  • Does anyone know how to use a sewing machine??

Kind of random, I know, but I have been paying mucho $$$$ to my tailor lately to do simple things like hem and take in EASY stuff, and I was thinking I might just roll down to Target and buy myself a sewing machine and try to do some of this stuff myself.

My question is, how hard is it to figure out how to use a sewing machine? I mean, I took Home Ec in 7th grade and all I remember is my teacher telling us to NEVER EVER lose the bobbin. That anyone who lost the bobbin was in big trouble. What in the world is so special about the bobbin anyway?? .....but I digress.

Can I figure out how to do some very simple stitching on my own or should I borrow someone's machine to make sure I can figure it out before buying one of my own?

Borrow a machine first & see if you can do what tailoring you want. I would highly recommend not buying a machine from Target or Walmart as they are cheap. I know people who have had nothing but trouble with these machines. Their investment was a waste & they caused nothing but frustration.Go to a sewing machine shop & check out what is available. You may spend a bit more but in the long run it is a worth while investment.

I second Glenda's advice. Go to a reputable dealer. My Husquavarna dealer has used machines (from people who have traded up) and offer GREAT classes plus machine service too. I bought a used serger for less than $100.00 and they taught me how to use it. I learned to sew as a teenager and things have changed SO much since then, lol.

Cheap machines are just that, cheap. You really will be happier with a quality machine, but your jaw will drop to the floor when you find out how much they are! Go to a sewing shop and check out the quality used machines. They might even throw in some sewing lessons for you (not sure about w a used machine.)

There's a lot you should be able to do, even as a beginner. I've been a beginner for decades! Just last night though, I tried to fix a little place next to a hidden zipper and I messed it up and had to rip it out. Oh well. I'll try again another day. I've taken in and hemmed all my ds's pants, so that's pretty easy. Let us know what you end up doing.

Sewing gives me a migraine! You focus so hard on the stitch you are sewing, and your foot seems to be miles away from your brain...one time the machine just would not stop, and I was pressing the pedal like a brake, imagine that!!!!!! It was my foot that wouldn't stop....like patting your tummy and rubbing your head, something I don't coordinate very well!

i'm with jess....i can sew a straight line and can do things like costumes and easy window hangings....i would never attempt much more in the way of alterations than hemming my pants. i rarely have that problem so....

luckily i have a GENIUS who can alter my post weight loss favorites. she is so inexpensive. she altered my wedding dress MAJOR BIG TIME and she tightened ALL the beading....for $25. that is worth trading in the headache for me.

if you are really interested i agree that a class would be a great idea. i am NOT gifted in the household arts at all (but i can clean a mean streak!)

Re: Does anyone know how to use a sewing machine??

Hi Partytrouble- sewing is a skill like any other. You will have a few disasters, but with each disaster, you learn something. I think of it like learning to ski or drive a standard transmission. The learning curve is a steep one but well worth it after practice.
For sure, take a couple of classes. By all means look at used machines. I have two sewing machines that are both all metal parts and circa 1975 - they are built like tanks. I love them. I do a lot of sewing, and rarely do much more than straight stitching! Don't be romanced in the beginning with machines that will do 300 fancy embroidery stitches.

oh, dear. i thought it would be very simple, but sounds like it really is a skill that needs practice. i am not even sure where a sewing shop would be. is that the same thing as michael's or total crafts? oh, dear...

                      Partytrouble,
Don't be afraid of a sewing machine. If you sewed in 7th grade, I'm sure you learned something. It's true, buying a machine at Target isn't a great idea. But you can buy a nice machine (basic) from a reputable dealer and also get free sewing classes. Personally I find it very satisfying to take in my pants and hem my kids pants etc... and it does save a ton of money. The repairs I've made on clothes... (bear in mind that I have a football player as a son) has saved me mega bucks!!! You don't have to spend a fortune to get a good machine. You don't need all the bells and whistles! Although, those are a lot of fun too. Definately spend some time looking before you buy, and make sure you can get lessons.
