  • Goal just got further away....

    Hi Guys

I just worked out that my goal was a bit high and that I would still be overweight on the BMI scale at 160. I know I was very slim at 154 and my body liked being that weight so I have decided to change my goal now rather than when I am closer to it which would be very de-motivating.

I have set up a saving account and am transferring £10 for every pound I lose so that I can go on a spending spree for a new wardrobe when I reach target!!

    Have a great day.

You can do it, Zarabelle! I have been doing something similar to you, but instead of £ for lbs I am putting £100 in a dedicated savings account for each month that I stay completely, entirely cheat free. I figure in a year or so I will have a tidy sum saved up to re-do my wardrobe in smaller sizes! Sadly, I cheated in February so I've only gotten January's money so far!

I wonder about BMI sometimes...Does anyone know the science behind it all? It's just that like you said, at 160lbs I would be overweight by BMI, but 160lbs seems so small to me! That's why I set my goal weight at 150 lbs, so that I would be in a healthy BMI. 150lbs seems small to me but that's maybe just because I've never been close to 150!

        Hi Amy

I thought with £10 for each pound it directly relates to what you have lost. Like your £100 a month idea too.

How tall are you? We have almost the same starting weight! I am 5'6. Always thought I was 5'7 but according to recent hospital checks I am shorter than I thought! I looked on the NHS website http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/magazine/interactive/bmi/
and just typed in numbers (!) until ideal came up and 160 was too high.

I am not sure how accurate BMI is as we are all different builds but I figure if the docs measure it that way, I would rather be 'normal' than 'overweight' for the sake of six pounds!

I am currently looking forward to being 'overweight' instead of 'obese'!

Me too! It's funny to say it but I can't wait to just be overweight! I don't think I've ever been a healthy BMI, so it is just one step at a time to get there.

I am somewhere in between 5'6" and 5'7" so it looks like we have the same height, starting weight and almost the same goal weight!

OMG I've just checked my BMI and at 5ft 2 I should be 9 st 10lbs (136 pounds). Now this seems really daunting to me. I too put 160 because it seemed more realistic but 136

You guys..BMI is garbage. Complete and total garbage.

It does not take into account the differences in body type. An athelete can be considered obese on the BMI scale because muscle is more dense than fat. I'm borderline on the BMI (23.6 - the top of normal being 25) chart because of my height/weight, yet I wear a size 4/6.

Rely much more heavily on your measurements and a goal size than an arbitrary number. Just my

Re: Goal just got further away....

Well Amy, I think you should change it to 154 (11 stone which is great for our height and a size 12 from memory) and then we can be twinnies!!!

                Shirley, sorry to worry you.

Thanks Brook. That is reassuring! I do know that 154 is good for me though and toyed with putting it there at the start. I am definitely going on photo progression and clothes more this time as the scales can be a nightmare! x

Re: Goal just got further away....

I'm with Brook on this one. Depending on how much you work out, BMI isn't relevant for a lot of people. If you have a lot of muscle, you will weigh more. I was told at my gym that they don't really use the BMI chart... that most of the trainers (and ALL the body builders) there are considered "obese" according to it, when they are anything but.

Keep in mind that on Atkins, it seems that a lot of people weigh more but are a smaller size than ever before. For example, in college, my low weight was 165 (thanks to cardio and a low-fat diet) and I wore a 14/16. Now, I'm wearing a 14/16 -- two children later, with a stomach and hips to prove it -- but am 195.

Not trying to discourage you from 154, Zarabelle and Amy -- just advise you to take a closer look at how you look and feel as you get closer. Heck, you might find yourself quite fit at 165 -- you never know!

i also agree with brook. at 5'7" and 150 my BMI was "overweight".....my size 6 jeans said i was just fine. there is a lot more to take into consideration. keep reading and learning and take in all the factors...there is more to good health than just your BMI but i am sure you already know that .

Re: Goal just got further away....

Good to know! Thanks everyone! I thought the BMI rules were a little strict! I would LOVE to be happy with how I look at 165 rather than 150 (or 154!), reaching goal fifteen or so pounds sooner sounds good to me! I will keep reaching for 150 for now but I will definitely evaluate how I look as I get closer. I was never really wanting to get to a particular weight, I just wanted a particular size! I would LOVE to be a size 12 (UK, that's about an 8 US). I just picked 150 to be a healthy bmi!

Zara, We'll both be to 154 in no time!
