  • Warning: Long-ish Post

    Hi All

I've been reading the forums over this weekend and they're just as informative, supportive and friendly as I remember them to be. Also nice to see some familiar faces - not sure if anyone will remember me though

I apologise in advance for the long post but I feel I have so much I need to say, partly to re-introduce myself but mainly because I need to really establish where I am and where I'm going

I was a member here back in, erm, I think 2005. I stayed on Atkins for 3 months but eventually got down about not losing any weight for weeks on end. In fact, I lost nearly 28lbs in the first few weeks and then nothing for the rest of the time. Since being away I have learnt a lot (and eaten my weight in carbs). I left here at 190lbs and then drifted up to 243 over the next couple of years I then calorie counted down to 189lbs and Christmas came along. I was fine over that period but then in January to May 2008 I just ate and ate and couldn't stop so I decided the only way was to go on the Cambridge Diet. That was two weeks ago and I lost 16lbs. I now officially weigh 211lbs.

As the Cambridge Diet aims to get you into ketosis I felt the natural progression would be to get back to Atkins. I was meant to be on CD for 6 months but it's a liquid diet of only 411 calories a day and I was fearful that my metabolism would just quit on me.

I probably should have posted here for advice first rather than plunging straight in. I am hoping that as I would have already been in ketosis and had been for two weeks that I could go straight to rung 1 of OWL. Previously I was scared to move onto OWL and did an extended induction but this is where I fear I went wrong. Everyone here was pushing me to move onto the ladder but I was so scared I wouldn't lose any weight I stayed put - and I didn't lose any weight!

As I mentioned before, I'm now more educated on health and nutrition and realise that this was the right thing to do. Why, oh why didn't I listen? This time round will be different, not that I didn't take advice graciously before - I will now take it on board and do what my body wants and needs.

I guess I really need some advice from the offset. I have DANDR 2002 with me but it doesn't explain what to do in my situation. . . I have jumped from eating 411 calories a day to nearly 2000. I feel great already but already felt quite good (if a little dizzy) on the Cambridge Diet and being in ketosis. I am now eating up to 30 carbs a day, 20 plus in veg. I have been doing this for two days so far so I can't really tell what the scale might be telling me or the tape measure as it's too early days. I don't want to put all the weight on that I lost in the last two weeks but I do want to have the best start possible on Atkins and for my OWL.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Oh and a big and to you all!

Welcome back to your ADBB family

If you don't want to do the induction as you appear to already be in ketosis, then spending a week or two on OWL rung one seems a good idea to me.

One problem I can see is that on OWL rung one we are supposed to add only 5 net carbs of veg to whatever level of carbs we were eating on induction.

Many people only manage 15 carbs on induction so would add 5 net carbs to eat at around 20 net carbs for the first OWL rung.

As you haven't done induction and therefore have no 'baseline' of net carbs to add to, then I think you might be better served by maybe eating at no more than 25 net carbs to start with, and then if you continue to lose weight add 5 more net carbs of veg and then move on up the OWL ladder slowly.

It would be a pity if you happened to be one of those whose CCLL is down in the 20-30s for then by eating at around 30 net carbs from the start you might only maintain rather than lose weight.

Another thing that occurs to me is that you might find that you actually put on some weight first while your body gets used to eating real food and delightedly starts to add weight in case you go back to the liquid diet again

I know I have seen a few posts from people who tried lowfat/lowcarb/very low calorie diets who then realised they needed to change and eat a more balanced lowcarb regime like Atkins who had the shock of adding weight for a few weeks until their poor staved bodies relaxed into Atkins.

Dr Atkins talks in DANDR of some people with messed-up metabolisms needing to eat induction for a while to let their body heal and recover from poor diet choices before weight losses start in earnest.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I'm not an expert but I'd say this if you want to do Atkins correctly and to stick with this WOL start at the very beginning and work your way up. Start with a 2-week induction and then move onto OWL. That's my humble opinion, also Induction only allows for 20g carbs a day and the first rung of OWL only allowed 25. So eating 30g carbs a day starting out isn't really how Atkins work. Read the book and do the process it's key if you want to stick with it!Welcome back and good luck on your journey!

Thanks for all the replies and welcomes!

            Dream - Thanks and

IrishMom82 - I should have made my post more detailed but the 30g per day are not net so I should be well under 20g. On that note, I can't remember the vegetable in question but the pack stated 3.8g carbs and 4.2g fibre. Can you end up with negative carbs? I never did get to grips with the net carbs thing, doesn't matter how many times I read about it

Elizellen: You look fantastic! Last time I was here you were well on your way to goal so it's great to see the new you

I definitely want to find my CCLL and will make sure I keep my carbs to induction level from now on for the next couple of weeks. I'm using fitday and am managing to get the ratios right at least! I weighed in this morning and have actually lost another 2lbs. That could just be luck but if it continues then I'll be really happy. I can't find the section relating to VLCD's/Starvation in DANDR - that VLCD must have sent me blind, doolally or both

I'll look into adding 5 net carbs in a few weeks

            Lisa: Thanks and

            Thanks for the advice

              Re: Warning: Long-ish Post

You've had very good advice, so I will just welcome you back. You will do very well if you read DANDR again and really follow the rules.

Also, since you are in the UK, I think the fiber has already been deducted, so there are no negative carbs. In the US and Canada, the lables make you deduct the fiber to get net carbs.
