  • 3rd time around....

Hi, I've been dieting for some time now. My first diet was 1000 calories, I'm 5'-9" and at the time I think I weighed about 170. It worked but I was STARVING all the time and felt weak. I made it to about 145 just in time for my birthday, I celebrated with cake and that was it I couldn't/didn't go back. I eventually put the weight back on and more, getting up to 215 (I'll never forget that #). I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do a low calorie diet again, I heard about the Atkin's diet (the book like just came out) bought the book and read it carefully. When I told friends and family I was going on Atkin's, they scoffed at me and said "that diet is unhealthy", so I decided to literally test the diet. I went to the doctor (he didn't event know much about it) I took a blood sample, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and low HDL. I followed the Atkin's diet to the letter and in 14 days (after loosing about 14-16#) I revisited the doctor all levels were back to normal and I lost a good amount of weight in a relatively short amount of time, WOOOHOOO YIPPEEE! It works! Sure I missed the cookies and cakes but who cares about that I felt GREAT! I got down to about 150 and decided to celebrate with cake (bad, bad, bad idea). OK off Atkins, the weight creeps on back, so I do calorie counting with the help of DietPower (which is a very good program btw). Lost weight, stuff happened I moved, I went off the diet gained again.

Decided to go back on Atkins w/o rereading the book. I know now I did a bunch of stuff wrong (reread the book). I wasn’t really loosing so I switched diets to Nurtisystem, it works but again huge portion control and I really didn’t feel too good, headaches and weak. I went off that and back on again and that's what I am currently doing.

I'm sorry I made this post ssooo winded but I wanted to give you all some background b4 I post my question:

I want to go back on the Atkin's diet but I'm worried that I may screw up my physiology if I go off and on. The book says the Atkins method is NOT a diet but a way of life. Quote: "Another more serious concern I have is the impact this back and forthing can have on your metabolism…….. While this behavior pattern may work for the short term, it will probably backfire in more ways than one. It’s likely that your metabolism will adapt at a certain point – in a sense, developing a tolerance. People will repeatedly regain weight and go back to induction sometimes find that they do not experience the dramatic and easy weight loss they initially enjoyed. Add in the fact that none of us are getting any younger and our metabolism’s natural tendency is to slow down with the passing years. Finally, your body pays a price healthwise if you dramatically switch back and forth repeatedly from a fat-burning to a glucose-burning metabolism.”

So finally here’s my question: Do I go back on the Atkin's diet for the 3rd time? Knowing my history I may go off it again (I can’t seem to live without cake). I swore by Atkin’s, when I was on it I wanted to tell the world, I never thought I’d go off of it, but eating nothing but meat three times a day or more can be a little disturbing at times. And so here I am, help. What do you think, should I try it again? Will it mess up my metabolism?

Signed, Hopelessly wanting to lose the weight.

    Hi there

Well I think you are in the right place here at STAC. I imagine your story echos a lot of ours here - it certainly rings more than one bell with me.

The question is - how much do you want to be slim? A great deal I think. In which case, you need to change in the long term and think of this as a way of eating for life. I know it sounds a lot to get your head around but remember you will not be on induction for ever and as you progress through OWL you can add back an awful lot of foods.

My advice would definitely be to start again. Leave the low carb alternative products on the shelves in the shops and you should lose the cravings. I definitely have this time. I honestly have not missed a thing!

    Good luck xx

Welcome! I think you've figured it out, the CAKE has the addictive qualities and after indulging in, you can't turn back for a while. I agree with zarabelle, we can all relate. I have my trigger foods too and if I allow them in my life, I know I TOO will not turn back for some time. You definately are at a cross roads and there is no magic answer with atkins, it's the solution it's the cake that is the real trigger that must be decided upon. Welcome, welcome welcome....I would go with atkins, get back into that groove and good feeling and REMEMBER HOW GREAT THE ENERGY IS and the GOOD VIBES and see if you can live without the cake or keep it at bay!

You can live without cake. You choose not to. You know what you need to do to make the right choices in your life and for your health. I've really come to look at Atkins as a way of life, changing my relationship with food.

Just think how that sentance would sound if you substitue "heroine" for "cake". Makes it seem like you're addicted?

You might be, I was. Atkins has saved my life and changed my life, I hope it can for you too.

I think part of the clue is at the end of your post."Eating meat three times a day" Sounds to me like you just get bored. Visit some low carb recipe sites and get to cooking. You don't have to have meat at every meal, or even every day. Have you tried the wonder food? Eggs. Try new veggies. After you've been on Atkins a while, there's actually low carb cake you can make (if your body can handle it).
