  • Fat Without Protein

Hello All, I'm hoping to get a few suggestions here. My ratio of eating tends to be more like fat 50%, carbs 5%, protein 45%. I know that my protein level is too high in comparison to my fat level but I'm having a hard time coming up with things that are high fat without also being high protein. I have olive oil on my salad and use it in my cooking but my fat still isn't high enough. Are there some fatty food items that I am neglecting?

I don't think I eat too much protein, for example yesterday my protein was 1 oz cheese, one small steak, one egg and a couple of slices of salami. Am I crazy and that really is a lot of protein? It doesn't feel like a lot...also, I noticed that my calories are not very high at all, yesterday my calories were under 1000. I'm never hungry really and when I am I eat but am I not eating enough? I've never in my life asked that question because it's always been a given that I'm eating too much! I don't feel like I'm not eating enough but all the talk on this forum about ratios has me worried...

Any advice would be very much appreciated!
    ~Amy~

I agree with evermind you need to post some menus but i do want to say eating under 1000 calories, im sure your body is holding on for dear life to those calories, you need to be eating more. Also your protein ratio could be high because your not eating eneough fat, not that your eating to much protein. I know for me the way i get my fat up is to use olive oil in most of my cooking, when i eat veggies i roast them for the most part and use olive oil to drizzle on them, i know for others they like avocados, me i dont like them but if you do that is another good way to get some healthy fat in. You could also use butter to cook your eggs in, and you can eat more than one egg, my daughter who is 6 and 7 eat 2-3 scrambled eggs, me myself i eat 3-4 a day. I really think you just need to add more to your diet, and dont be afraid of fat, at least the good kind, like olive oil, im telling you roasted veggies and veggie stir fry's are a good way to get the fat in.

Salmon is a wonderfully fatty foody, avocados, butter, heavy cream, oils. You have a lot of options.

It doesn't seem to me that you are eating too much protein at all, just not enough fat. Fat is very calorie dense, so adding just a little can make a very big difference to your percentages. Doing so will also up your calories, which is not a bad thing.

An extra tablespoon of mayo or oil based dressing, butter on your veg, a little cream to make a sauce, chicken with skin on - all of these would be good. Eating fattier food like avocado, cream cheese or the like will also help.

It doesn't take a lot of fat at all to make a big difference to your percentages. For example lunch for me to-day was a 6.5oz can of tuna, with a salad of lettuce, green onion, radishes and cucumber.

With one tablespoon of mayo, that would be fat/carb/protein: 37/5/58. Add another tablespoon and it becomes 53/4/43 - which is quite a difference. I am still eating the exact same amount of tuna, but now my protein has dropped from 58% to 43% and my fat risen from 37% to 53%.

It also takes my calories from 322 to 422 for the lunch - which is fine.

And a tablespoon is not very much mayo - it's not a great heaped spoonful remember, it's a level spoonful.

lol or you can just add bacon. Mmm bacon.

i use butter in the vast majority of my cooking. Cream cheese, mayo, and heavy cream are also excellent sources of fat. Post a couple menu's and we can see what might be lacking.
