  • Can't Quit My Coffee But I Need To! Anyone Else in this Boat?

    Hi All!

I am so happy!!! I am on my sixth day of induction and I've already lost 6.5 pounds! I am sooo happy with myself! I know that we're not allowed milk but I must admit that I've been having sugarfree lattes!!!! This is troublesome though because even though they're decaf I've been having headaches! Does anyone else find coffee hard to quit? I think I just have to throw it out all together!!!

    How is everyone else doing?

Re: Can't Quit My Coffee But I Need To! Anyone Else in this Boat?

My caffine problem came in sodas. I had to cut back to three a day then one in the morning and night, then one in the morning, then one morning none and I realized at the end of the day no headache or soda! Weaning myself off was the only way for me. Hope this helps. If not I know there are others here who kicked coffee I'm sure they will post.

instead of lattes go with a regular decaf coffee and for cream you can use heavy whipping cream. Splenda instead of sugar. Try to limit yourself. Milk is pretty much pure sugar and that is prolly why you are getting headaches. If possible you can even try to wean yourself off coffee onto decaf green tea which has much more nutrients and helps with weight loss. Good luck!!

Re: Can't Quit My Coffee But I Need To! Anyone Else in this Boat?

I was a soda fiend, and I found I had to give it up completely.

Decaf means caffiene has been removed, not that it is caffiene-free. You are still consuming caffiene, which could possibly be giving you the headaches (a withdrawal symptom after your body has come down off it's caffiene high). If it's a latte, it's probably made with milk, and usually they're made with something awful like skim milk, which has even MORE carbs!

Ditch the coffee--sugarfree, black, heavy cream-ed or otherwise. GET RID OF IT, at least for induction! Caffiene causes blood sugar spikes in many people, and can be very addictive, and is responsible for energy surges and then resultant crashes. The sweet taste could also be triggering the cephalic insulin response, meaning your body dumps a load of insulin into your bloodstream when it gets that sweet taste, even if it's not really sugar.

With soda, I had to quit cold turkey. I couldn't stop at just one...

You can give it up, you're choosing not to.

I am a soda junkie in the worst way. Day one of induction I went cold turkey. It suuucked for about 5 days, and now I couldn't be happier. I have more money in my wallet and less chemical crap in my body.

You can do it, I have faith!

Re: Can't Quit My Coffee But I Need To! Anyone Else in this Boat?

If you have been on induction for 6 days and you have lot 6.5 pounds, I personally do not see a problem with what you are doing. (Here is where I am going to get bashed I am sure!) I can see stopping something that is hindering your weight loss or stalling your weight loss. Neither on of those things seem to be happening with you. So, I fail to see the issue. The last time I did Atkins, I lost 62 pounds. I never gave up my diet pop, nor have I this time around. I think everyone is different therefore something that affects your weight loss may not affect someone else's or vice versa. I realize that aspartame was found to be detrimental to a certain percentage of people. I don't think that Dr. Atkins ever claimed that it was detrimental to everyone. As long as I am seeing results, I will continue enjoying my diet vanilla pepsi. I see no reason not to do so.

I never gave up coffee, and I never will. There's no need unless you find that caffeine stalls you. Or it gives you headaches, but why would it do that after years and years of not doing so?

Katie, I think you're on the right track. Why not give it up for a week and see if things improve? You don't neccessarily have to give it up permanently, but I think you'll feel better without it.

I agree that coffee/caffiene is a "your mileage may vary" thing, but I think anything we can do to get rid of processed foods, additives, chemicals, and addictive stuff like caffiene only benefits us in the long run.

So try going cold turkey for a week and see how you feel...

                    Thanks Snap, Evermind and Julirama!!!

You're right...it's not stalling my weight loss as of yet and it CERTAINLY didn't when I did Atkins four years ago (used to get an EXTRA LARGE Vanilla (NOT sugar free) latte and had CONSTANT whooshes!

I am getting headaches from the caffeine and I am not sure why so I think I might stop it for a week and see how it goes!!!! But it doesn't seem to be stalling me so that's a great sign!

                    Thankg guys! You're the best!

I would compromise and go for de-caff with cream (and splenda if you like it with sugar normally). That way, you won't feel completely deprived!

I had to give up the diet coke completely as I am an all or nothing person but I am happy with green jasmine tea and one or two cups of decaff with cream.

For me it was the Starbucks Chai Tea lattes- about 46 grams of SUGAR!! and I used to drink VENTIS. Crazy. I used to drink coffee- rather alot of coffee - like 10 cups + and gave it up for personal reasons. BUT - I absolutely love the smell of fresh brewed coffee. I would love to work at Starbucks simply for the smell. I had to laugh because this morning my honey went and bought those java logs for the fireplace and our house now smells like coffee. I still miss the taste but knew it had to go.

                            Here's my 2 cents.

I use to make a pot of coffee every morning by habit.. until my husband switched to green tea because the caffiene made him queesy when he was teaching in front of a class... now he swears by it. I continued to make a pot every morning an had a cup for myself until I started back on this woe. I stopped and tried green tea to replace it and couldn't really get into that habit. I drink the green tea on occasion but not really in the morning to replace the coffee. Now I just don't make coffee at all. If we're out and about and happen to be at Starbucks I will order a reg. coffee and ask for heavy cream and splenda or use half and half... it's still better than straight milk. I average about a cup of coffee every week in a half or so. It's nice to have it as a treat, usually on a day off where I have more time to plan my meals, but I found when I drank it every morning, after 3-4 hours I was starving!!! I like knowing I don't NEED it while at the same time knowing I don't have to cut it out of my life forever. Everyone is different.
