    Thoughts on tomato juice?

I just read through the Induction part of my book (again) and read that tomatoes are better for the body after they are cooked...and how tomato juice is one of the exceptions for "drinking your veggies".

    What's you thoughts on this?

I'm not a fan of tomato juice unless it's mixed with mean, cheese, veggies, basically with food....but I'm thinking it would be one way to get my veggie allowance in during the rush rush life I have with raising my family and classes to deal with.

I love tomato juice! I haven't had any since starting this WOE because I wasn't sure of the carb content. I think I may go back to it though! I like it really really ice cold, not sure why but I think it's better that way. Also, you could add a splash of tabasco and have a faux Bloody Mary. You could have the celery stick with it and everything!

Well, there you go! I think the carb count would be high, but that's for one serving of veggies, and reality is...the bulk of our carbs NEEDS to come from veggies. I'm rationalizing this I know, but it's something to consider on days when it's just rush rush rush!

          Re: Tomato juice?

Welllllllllll, tomato juice is really not encouraged because it defeats the purpose of itself. IMO, it's in the same category as considering ketchup a vegetable.

We eat vegetables for nutrients and fiber. Tomato juice has some nutrients, yes, but virtually no fiber, and instead, you're consuming the sugars of the tomato. So it really in good conscience shouldn't be counted toward your mandatory cups of veggies per day, but I guess it could be counted as "extra" carbs in your day.

Another thing to think about is if you're drinking all those carbs with no fiber and no fat (well I would hope you'd eat something fatty with it) you must consider the effect of tomato juice on your blood sugar. I guess it's something to try, YMMV.

Anything with seeds are considered a "fruit". So that would include green peppers, cucumbers, peas, etc.

Frankly, that's starting to split hairs just a bit too much for me. Tomatoes have all that good cancer-fighting stuff in them. Good enough reason for me, whole or juiced.

                  Re: Tomato juice?

Sorry to disagree with you Juili, but tomato juice is not like other juices. It is basically the whole tomato ground up with the seeds and peel removed, and it DOES have fiber. Most other juices strain out the pulp; thus you get mostly the sugar and throw away the nutrition. Just make sure they don't add additional sugar or fructose.

                    Re: Tomato juice?

In V8 you're getting 8g carbs per serving (10g total-2g fiber). In DANDR, it says that juices should be added after fruits.

These portions contain roughly 5g of carbs. Food groups are arranged in the general order in which they should be added."

                    Vegetables...
                    Dairy...
                    Nuts and Seeds...
                    Fruits...
                    Juices
                    1/4 cup lemon juice
                    1/4 cup lime juice
                    1/2 cup tomato juice
                    --DANDR page 175

Brandy, you are right, tomato juice does have more fiber than I thought it did (I thought it only had about 1g or less per serving) and this gives an idea of when it should be added. Notice it's not counted in with vegetables.

I think it would depend where you are currently on OWL, if you'd want to consume it or not. If you decide to try it, let us know how it works out.

                      Re: Tomato juice?

I tend to use V8 or unstrained tomato juice every now and then if I've had a really hectic day and haven't gotten enough veggies in by dinnertime, I also really like the taste and it mixes things up for me a bit.

I'll generally have 4oz (half a serving) once or twice a week.
