I am a scale fanatic, but board wisdom says to only weigh once a week, and for real measurement, use tape measures. Much more reliable for progress.

The scale that I have breaks down weight into fat, water and muscle. It helps me not freak when I gain 2 pounds of water overnight. Perhaps that might work better for you if you can't give it up altogether.

I weigh myself every morning and track it daily on fitday. If I don't do it everyday I don't stay motivated. I just love seeing the chart go down. It also helps me figure out if I have a sudden gain what might be causing me to retain water. I think it's all about what works best for each individual.

I am a scale addict. I weight myself before bed and then when I wake up. It helps me somewhat I think to see the higher weight in the evening and then woosh wake up to 2 lbs gone at least - LOL.

I like the idea of the scale with the water weight on it! Who makes that one?

Hey Sweets, you know there are those who do weight everyday, they use that as a tool and there are those who go crazy and all but quit! I don't use the scale, it messes too much with the head. Many of my friends do....

I think you need to expect alot of fluctuations and for many causes...Did you know when you over-exercise to heal your muscle tissue, the muscles will actually hold in water and cause you to retain it...
Did you know some foods and minerals will cause you to retain.
Did you know your cycle can cause you to retain...
Some foods cause you to release water,
Did you know you will not be like any one else, and if you do weigh every day, soon you will understand the ebb and flow of your body....
There are those who are pro-scale and there are those who are anti-scale....
Which way will help you be here next month?
Which way will help you get to your goal with weight?
Which way will help you enjoy the process of weightloss and health?
GO THAT WAY, THE WAY THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU!

Thanks Jess!!! Your words helped!!! I am just frustrated this time around for some reason... last time I did induction it seemed easier and the weight fell off... this time it has been 9 days in and I don't really see the difference!!! Maybe I am expecting too much or looking too soon... I do admit I feel better and not as "bloated" or as "heavy" so I know it's working... I just have to keep at it!!!

Re: I think I need to get rid of my scale!!!

Sweets, you are only 9 days in and have lost almost 10% of the weight you want to lose - that's GOOD!!! On average you can expect to lose 5-10% of the amount you want to lose during induction - you are already at the top end of that with 5 days to go!

I weigh every day, but am completely unconcerned about, in fact expect, gains of 1-2 pounds or more from time to time. It's just how it goes. I don't obsess about it, just hop on, hop off and get on with it, whatever the number.

However I only record the weight when it is a new low. After losing a few pounds, I invariably gain one or two back for a little while, then lose them again this time permanently. I don't record these transient gains, because I know if I stick to plan they will go in their own good time, it's just my body adjusting and dealing with life. As long as new lows keep turning up eventually - and they do - then all is fine.

I'm the same way as kate, I can fluctuate 3 pounds in a day. Having been scale obsessed, I have learned to go more by what my body and clothes are telling me than what the scale says. It's a difficult one to overcome.

It's true - jeans tell more - like this morning put on a pair that I was expecting to use for my love handles challenge and they don't give me the handles anymore!!

Yet - my weight was up a pound which is no big deal in my mind cause the jeans fit - LOL

The best thing I like about the scale is I can cut out certain items a lot quicker by knowing what I ate the day before and then seeing a gain/flucutation if it's huge - I know something from yesterday didn't do well with my body. Like summer sausage (and we make our own so I know the actual ingredients) - if I eat more than 1 piece I will show a 2+lb gain everytime... yes water weight but it's frustrating every time so I stop eating it until I am at a more comfortable weight.

You guys are great!!! Thanks for the "wisdom" I feel better now about the "scale". My clothes are looser and I feel great.. so in the end does it really matter what the scale says...... no!!! I am going to try to stay off for a couple of days..... I for one, can't handle a 1-2lbs gain from the day before.. it's discouraging to me.. I will take my cue from how I feel.. and hopefully can stick to the scale once a week!!!

there are no scales in my house, because my entire self worth can be affected by a random weigh in, i go to my doctor's office once a month to weigh in, i don't even have a n appointment, i just call up and say, hey can i come in and weigh in and they are like of course and are happy to see me. I could never stay off the scale if I had one in my house. (Remember to take measurements)

Thanks Jimmy.... but I am soooo afraid to take measurements!! I have basically been on a weightloss/exercise wol for 2 years now.... but I have fallen off the wagon the last 6 months or so.. I am terrified to see what my measurements would be and then I would be totally discouraged!!!!!

Using the tape measure is the way to go. I don't own a scale either & I won't own one. I find them to be very discouraging. Measurements tell the truth. For me the loss of inches has been a huge help in keeping me going. Also numbers don't tell the whole story. How are you feeling, how do your clothes fit, are you sleeping better at night, how are your moods, your attitude...are you happy??? These things are more important than the number on the scale.

                            Just my opinion!

okay , afraid of the tape measure, i understand, then you do have a tight dress in the closet, try it today and try it in 2 weeks, compare and contrast how it fits over a two week period. In march of 2007, i was wearing 52 size pants, now I bought 44s, so there is away to get around a tape measure.
