Hello All, Recently I find myself getting dizzy almost every time I stand up from sitting down and even when I sit up from lying down. In the past it has only happened very infrequently and then not so bad but for the past two weeks or so it has been almost every time I get up and so bad that my vision gets blurry and sometimes I've even blacked out and fallen to the ground. I read that it could be dehyration but I drink massive amounts of water so I know I'm not dehydrated. Also I read it could be low pulse rate, I checked several times and my pulse was in the 64-67 beats per minute range each time so I don't think it is that. The last time I had my blood pressure checked (just a couple of months ago) it was 117/76 so I think that is fine, too. I have no idea what it could be but it is really driving me crazy! Does anyone have any ideas? I would appreciate any help! Thanks!!

Re: Dizzy When I Stand Up
I second what Big Tony said. You might want to check your iron. It would be strange for it to be low with this WOE. But, it's kind of sounds like you are having BP drops when going from lying to sitting and sitting to standing. Anemia can cause that as well. Again..........go to the doctor......this is not normal!!!

Re: Dizzy When I Stand Up
I get this lightheaded thing all the time. I've been to the Dr and I highly recommend you go. I suspect two things for myself. I cut out all processed meats and sodas and only drink water. I'm salt deficient now.
I also suspect it has a little bit to do with low blood sugar as well. Can't 100% pinpoint it, but we have ruled out heart problems (for me).~Joy

Re: Dizzy When I Stand Up
Thanks for the advice! Joy, I don't drink anything but water or eat processed foods either, so maybe not enough salt intake has something to do with it, though I don't purposefully try to cut it out of things! I'll be in the US next week and I have a doctor there I know so maybe I'll just go see if he can fit me in. Thank you again for the advice! Don't know what I would do without this board!
Sandy, I'm glad that you are over your vertigo now! I read your posts about it and felt so bad for you!

Re: Dizzy When I Stand Up
Aloha Amy,
I have low blood volume and have fainted many times. On this WOE I find that I tend to be much better with respect to lightheadedness.
BUT a few notes for you. If you are losing weight and especially water weight, then you could easily be getting dehydrated without realizing it.
My doctor used to advise to drink a liter of gatoraide. Obviously, that is too much sugar. So instead, I found a great health-store product called 'emergen-C ElectroMix' to really help me keep my hydration. It's a powder that is added to water to make 'sports drink' which replaces the minerals and such when you sweat or burn fat. It can be hard to find the sugar free version, but ask. There are also supplements that provide similar.
My recommendation... see a doctor, but do not wait to start taking something to boost hydration.

Re: Dizzy When I Stand Up
Amy, and salt may be important. We are so constantly told to avoid it. My doctors have given me the opposite advice. I need to add it.
Also, consider COQ10 as that helps with antioxidants and the heart. If you are losing weight you are releasing the toxins that were stored into your fat. This can well make you dizzy. It will have an impact on you. You need to combat this.
Also, exercise is still important. Make sure you do not use lightheadedness as an excuse not to exercise. Aerobic is important as your heart must get the blood pumping to overcome the condition.
Truthfully, doctors don't have a great grasp on what causes fainting and lightheadedness. I've learned a lot of tricks over time for my body's sake.
If you haven't had this condition before, I think it will pass when your weight stabilizes.
Wish you the best!!

Re: Dizzy When I Stand Up
Amy,
Sorry for the multiple posts. I really feel for you on this!
Here is the supplement I recommend:
If you do feel faint, please try to lay flat and let your blood pressure stabilize. You need the blood to flow to your brain. Sitting up quickly can trigger a blackout.

Re: Dizzy When I Stand Up
I even had a friend who contracted a strange viral thing that caused the same symptoms. Hang in there and have a doctor check you out. Jill
