  • Experienced low carber, induction again, worried about strenuous exercise...

I'm starting induction again next monday (but cutting down carbs, cutting out sugar and getting off caffeine this week) and I have some concerns about exercise and whatnot when I get back into low carb.

I'm not too worried about the induction flu and whatnot, I've experienced that before, what concerns me is that I practice MMA(mixed martial arts) 2 - 3 times a week and it's an intense 3 hour workout every session. All of the exercise is very 'bursty' in terms of energy expendature. You'll be sparring for 4 minutes and sit for the next 15. I'm concerned about energy levels during induction, I know they're going to be really low, but I guess I have a bigger concern about energy availability for strenuous exercise in the first few months of Low Carbing.

I need to go find my copy of DANDR, I remember Dr. Atkins talking about extra carbs for people who exercise strenuously, but I was planning on doing an extended induction, and very slow migration to additional food. I don't know how I'll respond if I have extra carbs in my diet if I need them for the exercise. Last time I did this I found that I triggered pretty easily the first almost 6 months.

Does anyone have experience low carbing while doing really strenuous bursts of exercise over several hours?

Welcome. After the first week i think you should see an increase in energy. One of the great things about low carbing is the extra energy you have. Once your body goes into fat burning mode you should see that. I have read some really interesting articles on the effects of low carb and strenuous exercise and i think you will be fine. I run the Bolder Boulder every year and two of them were run in induction with no negative side effects. If you find that you exercise enough though i would encourage you not to do the extended induction and instead move into OWL after your two weeks.

Let me go dig the DANDR book up, I'm thought he talked about it in there for long distance runners, especially during induction.

        ...

Hrm, nope, turns out that's not true. There are a few posts on this board using search where people talk about marathon running and whatnot on atkins, but not during induction.

Could be a holdover from old training ideals I guess. Funny how they get mixed up in your head.

I thought you might have hit paydirt there and a bunch of us, who have looked for clues for our endurance sport would have been so interested. There are a handful of people doing marathon, half marathon and or triathlon type endurance sport, I am one of them. We have sought the best ways to fuel up for the long haul. Just wanted to know what you know.... Thanks for looking that up!

I thought maybe you were talking about ht CCL levels for maintainance where he says heavy exercisers can probably consume more carbs....

I'll find the page later (off to bed) but it's the chart, either in premaintanance or maintanance , that show what a typical low resistant, average resistant, high resistant and avid exerciser can eat for carbs.

                  That's not for induction, that's for OWL/pre-maintenance/maintenance.

If you're exercising intensely, the idea is to have enough FUEL. If your body is burning fat, then you need to make sure you are eating enough FAT for fuel. There are many on here who have run marathons who do NOT carb-load. That is a myth. You just need to give your body the right kind of fuel and enough of it. Eat an hour or so before your workout. Make sure you don't let yourself get hungry throughout the day. Carbs are "quick" energy anyway, and if you're working out for a LONG amount of time, wouldn't fat/protein be a more logical choice, as they are more slowly metabolized by the body?

Well yes, I did say it was in maintainance. Just figured that's what Digital was remembering
