  • My Evening..life as a farmer :)

Well I planned dinner. Had a ham roast in the crock pot this morning and was ready to go.

4:30pm - 2 ewes (female sheep) are about to give birth.

4:45pm - nothing happening, come inside to feed kids. Shovel in some brocolli and some of the ham roast - but very little.

5:00 - back outside at the barn....1 gives birth in the hay. Twins - simple birth... so quick the kids missed it.

5:15-6:10 - in the barn watching #2 give birth. Had the kids lock up the dog etc. Momma is having a tough time - gets 1 out and the 2nd one didn't want to come out. She's tired so I help and pull #2 baby lamb out..... right after that one follows #3!!!! Help her pull that one out (I wasn't prepared to be a labor nurse this evening so my hands are now gross). Make sure everyone is breathing including momma. Get her up to do her thing....come inside and now I am pooped.

I might just have a protein shake just because I can and I have ample carbs left for today. I don't want more ham - and I ate so much brocolli and I'm just done with it. Maybe a cheese omlet with some brocolli in it But that takes work.

I still am not done.... I can't take a bath, my husband works the midnight shift tonight so I can't go in the shower just yet....I stink.... and I still need to go back out to the barn to make sure everyone is up - including momma.

Sorry guys - just needed to chat and with people who understand I can't come in and order a pizza or eat ice cream (which would be really good which is why the shake is sounding better and better)

Sounds like a wonderful, if very tiring, day. Would love to see pix of the babies...sucker for little lambs. And despite it all you are sticking to plan AND that's a lot of exercise - its even in fitday (sort of) LOL.

I agree your day sounds interesting and I too would enjoy the pictures. Good job birthing those ewes. Now how in heavens did it actually work out that they both went into labor at the same time? Just curious.

Oh I love birth. I like the Baby Story and then the one on animal planet about having a baby and seeing all the different animals birthing. Cool beans. I've seen over 10 real children born, it's along process and it's amazing.

We had a farm and I was a goat midwife mre times then I care to remember. Its awesome. I understand about the food. I work 2 jobs and only have 1 hour between them. It would be so nice to stop and pick up a pizza or hamburgers. Cooking takes up my whole hour many nights

Congrads not getting pizza, I can imagine how nice that must sound.

How many more are going to have babies this week?

I totally understand. I grew up on a small farm (what a great life) we had sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, horses, chicken , rabbits the whole nine yards. Thanks for bringing back the memories We had baby critters all over the place.

I miss it. Now take a shower and get some rest You probably will have to bottle feed one of the triplet lambs and your gonna have to get up in a few hours...... LOL

                      Hi Chicamarun-

I live in a rural area and have a great love for the animals on the neighbouring farms. As I drive to and from town, I find myself taking attendance! One farm has a black horse that has dalmation-like spots on his left rear and another farm that has a gorgeous flock of sheep. You may not have a ton of spare time but please may we have some pictures?
Last fall I visited Jersey in the Channel Islands UK and was quite taken with Jersey cows!
Hope the Mamas and babies are doing well. Good work staying on plan with all of that activity - neat story!

Well we lost ALL the triplets! Mom was giving milk on day 1 (after such a difficult birth I checked).... day 2 everyone was up and around morning of day 3 - 2 were dead in the morning and 1 was barely making it and died later on. Mom had stopped producing milk and we didn't notice. We won't be keeping the mother - she has had problems the last 2 years and it's just not worth it for us. Of course my heart is breaking over this wondering if we could have stopped it from happening and realizing yes we could have if I had paid closer attention to the mother and her milk production.

Some of our farm pictures are here and I am working on updating them today a little http://picasaweb.google.com/saccomail/FarmPictures2006

Sorry the lambs died... that's so sad.

I helped my dog when she gave birth to 9 puppies... it was an amazing experience. 1 died... She was in labor for over 12 hours... I thought she was all done after the first 8 puppies were born... 2 hours had gone by so I thought I could go to bed... but in the morning there was one more and it wasn't alive... but boy! those puppies were a ton of work!!!! little eating and pooping machines! We were so happy when we found homes for all of them! We got her fixed after that... no more puppies for us! whew!

Wow, I am so sorry about the lambs. I guess that ewe just doesn't quite have what it takes to be a mom just now.
On a happier note, your pictures are just great. Thanks so much for the peek! Gorgeous animals.
