  • Suffering Extreme Hair Loss This time. Splenda?

I'm am sorry if this is Not the right place for this. But I am desperate for feedback. I am suffering from extreme hair loss this time around. And it is NOT improving. Soon I may have to buy a wig. I can not longer hide my scalp.
Been to the doctor...Blood work was all good.. including Thryoid. Have been on Thyroid meds for years. Again. Not the culprit.
SO I have been doing research online. And found a few links to hair loss and Regular Splenda Use. Which I don't just put in my coffee, but is in a LOT of low sugar/ Low Carb products.
    ANYONE???
    Thanks in advance!

Re: Suffering Extreme Hair Loss This time. Splenda?

Well, I always lose a TON of hair after I lose 25-30 lbs. Luckily, I have thick hair, so only my hairdresser and my shower drain know, but it comes out in wads. That is usually why the hair loss occurs - shock at weight loss. It grows back.

I hadn't heard that about splenda. I use a fair amount of splenda, and except for the 30 lb deal, no side effects.

I do want to know, however, what low carb/low calorie foods you are eating that contain splenda? You shouldn't be eating anything prepackaged, so the only splenda would be what you put in the food yourself.......

Ya know... two of my pals experienced something similar. As soon as they gave up Diet Coke, the hairloss stopped. Are you drinking diet drinks? Maybe try cutting those out?
      Good luck!

Re: Suffering Extreme Hair Loss This time. Splenda?

        Thanks.
I am not going to lie. I have been using Splenda on a very regular basis. When I mention Low carb Products. I am talking about anything and everything. Salad Dressing, Diet drinks, Basically Anything that says Low Sugar, Carb well, Carb Smart ect ect.

Here is what I Do know about hair loss. It goes in 3 month cycles.
So if you go through extreme stress. 3 months later you will have increased hair loss.
Weight Loss. This could be 10 lbs a month for 3 months.. Again 3 months later you will have increased hair loss.
        Some with Thyroid ect...
Here is the kicker. Not only does it take 3 months (regardless of trigger) for you hair to react in Loss.
But the hair loss Also Lasts 3 months. Then slows down to normal and hair starts to grows back.

Mine has been going on for 6 months or more and instead of getting better.. It is getting WORSE.
I googled Splenda and Hair Loss this morning.
I AM FLOORED. By the amount of links and pages pertaining to this.
Not only that it can cause excessive hair loss.
But, Muscle pain, weakness, depression, sleep depravation, anxiety, wieght gain or stall, the list goes on and on ...

It is a chemical and considers a arsenic.
This is the same family of Chemicals of other artificial sweetners that would be in Diet Soda's!
And we are feeding it to are children. Splenda advertising comericials, have Mom's giving it to small children. I have!

I am immediately switching to Stevia! And avoiding it and all other artificial sweetners whereever I can. Not going to be easy! And they cause you to crave more of the same.

I hope to hear from people that may have suspected or had the same things happen to them.
I think if this is All true. The word needs to get out!

Re: Suffering Extreme Hair Loss This time. Splenda?

I don't really think Splenda is involved. I had Splenda before Atkins and I had it after. I think it's just from the shock to the body of changing my woe. After a few months I started to have hair loss (just like last time) and it probably lasted about 6 months. I know hair grows in cycles and you just have to wait it out. My hair stopped falling out a couple of months ago, so I guess it started at about 3mo and stopped around 9mo.

I think it was a fast fix for them. If I remember correctly, I would say within a week they noticed a difference. (not hair growing in, but less hair coming out )

Re: Suffering Extreme Hair Loss This time. Splenda?

To be honest hair loss is the reason I stopped this woe before after a 60 pound loss over 7 months. It was coming out in clumps, I took biotin to help but I didn't notice a difference. I think it grew back after a while, it defiantly stopped falling out after about 3 months. Hair loss is my biggest fear this time around and reason I've waited 3 years to restart. I think it is the shock of losing so much weight which is why I'm trying to slow it down this time, remember to take a multi vitamin everyday and eat more veggies and less "products" this time, just in case it has something to do with nutrition. I feel for you! My hair is the only thing I really love about myself at the moment.

This happened to me, too the first time I did atkins 3 years ago. I didn't have any noticable bald spots, but my hair was coming out fast! I lost 1/2 my hair thickness. I went to my dr. and you know what she said? Oh, you've still got enough hair! THAT WAS NOT THE POINT! Anyways...it did stop falling out, but it was never thick again like it was. But I didn't take supplements on a regular basis last time, either. This time, EVERY DAY! I hope it doesn't start again. This is my 3rd week this time around.

                    Are you taking any supplements???

I have a friend who experienced hair loss. She started taking prenatal vitamins(she's not preggers) & her hair is once again growing!! The bonus is her nails are stronger also!

Hair loss isn't specific to Atkins, it's the shock of weight loss.

I'd rather have less hair for a short time than a large butt for the rest of my life personally.

I have done a bit of reading on this topic. Hair has three stages that cycle - growing, resting, and resting/falling. My eyelashes are confused and go through the stages at almost all the same time. Seems to be brought on by times of high stress. My doctor was unconcerned - hmm, well at least they grow back!

last summer after my wedding and losing a lot of weight from dec to june, i was losing a lot of hair...i mean a lot. so much that the top of my head was difficult to camouflage with the combover!!! i was freaking out! i had thyroid and hormone tests...all came back fine. the doc said it was simply stress. not that the stress was negative but losing so much weight and the business of the wedding affected my body that way. i started using a shampoo from arbonne which is really pricey but has lasted me since august and i still have lots left......i don;t know if it helped or not but i am regrowing my hair. i lost lots of hair when i lost weight before. it is disconcerting but it does come back. my hairdresser said that as long as the follicle is not damaged, you will regrow hair. sorry for this...i know how you feel. i was sooooo worried about being bald as my loss was terrific
