  • Atkins cookbook issues

I just checked out this book from the library and realized that some of the recipes included are labeled for induction but include carrots.

Can anyone explain that Is the book wrong or am I missing something? There is a YUMMY recipe for hot mocha but I just mistrust the info in it because everything I've read and heard about Atkins says that carrots are a no-no for inductioneers. I'd hate to try it, have a reaction and be back to square one.

Just one sample recipe from the book:

15 minute chicken soup ppg. 99

    1 tsp olive oil
    1 tbs diced shallot
    1 tbs grated carrot
    3 ounces cooked chicken breast
1 1/2 cups chicken broth (low sodium)

There are other recipes on page 88, 83, 63, etc. that all have carrots listed and are included as induction friendly. I made the mistake the first time I went through induction of eating carrots and I had a full on binge about an hour after so I know not to repeat that mistake.

Anyone have a clue why these recipes are in here labeled for induction?

    Re: Atkins cookbook issues

I know from previous discussions that Atkins website & publishings are much different since Dr. A's death. Seems the goal is more about making money than Dr. A's teachings.

I guess I would stay away from anything that has ingredient not on the Induction list. Have you check out this recipe site? I've been very pleased with everything I've tried!!

I agree with Oz. Unless it was written by Dr. Atkins himself, I don't read it. You will love Linda's site. If I need something new...I always find it there.

The thing that irks me the most about the cookbook is that it was written by his wife. It's a shame how after his death they've tried to change the diet to appeal to more people just to make a buck--like with those horrible bars, blah. People will start the diet, eat the carrots or the bars or the shakes (thinking they are ok for induction) and fail and end up worse off.

One of the recipes in Veronica Atkins cookbook was for a sandwich on low carb bread. The instructions to make it 'induction legal' said to use one slice of low carb bread instead of two slices! Even recipes in books Dr. A wrote contain illegal ingredients. I take the recipes and apply the rules from each phase, to make sure I am following the real deal.

At least it was better than one low carb for dummies cookbook I got from the library. It said it was okay to use white flour and sugar! It said that artificial sweeteners were more dangerous than sugar. They had a recipe for peanut butter cookies that they said family couldn't tell was low carb. It contained white flour, white and brown sugar, but you had to use natural no-sugar peanut butter! No wonder no one could tell they were low carb, because they weren't. What was the point in using no-sugar peanut butter if you were using white and brown sugar??? Duh!

People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

lol. I've seen some oddball "low carb" recipes but that one has to take the cake. Low carb cookie my foot!

It's so easy to just take all this info for face value and really screw up somewhere. Then, after you stall or gain you start to think that you did something wrong because everything you ate was legal--when in reality it wasn't. At this stage in the game even if I ate a slice of low carb bread I'd be off on a binge quicker than you could blink! Most of the recipes in that book were totally useless as far as me adding them to my menu. I'm glad I didn't buy it--then I'd be really ticked.
