  • People's Attitudes

Ok so the first time I did Atkins I stopped for a variety of reasons, one of them was everyone's attitude to me "oh that's SUCH a bad diet for you" and all the health scares in the media etc..... which are totally unfounded and generally blown out of proportion anyway. I am studying nutrition, and i can say hand on heart that if this diet is followed properly there is no way in the world it could be considered unhealthy in anyway whatsoever. I must admit that I had worries myself when I first read about the Induction, but that is only for a short period of time, if you look at the ongoing weight loss and liftetime maintenance they're excellent ways to eat!!!

I was worried about the lack of fruit/veg within the Induction by the way, but read into the other stages in more depth, now I have done that I am certain it is very healthful as a long term way of eating.

Now second time around I am going to try an experiment and I wondered if anyone might care to join me....

My opinion is that the reputation of Atkins has been ruined through the media and other random opinions posted onto the web etc that have no scientific evidence to back them up. So I am thinking if I dont actually state "Oh I am on Atkins" I reckon loads of people will have a more positive attitude to the way I am eating.

Let me just give you an example......

My boyfriend is very careful about what he eats and weight trains and runs, he also eats for optimum workout, which means he actively reduces his carbs and tries to get a balance of around 40% protein 20% fat and 40% good carbs (vegetables, brown rice, fruit etc) and it definitely works by the way he is incredibly fit and has around 12% body fat.

So we are chatting and I say "I am fed up of being so unhealthy I am going back to Atkins and I am going to do it properly" This was met with a raised eyebrow and then a few lectures about how bad it is for you, high in fat, hard to maintain, bad for kidneys etc etc. So I was automatically swayed away from it, but then I thought about his diet and how he eats and thought "hmm actually he eats just like the later stages of atkins" and he does it without realising thats what the later stages of atkins are....

He never needed to lose weight, but I am sure if he ever did he would reduce his carbs and increase his veg/protein. In fact I know he would after the conversations we have about diet/health etc(so that also suggests he would follow something like the induction if he wanted to lose weight, also without even being aware of the fact that his diet would just like atkins induction!)

So i keep silent and have another think about things....

    sorry this is long haha

So I now go back to him and say "youre right I dont want to go onto a fad diet, Im going to eat lots of protein, salads and vegetables for the next few weeks and cut alcohol and caffeine out and exercise, then once I get to weight I want to be at I will start eating some fruits, nuts seeds, more vegetables and allow some wine if I want it. That way it will be do-able and healthy"

and you know what, he thought it was an excellent idea!!!

And you also know what..... What I described to him is Atkins!!!!

So from now on I am not going to mention about the fact that I am doing Atkins or anything about carbohydrates, I am going to focus on the "I want to eat more salads, vegetables and lean proteins" angle

I bet less people try to sabotage me then

    Just a thought

    Re: People's Attitudes

That sounds like a good idea - though maybe further down the line you can reveal it's Atkins and blow away his prejudice!

However his diet is not really like the latter stages of Atkins - the fat's too low, the carbs way too high. Even at maintenance fat remains the most important source of calories percentage wise. And nobody following a low carb lifestyle would ever, ever get anywhere close to getting 40% of their calories from carbs, even at maintenance.

In induction the proportions to aim for are about 65% calories from fat (though more is ok), 5% from carbs and 30% from protein. That's not in the book but was worked out by some study on the Atkins sample menus. A lot of people here track their food on Fitday and generally find those proportions to be right.

By maintenance, fat will have reduced to about 50%, but that is still very significantly higher than your boyfriend's diet.

One of the main reasons people stall or fail to lose on this diet, even though they keep their carbs low and controlled, is that they don't eat enough fat. Another reason is eating too much protein, which is really the opposite side of the same coin.

Fat is the key to being able to eat quite a lot of calories and still lose weight. I have not really dropped below 60% fat since I started (and every mouthful I've eaten since I began is measured and entered in Fitday - I know, that's a bit obsessive!!), sometimes it's up to 70% and I'm eating between 1600 and 1900 calories a day - so it certainly works!

LOL YAH MY MASSUSE TOLD ME YESTERDAY THAT aTKINS IS BAD RATHER lOW CARB DIETS ARE BAD BECAUSE YOUR BRAIN NEEDS SUGARS TO FUNCTION. Sry bout caps. I told her we dont need high fructose corn syrup, as sugar is a natural byproduct of all vegetables. Thus a modersated carb way of eating and not just any low carb diet.

            Re: People's Attitudes

LOL, I am SOOO glad that you posted this today Blondie! Thanks!

I work at a hospital and was always bombarded with this the 1st time. Today, I guess my weight loss was noticeable enough that 2 of the nurses made a comment about the same time and I told them, yeah, Dr T finally gave me the go ahead to go back to doing low carb and gee whiz you would have thought I ransacked the cafeteria and thru out all the gravy, bread, potatoes and corn that they insist on serving everyone daily.....I finally had to excuse myself and just leave to get them off my back!

LOL, so I went back to my desk and ate my boiled eggs and bacon!

              Re: People's Attitudes

it always amazes me how people react to it. Half the people I tell are all for it (Some have even been on it themselves) the other half are just so sure that I'm gonna die or my blood is gonna turn into acid or my kidneys will give up on me. It's always such an extreme reaction too never just a "oh, thats nice."

                Re: People's Attitudes

The minute I mention Atkins, people just roll their eyes and tell me how bad it is for the body. So I tend not to even bring up specifics anymore. Honestly, I don't think many of them have ever researched the diet. Personally, I have experienced it being bad for a couple of friends because they absolutely did not follow the program properly. It is really unfortunate that some people make it sound so unhealthy without really revealing what they actually ate while on Atkins. If most of them were honest, they didn't do it right. The results seen here on the board are amazing. That gives me the inspiration to keep going.
