Ok...sorta second time in a LONG LONG TIME...

Hi...my name is Becki. Back in 1998 I VERY successfully did Atkins after reading a 1992 release of the book. I still have it in fact. I went from 270 to 206 in 6 months...I worked out on a nordic track every day and I LOVED the way I felt, looked...everything. I never got below 206 though. I moved in with a guy who kept stuff around the house I found trouble resisting and in the next 2 years I re-started probably 30 times. I finally abandoned the lifestyle completely.

In that time I've regained all the weight and more. I've gone off and on Weight Watchers a thousand times, but here I am, still at 283. In addition, in 2002 I suffered a spinal cord injury and can no longer work out the way I used to because my legs don't work right. There are upper body options, but I get stuck in the mindset of "it's not like it used to be, so why bother". Bad attitude...I know.

So..this last week I've been seriously contemplating jumping back on the bandwagon. I'm in research and psych up mode right now. The 2002 book is on it's way and I want to read that first since I see things have changed a little. I actually don't think I can start for a couple months because of a current house guest. I kinda want to start...but with her here, it's so much harder and I know I'll be able to stick and do it the way I want to do it once she is gone. It's an excuse, I know...but I don't want to do this with temptation in my house again...I need a clean start.

So there is one question I do have. I know that there is that "one golden shot" at really working the program and seeing amazing results. I read about it back in my multiple restart phase when I was trying to understand why it wasn't working as well as it used to. What I'm wondering is if in all these years of NOT doing Atkins that maybe I'm "BACK" to a point where I'll be as successful as the first time? That's what I'm hoping but I guess I won't know till I try. Anyone else come back many years later and had similar results as the first time around?

Hope to get to know all of you soon...maybe even sooner than the June time frame I've been aiming for.

    Becki

Successfully did Atkins in 1998 using 1992 copy of the book...before it was "hip". Lost 60lbs, exercised daily, felt and looked great. And then I moved in with a junk-food loving man, my mom got sick and passed away, then I suffered a spinal cord injury, and junk-food dude left me...and now I weigh 292lbs. That's 22lbs MORE than I weighed the first time around. It's 10 years later...I know this will work for me again.

I think the Golden Shot is all in what you believe. I went on Atkins in 2001, lost 60 pounds rather quickly, then bottomed out. I had severe diverticulitis, so my doc said I had to go on a low fiber, low residue, low acid, low fat diet, with no raw veggies or fruits except bananas. I could eat apple sauce and canned peaches, but nothing else. I practically lived on white bread sandwiches, pasta with low fat margarine, boiled potatoes without the skin and bananas. I quickly put back on that 60 pounds and added 30 more. I have a very debilitating disorder called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy that had me bed-bound most of the time.

Fast forward to 2005--I found out that I weighed 296 pounds, and I didn't care if Atkins food hurt my insides, the fat was killing me. I went on Atkins by the book (1999 edition) on September 15, 2005 and I lost 102 pounds in 10 months. I made up my mind that it was going to work and that instead of going back into a wheelchair, I was going to ditch the quad-canes that I could barely walk with. I haven't had to use any assistive devices to walk for almost two years.

I did eventually have to have my sigmoid colon removed, but I now eat and love everything Atkins and will never go back to the fat blob that I was in 2005. I exercise at least 250 minutes per week. My many doctors just shake their heads at me.

Your mind-set makes all the difference. Stop the yo-yo and you will be fine.

    Sunny!

Welcome. I agree with Sunny on this one. The 'golden shot' is just an excuse that people make when they don't lose it as fast as they want. If that were true, no body who'd been on a previous diet would be able to lose. The great thing about this woe is that if you focus on your health with exercise, water, woe and supplements, then you will lose the weight. Maybe not as fast as we'd like to, but it will happen. Get excited about the changes, re-invent the foods you enjoy with spices and low carb recipes, make friends here for support and to keep motivated. You'll soon be busy having fun and enjoying this woe and prove the 'golden shot' as a myth.

Thanks all! I'm going to keep lurking until I officially start. That might be sooner than later...I really don't want to wait till June 16th...for now, I'm just gonna build my arsonal of information and keep pumping myself up. My 2002 book should arrive soon and I want to read it cover to cover to see what is new and different.

I might post now and then...but I will definitely be reading a ton on the boards!

            Re: Sorta second time around...maybeish

It's funny. I did kind of a pre-induction about a month before I started. I first cut out all fried, breaded foods. (Mainly french fries, hash browns, fried chicken & fish, etc.). The next week, I cut out pop (soda, for non-Chicagoans.) Week three I cut out sweets. Week 4, I maintained but started experimenting with the Low Carb recipes for things. Not really doing the diet, but in a learning mode. By the time I started induction, everything was fine. My family loved the things I prepared, so there was never really an issue with them tempting me. Once day 3 was done, I had no cravings. People ate fried shrimp, french fries, freshly baked bread with butter....It didn't matter. I really believe if you start re-incorporating the way of eating in your everyday life, it'll kick start you when you finally commit. Warning, for me my induction period losses were not as dramatic as those of many others. I believe this is partly because I had already drastically cut down the carbs I'd been eating. It doesn't bother me that the losses weren't mega-dramatic. The point is, the fat is disappearing, and my own body is burning it up. Don't be ridiculous, take charge right now. You'll be so much happier when in June, you're already 10 lighter than you thought you'd be. You don't have to wait for your houseguest to leave before you discover the heart-pumping cardio that works for you. Without it, you'll be disappointed anyway, so get moving, start small, build up. Baby steps still get you there eventually. No steps get you nowhere.

Hi, I don't believe in the golden shot either. First time round (years ago!) I lost 12 pounds on induction. Fourth time round, I lost 12 pounds on induction.

Good luck - you can do it!

                Re: Sorta second time around...maybeish

The golden shot is just silly.

I think you might want to look at why you consider all these foods so tempting and why you can't just start right now. A houseguest doesn't have the power to force a twinkie in your mouth, only you can do that.

Changing your relationship with food, and understanding WHY you wear the weight you do is really one of the keys of longterm success. I'm about 4 months in to my second time on Atkins. I had a lot of success the first time with Atkins, almost a year, but it was a daily fight to not eat that bread, not have that ice cream... I started substituting 'low carb' products and that just made the fight even worse. This time around I haven't had a craving yet. I can watch my pregnant wife eat anything she wants and it has no effect on me. I don't think I'd ever be successful with this process at any point in my life without finally getting to this place where I'm not fightiing with myself about food. Reading the journals of all the folks here who have years and years of success, it's always the same thing. They don't fight tempation much because they're not tempted in the first place.

Redefining your relationship with food and your relationship with yourself means as much to your success as eating right does. Probably more to be honest.

Good luck, you can do this, and everyone here can help!

                  Aloha KellyMe!
I did something like you. I went through a pre-induction quest. I eliminated caffeine and I did a herbal cleanse. I started running. I also started to really limit my carbs. I think it set me up well for induction.
Becki: I'd encourage you to think of one thing at a time. What is one healthy thing that you can add to your life NOW. Maybe it is yoga, or maybe eliminating pure sugar. It will be one more thing to give you the support when you gear up to do the full-on induction.
                  Good luck!
