  • Geez.... I've been sidetracked by coleslaw

So, my kid and I go to KFC this afternoon for dinner. I get my usual chicken breast. Then I pick a side. I thought I was doing good by picking coleslaw. After all ... it is mostly cabbage... right? Then as I am enjoying my chicken and my coleslaw I asked my kid to go grab one of their nutritional pamphlets. (Now a wise person would have done this to start with.) I look up my coleslaw... and I find that it contains 22 grams of carbs! I was like OHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOO! Here I was thinking I made a wise choice...when in actuality I made a very bad one. I was crushed. Seriously. I learned a very valuable lesson from this experience. I plan to be much better informed before I put something that I am not sure of into my mouth. Live and learn...huh?

It's always been a mystery to me why bought coleslaw has so much sugar added. I just don't understand it, but it is the case.

Oh no, that is so annoying! At least it wasn't hideous - like 50g or something and should not have knocked you out of ketosis. x

Coleslaw has so much sugar! And it is usually icky white sugar added, too! Not even just natural vegetable carbohydrates! I love to make my own coleslaw but I don't trust any one elses! Restaurants can be so tricky! They make you think an option is "healthy" but often times it is just an illusion! At least you know now to stay away from it in the future! Did it knock you out of ketosis?

Coleslaw MMM. But yes, full of sugar. Why? To make it so yummy and keep the people coming back for me! It's a shame how food companies hook us on sugar! Sugar is the devil.

If you can get oriental radish aka daikon, it is a perfect replacement for the carrot. I don't add splenda to mine, otherwise I make is just as Lauren does.

Want to know a great addition to homemade coleslaw, if your rung allows it? Peanuts! Cabbage, mayo and vinegar or lemon juice, a dash of splenda, and a handful of peanuts. Give it a try.

I love peanuts! But... I am not on that rung yet. I think I will try making some of my own.
I had an upset stomach all day long today. I think it was my body revolting from all the dang sugar from that coleslaw.

Re: Geez.... I've been sidetracked by coleslaw

I found this recipe years ago and it is the best coleslaw dressing!
                        1/2 c. mayonnaise
1 tbsp. milk (or a little cream for us!)
                        1 tbsp. vinegar
                        Salt & pepper to taste
                        1 tbsp splenda

Mix all ingredients and use for your cole slaw. Best if mixed the night before for full flavor. Enough dressing for 1 pound of cole slaw.

I'm not crazy about putting splenda in but one tablespoon for a whole pound of coleslaw works out to eating not too much at one time.

My Grandmother makes her coleslaw by adding onion, cauliflower and bacon to the cabbage but the dressing is much the same.

That sounds delicious! I don't know why commercial coleslaw has so much sugar either. Maybe it acts as a preservative too. I don't know. I agree that 22g is a lot, but just be careful now and you'll be fine. No point in crying over spilled, uh, sugar.

I've added salsa to it before! I love coleslaw during the summer - and for some reason I have always made it with splenda....ever since I started making it back when I was on Atkin's the 1st time.

I use 1 tbsp splenda - lemon juice and a few scoops of mayo to the desired creaminess

What I meant by not hideous was that it was a mistake and at least it should not have knocked you out of ketosis. Obv that is a lot of sugar in coleslaw so the food itself is hideous. I hope you know what I mean!!
