of ketosis reflects only the hydration factor - the more fluid you drink, the lighter the color will be.

I have had 6 miscarriages. Never on Atkins, but I can assure you that the fluxuation in hormones and the body's handling of the inevitable internal bruising that comes with delivery does some weird stuff in your body.

You just keep doing what you're doing, get gentle exercise until dr. says you can go for it, and HEAL. Emotionally and physically. Speaking of which, how are you holding up, heart-wise?

Pm me if you need me.

My heart goes out to you....

As far as the diet goes, just worry about going through the motions of it - not really the scale right now. Let your body get used to the way of eating and your body is so out of whack from baby stuff, it takes awhile to get back to normal.

Take your time, take care of yourself and your body will get back to "normal" one day

Thank you for the quick replies! It is good to know that my body is acting normal within the abnormalities. I'll just keep trucking along. Even when not losing weight, I still feel so much better on Atkins - just "un-gunked".

Emotionally I just take one day at a time. Some days are definitely more difficult than others (the old adage of time fixes everything doesn't always apply - especially when you are counting the weeks of how pregnant you SHOULD be). I'm blessed with my son Ezekiel though - he helps get me through the days.

Thank you for the answers and for the concern.. I truly appreciate it.

Shanna I wanted to just send you out a big big hug and tell you I will hold you in my thoughts and prayers. I lost a baby at 22 weeks along and I understand abouthaving to labor and deliver it is just nothing anyone should have to go through and I'm so sorry you did.

As far as the Atkins WOL goes for now I would just follow it as that, a WOL, don't worry about the scale or anything else for that matter, just get through this time and allow your body, mind and spirit to heal ........ if you are stressing and having hormonal changes all at the same time along with the physical changes your body is adjusting too your weight is going to be all over the place, because of fluid retention milk supply changes ect....... stay off the scale eat when your hungry and try very hard not to make food your solace ......... Hang on tight to family and friends for your support and on very difficult days or moments pray and ask God to see you through. You will, one day at a time, return to normal again and things will start to be less stressful and then and only then should you begin to focus on the weight loss .........
          Big Big Hugs to you

Reading your post hurt my heart. I am so terribly sorry for the loss you and your family suffered. Please let me know if you ever need to talk.

Hon, with all you've been through in the past month, it would be unusually for your body not to be wonky. Just continue to take good care of yourself and your body will begin to heal, even if your heart can't.

                  God bless you.

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. My husband and I lost a daughter at 26 weeks, and you are right, time doesn't heal everything, but it will get a little easier. Tomorrow will be 9 years, and sometimes it seems like it was yesterday. We have three children besides her, and I still miss her just the same. My heart goes out to you. If you need a shoulder, I'm here.

Just wanted to offer my condolences as well. Losing a baby is very difficult on top of all the hormonal and physical changes you are going through. I am so sorry for all you are going through... those 4lb are just a normal fluctuation and could be from a number of causes. Continue taking good care of yourself and take it easy. You've been through a lot and you need time to heal

Shana, my heart goes out to you. I know from experience what you are going through right now. In 1995 I lost 3 children in one year (a little girl @ 20 weeks due to toxemia and a set of twins @ 22 weeks due to incompetent cervix). I labored and delivered them all. It was devastating and the only reason my husband at the time and I made it through was by the grace of God. He kept us sane and we made it. You will make it dearheart but my advice to you would be to let your body, mind, emotions HEAL. Then you can focus on losing weight. I pray that God keeps you and gives you and your family strength and peace.
