  • Thoughts on Dieting, cravings, treats and an Atkins Way of Life

(parts of this post are stolen from another response I had written, and it got me thinking)

Atkins is different for me this time. I've struggled for weeks now trying to figure out what changed. I'm still pretty much the same guy I was a couple of years ago, a little older and hopefully wiser, but it hasn't been a big change.

I don't have any cravings this time around, like none. I prepare all my own food ahead of time, I'm still keeping an eating journal, Atkins has become a part of my life instead of a phase in my life. I think that's the biggest change for me mentally. This isn't a means to an end... there's no finish line for me, this is a switch in my fundamental relationship with myself, my personal worth internally and my relationship with food.

I wanted to share some thoughts about it and get your feedback.

Try to get past your cravings, replace them in your head with anything else. I've noticed over the years is that cravings and 'products' wind up being a gateway back to the dark side. Fact is, no "low carb" treat ever tastes as good as the real thing and often people wind up sliding back because it's a much shorter step from 'low carb' treat to real treat.

I know for me personally I stalled for 6 months eating "products" the first time I did atkins some years ago. I lost 75 lbs quickly, in about 9 months, but stayed there with 50+ to go for a long time, because I didn't commit to the real lifestyle change, I wanted my cake and to eat it to, so to speak. This time around I've made a lifestyle commitment, not just a 'diet' or short term change, but a change in my life and the difference mentally for me is huge. I can walk by the candy aisle in the supermarket and not care. Plate of donuts at work? Doesn't interest me. That's the first time in my LIFE I can say that, and I attribute it to the change in mental focus and making a real commitment to myself and my own self worth.

You should ask yourself, what do you want from Atkins? To lose some weight, or to change your life? Reading all the stories of the successful people here, they didn't do this as a diet. They did this as a life change. Realizing that was powerful for me.

    Good luck, and stay strong!

I think you are absolutely right. The way I see it, this is no different from when I quit smoking....one day I was a smoker, the next day I wasn't and I had to start living my life as a non-smoker.

Now that I have changed my eating habits, I am trying to live my life as a healthful eater.

I noticed that change this time around too. The first time it was all about setting goals and reaching them. I"ll be thin this Cmas. or, I'll be ready for summer this year!

Blah! I really don't care how long it takes.. I just want to take it one day at a time and make permanent changes.

      mental focus!

        Hi Digital

It was funny reading your comments as I was thinking exactly the same this morning!

I have tried Atkins about 3 or 4 times. In 1994 I did really well in time for my wedding and then got pregnant on honeymoon and so came off the plan.

The other times, I relied heavily on low-carb alternative products (which are REALLY EXPENSIVE in the UK and hard to find). Like you say, you just end up craving the real thing and your carb level increases and increases until you finally give up. I am determined not to go down that road this time. I haven't even bought low-carb ketchup.

It's inspiring to hear that you are still feeling like this after several weeks on the plan. I am just on day six of induction but am feeling strong!!

Good luck - it sounds like nothing will stand in your way this time.

          Oh, one other thought:
I used to think I was treating myself if I went off plan for the night/weekend whatever but now I realise it is just punishing myself physically and mentally.
It's my birthday on Monday and I am going on hols next month and am determined to stick to plan (except I will have alcohol on holiday). Before, I would definitely have just eaten whatever I wanted (probably to the extreme).

            Amazing post!

I agree, I believe I'm doing better this time around than my first time. I'm not tempted by the low carb products out there as they just give me a craving. Even sugar free desserts that I allowed myself last time have no real appeal to me this time around.

I believe Atkins is not only about improving your eating habits but improving your life overall.
