  • The Book!

I've had an eye opening experience. A good friend here at ADBB pointed out something to me yesterday in a PM, the "dangers of induction" when abused. This person wasn't trying to offended me, but they had just read the whole book again (in a challenge) and spotted something about constantly going back to induction. In light of the Induction BUZZ going on over here, as a Moderator, it's my job to be on top of what the book says and to promote the right way of things. Promote and support YOU as you try to follow the book.
Well, I didn't know the right way in that moment. I was short on knowledge.
I was just doing my own thing! Truth be told.

For a moment I felt "caught"(AND AM I GLAD I WAS)...but then I just re-read what was said, and I asked for page numbers. You know when I feel a need to tighten up, I go back to the chapter on induction, and I I go back to the first 11 chapters. I never move to pre-Maint. or Maint. chapters....
My friend, was being a good friend, just encouraging me in light of my role as a moderator. It opened a wonderful door of understanding that I want to share with you.

My friend led me to pages 215-216 USES AND ABUSES OF INDUCTION. Something we need to really consider here. How many times have you gone back to induction, and are you ready now to move to rung one? Do you want to really mess up your metabolism? I don't.

Even more eye-opening to me was pg 223-224
THE WRONG WAY TO DO ATKINS. I've seen so many people do these things, and I've determined I don't want to do this.

I was awake in the very early morning here today, thinking about me and my food issues. Thinking about what I read yesterday and where I am. I've cut out everything and am down in a rung 3 position. I've dropped some weight but most importantly I am feeling back in control. Yet I know all too well that I really lack knowledge for the level I am at. (Instead of dealing more with new knowelege I run back to to same old, same old) This was my 5a.m. revelation. I really am on the short end of the knowledge stick. I go back to the beginning of the book instead of really embrace as so many of my friends have the last 2 phases of the book. As a moderator I owe it to all of you to be "more up on my stuff". To help moderate and keep us to what the book says. This entire site is about following Atkins book the 2002 edition and seeing the transforming lifestyles tranforming our lives! My job is to promote this.

Then I read the thing that may change everything for me.....
YOUR METABOLIC TENDENCIES ARE NEVER CURED! I've seen this in my body and my daughters. If I do not follow the phase I am on, I gain weight.

There are dangers if we tinker too often or too much. I don't want to mess my body up, I want to learn and grow up! I've said it before and I'll always say it, I want to be here and thriving. I am thrilled at all Atkins has given me, but I need to grow more in my knowledge and not just play a game with it. I have metabolic issues, and when I do things the way this diet prescribes I loose weight and feel great. Now I need to do the next phases this diet prescribes and grow stronger at new habits.
    As Dr A says:
"The Fat You sent to Kingdom come is a SYMPTOM OF CHRONIC METABOLIC CONDITION. The Blood sugar imbalance will not go away permanently because you have taken a nutritional path to circumvent it. All you have to do is go back to eating the way you once did, or even partially so and you will arouse the sleeping demon."
2008 is going to be about the book again for me. My eyes are open to my ways at a deeper level and I want to grow at this point forward. I want to keep what I have instead of see it all slip away. I know I have a metabolic issue that must be addressed on a daily basis. Robert Atkins, M.D. found a way for me to make it and he helped millions who sought to change a big problem, more so than just loose weight. My BODY HAS THAT METABOLIC PROBLEM.

      Re: The Book!

Very good point this morning. I'm always surprised when people say, "oh once you go back to *normal* eating after being *on* Atkins, all your weight will come back".

well, duh. Its true, if I go back to eating junk I certainly will awaken that metabolic demon....Atkins IS normal eating for me when I face the truth.

        Hey Jess,

I just wanted to say thanks for posting this message. I needed to hear it. I lack so much knowledge on the proper way to do Atkins. I mean, yes, I have the book and I've read it, but like you, I keep going back to what I know, to what is comfortable. I'm going to reread my book, paying careful attention to the pages you pointed out. Thanks for putting it out there.

Thanks Jess. I was just reading the same thing and was trying to decide if I was abusing induction- but I hadn't been able to make a clean week......

I just want to get the control back and then I am going right back to where I was. I have given my self 5 more days of induction (with the added vegi carbs of rung 1).

                Great Post btw.

Thanks Jess - honestly it changed my mind about doing a full blown induction. No sense screwing up what is working (husband took measurements and pics today).

I'm just backing off a little on a few different things and then I will go from there

I re-read the part while I was making lunch......

I just recently finished the read the book challenge and we had discussed the bouncing back and forth on induction issue. SO I thought about it before I decided to go back on ............ I hope I'm not making a mistake but really felt the need to refocus and shock my body back into ketosis ........ I will do more searching and reading before I decided to stay on any longer. Thanks for recalling to our minds this much needed info Jess. Your always so right on with your information and motivation! Thanks!

                            Re: The Book!

Wow some of us have been on the same wave length as far as going back and reading DANDR. I did this last week also. I have never had a clean induction so I kept going back to the beginning and starting all over again several times. In my head I know that this can't be good and if I want this to work I am going to have to follow the book to the letter so that is why I went back and read it over again over the course of three nights.

I am in my third day of induction and feeling pretty good. Every day I have to get up now and really think about what I am doing and what I want to achieve. I can't do "mindless dieting" anymore. I have to make a concerted effort to make this work.

Thanks for your post Jess and for your dedication as a moderator for us.

Yep, I keep bumping this thread back up because it is important that we not abuse induction.
Basically the book says to go back to induction UNTIL you are in ketosis, then return to the rungs. Even if you have a whole day cheat, He suggests you just go on dropping down 5 carbs and moving forward...
