  • Re-losing...or trying to anyway.

Hi Everyone...I am new here, but not new to Atkins, and boy oh boy am I having difficulties. I lost down to my goal 3 years ago, felt great...stayed active and wham...I was hit with a monor heart attack, it was all genetic as this runs in our family, but I sort of lost it for awhile and laid off the diet...plus I tried low fat...well needless to say I regained everything. So cut to now...hubby and I are both back on it...we both stopped smoking in october, which added to the gain..anyway, last time around on induction I lost 12 pounds, he lost 18...this time around he has lost 9 and I am at 1 pound! Talk about feeling depressed...I am on heart medication I cannot stop...and I know that can contribute to the problem, but at this point I feel like I am fighting a losing battle...I have continued induction now to almost the third week..really wanting some variety in my food about now, but I know I need to keep going, it's just hard you know...and sometimes I feel as if I can't do it again...it won't work this time around, but I am desperate...I exercise daily, even going to Zumba..so that's not it.

My weight has been erractic since starting...the first week I thought it was going great...I lost 6 pounds, 2 days later it was right back on and the scale never moved, until 3 days ago...one pound as I said. Any advice? Getting frustrated here, cravings are gone...so not dealing with that...but would like some variety and some sort of progress. We started January 2nd, 2008..Thanks Everyone...you all look like your doing great!!!

    Re: Re-losing...or trying to anyway.

Hi and welcome back to Atkins. Sounds like you have had some tough years, but it's great that you are taking control of all like this.

It's very difficult to comment on why your losses are disappointing for you. Being that bit older than you were the last time sure doesn't help, and the drugs possibly don't either. People here are great at picking out little things that can make all the differerence, but to do that would need to have a good idea of what exactly you are doing. Posting a typical day's menu is often a great help, and it's also useful to know how much weight you need to lose.

The other thing is are you drinking a lot of water? I don't know what drugs you are on, but if one of them is a diuretic that may further increase your need to drink.

And have you just taken up all the exercise, or were you doing that all along? What sort of exercise?

Stick with it, I am sure it can be sorted out.

      Re: Re-losing...or trying to anyway.

      Hi Kate,

First off, I need to lose70 pounds. That is adding in the extra we gained while stopping smoking, gulp, thats a lot. On we go. I am cutting carbs to the max here trying to get this going,

Breakfast: Usually an egg, hard boiled or scrambled with cheese.

Lunch: Protein in the form of meat , chicken, steak, or a hamburger patty one half cup of salad with low carb dressing.

Dinner: Protein same as above, veggie such as asparagus, spinach, zucchini , Brussell Sprouts, all fresh.

Snack: cheeses, pork rinds ( needing crunch!) summer sausage, an occasional small cup of fresh strawberries.
I am drinking water, possibly not enough, I will increase that.

That's it...Like I said, I am at a loss here, the amount of exercise is new...I have not usually done this much. I now exercise daily.
I just finished weighing...and low and behold...3 more pounds gained. I am going the wrong way here...I know it is impossible to gain that much in one day, so I am sure there are other factors, just not sure what they are. I lost the weight before while already taking High Blood pressure pills, the only change in meds is Plavix and Lipitor, as of now, I cannot stop taking these.

Thanks for any input...its very needed right now. I will not give up! I know this lifestyle works and I so very much need it to.

There can be so many reasons for short term weight issues, water retention, hormonal issues, the list goes on and on.

You seem to be eating pretty well, make sure you get enough water and keep going. Take progress pictures, do measurements. Don't live by the scale alone!

          keep it up!

            Re: Re-losing...or trying to anyway.

Let's take a look at the menu, shall we?

Breakfast: Usually an egg, hard boiled or scrambled with cheese.
You need more than one egg. Try 2-3 eggs. Add a veggie: mushrooms, zuchini, something in the omelette.

Lunch: Protein in the form of meat , chicken, steak, or a hamburger patty one half cup of salad with low carb dressing.
You need to eat an ENTIRE cup of salad.

Dinner: Protein same as above, veggie such as asparagus, spinach, zucchini , Brussell Sprouts, all fresh.
Put butter on those veggies, or a drizzle of olive oil. Put some cream cheese on celery sticks. Dip the veggies in ranch dressing. Add another cup of salad (you're supposed to have 2 cups of leafy greens per day, plus a cup of another veggie.)

Snack: cheeses, pork rinds ( needing crunch!) summer sausage, an occasional small cup of fresh strawberries.
            No strawberries until OWL.

I am drinking water, possibly not enough, I will increase that.

Guess what? You aren't eating enough. You probably aren't getting enough fat, either, though perhaps with the pork rinds you are.

You should increase your caloric intake and make sure you are getting sufficient fat with every meal to maintain ketosis. Do you use fitday.com? If not, go get your free account. You can keep track of all of the foods and percentages you need to on that site - helps a LOT!

You're going to do just fine. Try for 3-4 bottles of water per day, and get that exercise!

              Re: Re-losing...or trying to anyway.

One of the things I have learned is the more fat I ate the more fat I lost. It doesn't seem like you are eating nearly enough and combining that with strawberries right now might just be whats doing it. I agree with the suggestions from evermind. Don't be afraid to add more fat! I love butter especially. Sauteed onions and mushrooms has to be one of my favorite things in the world and I love atkins because I can have it!!

Stick with it. Everyone is different and will lose differently. My first time doing atkins after 2 week induction I actually gained a pound. I didn't lose until I was into my 3rd week. Don't lose hope and remember we are all here for you!

Ya know, I kind of thought that...not enough fat...I do use butter in my veggies though...and I use olive oil...I will increase the salad...and more butter, and cut out the strawberries and see what happens...I am past the induction phase, but I guess I could keep it going. I really appreciate this ...all of you, reading that others gained also, while I know it's not the best news, tells me that it can happen and I am not really doing anything wrong this time around, my body is just adjusting I hope. I will increase some fats...and add the water, exercise is not the problem, I am doing that daily, and really feeling good...so on we go..I will let you know how it's going, this support is so nice...I live in a world of thin people I think..they help. they don't really understand how I feel . Thanks!!!

                  Re: Re-losing...or trying to anyway.

Ok ...new menu today, here is how it has gone so far. By the way...2 more pounds gained this morning...AAARRHHHH!!!!

breakfast: 2 scrambled egss in butter with cheddar cheese added.

Lunch: spinach salad...tomatoes, bacon, onions , cucumbers and Blue cheese dressing.

Snack: cheddar cheese and a few pork rinds

Dinner tonight will be, unbreaded chicken wings we love at a local hangout we visit...dipped in blue cheese.

I increased the water intake today, so far I have had 4 bottles of 16 oz each.

I exercised for 55 straight minutes this morning, felt great!

So we shall see in a few days, I still did not measure myself, but the clothes are fitting the same, so feel there is nothing there, but it is three weeks today and seeing I had gained 2 more pounds this morning, well, you can see my frustration, but I will keep going. Just thought I would let you all know what I have changed and I really am trying here, just would love to see some results, however small.

                  Thanks!!
