  • Aloha -- second time for me

    Aloha all,
I'm new to the BB but not to Atkins. After my second son was born, I was at my highest ever weight of 180. I went on a strict Atkins and was faithful for nearly 4 years, dropped to 130 and kept it stable for years. I ran every morning and felt great! I loved everything about it and was very happy.

I had a trauma that set me off balance and I started to slip. Then I took on a very high-profile and high stress position on the job. 80 hours a week and little control over my food environment. I managed to hold my life and family together well, but my health suffered. I'm back to a calmer and balanced job position. After nearly 4 years I am right back to my original state... 176 pounds.

As I was putting it on, I just believed that loosing it would simply take a recommitment to Atkins. I was really good at Atkins. This fat hasn't been with me for so long, so it should be easy to take off, right? WRONG.

Something magical happened.. I turned 40. After 2 weeks of induction and ketosis setting in I found no movement and only bloating. 4 weeks and nothing new. I just couldn't seem to get back into my groove.

I took a break and tried a couple of other changes to prepare for another induction. I stocked up on supplements, started running and yoga, and eliminated coffee and alcohol. I went on a herbal detox. I'm hoping I can get this body to move back into a fat burning mode. There is a mental and spiritual part of letting go of fat.

After all of that, I am just starting induction again. I'm hoping that this time is a charm.

It is HARDER this second time around. So I know I will need support and advice through the process.

    Mahalo for being there!

Welcome to ! You've found the right board - We ROCK here!

There is such wonderful information and fabulous support on this board.

Congrats for jumping back on the Atkins train. I have found that this time around, it is harder to trick my body into doing what I want it to do. It has taken a lot longer to get this weight off, but so totally worth it, even when I feel like screaming b/c the scale isn't moving.

Getting your body prepped is a great idea! You are well on your way - You can totally do this!!

Best of luck to you on your journey!

              Coffee...
I love coffee. The first time around I followed Atkins suggestion to have coffee with heavy cream. Such a luxury!

But in his newer book he recommended against coffee. I suspected that coffee was driving some of my problems with weight loss.

In prep for this WOL, I went through an intentional ban on coffee. This was harder to kick than sugar! I had headaches and was grouchy. My 7 year old would say 'drink the coffee!!'
I feel really great without the coffee, but I still do love it. Is this worth it?
Does anyone else see a link between coffee and weight loss on Atkins?

Re: Aloha -- second time for me

For me the link is between habitual coffee (or caffeine really). If I drink it a couple of times a day or daily, I don't lose well but the odd one here and there doesn't seem to matter.

I drank an extraordinary amount of diet coke before I began, as well as a couple of coffees daily, and gave both up completely at the start. I did this at the same time as induction which meant headache **** and serious grouchiness for a few days - I think you are right to get it out of the way first, the two changes at once were heavy going - and not just for me!!

Anyway, once the addiction was broken (I had no caffeine at all for about 3-4 months), I now find I can happily have a cup of coffee when out with friends or the odd can of coke without any problems - either from a weight loss point of view or from it making me want another one. I actually find that having either one makes me reach immediately for my water.

But there was one week where I was at a conference and drank quite a lot of coffee and coke over a couple of days, and although I had eaten right on plan I put on 2lbs. It could have been co-incidence, but it was enough to warn me to keep them as occasional.

                  Aloha Kate,
Thanks for the post! I'm relieved by what you say. Maybe it is something like carbs, you can find a balance with a few carbs once you reach maintenance. But for now I'll keep it off limits.
When I tried to make all the changes at once, I would break down. I'm finding it is better to pace myself with one major change at a time. Breaking coffee was really hard.
Water is the key! I needed water to break the coffee addiction. It took a solid week. I shouldn't be tempted again so soon.

Re: Aloha -- second time for me

Welcome - and kudos to you for breaking the coffee habit! I was told that coffee wreaks havoc on hormones, insulin is a hormone, ergo fat retention problems when you drink it. I cut down to 1 cup per day, and then daylight savings time happened! I do believe they are connected. I was able to lose the first time around after having cut down to 1 cup a day, but I may have to cut it out this time.

It definitely IS harder second time around, I'm gaining even though I'm following the plan. I hope I get this thing figured out, hope you do, too. What's the alternative? Gain even more? Lots of people do that. Not an option for me. Hang in there!

Aloha Christine, I bet you are right that there is a link between caffeine and insulin. If so, it would make sense that coffee makes it harder to lose.
The first time around I continued to drink coffee, but it seems like I can't afford it now. I'm going to keep it out of my life at least until I start to burn fat.
I'm trying to substitute green tea and convince myself that I prefer it

hi hula mom and welcome! i hear ya on the 40+ thing but i am almost 47 and SICK of everyone from my doc on down telling me" well you ARE over 40" like i forgot how to count...all things considered i am much happier and healthier than ever before but you are right in that many things are different on this side of the big 4-0. but i wouldn't go back to my 30's for nuttin!

so you did a herbal detox? what did you notice with that.....i did that once.....i did not really notice much difference in the way i felt....i am curious what your experience has been...i could probably benefit from detoxing some of the junk from my system.

i don't have a problem with coffee...i drink i cup in the morning and that is it. i missed it too much but it does not seem to affect me one way or the other...

keep us posted on your progress!

Hi Misplaced Southerner, You are so right! There is no going back to the younger years and I wouldn't want to! I've just got to figure out how to adjust to my new groove. Its time to take ownership, take control, and live my healthiest.

The herbal detox was ultimately a colon cleanse experience. I liked it and think I should do it once every 6 months or so. I felt like all the backlog was clearing. I was completely digesting everything that I ate on a daily basis. A big flush, and the herbs helped to soothe and make the experience less traumatic. It is not something that I would want to rely on everyday, but once in a while it is worth it.

thanks...the one i did was a total body...liver, colon etc. i don't really remember feeling too much different but it was a while ago. mentally i guess i did knowing (or at least thinking) i was all detoxed. i find that the probiotics make me feel as good....i know my system is all "balanced" and that is supposed to aid digestion too and the use of nutrients when we eat. have you used them? i just take them along with my regular supplements

Probiotics... no I haven't tried them. Do you have a suggestion about them? Do you take them every day?
                              I'd love to learn more.
