  • Company coming!

I started struggling this weekend already with my father in law coming for a 2 week visit. It's not him that I'm struggling with, it's the eating and celebrating every time the man comes. We do a LOT of family bbqs, camping, and we usually end up hosting the gatherings while he's here. I love entertaining and visiting with everyone. But I also know I need to be true to me and make sure I carve out the time for exercise and plan ahead.

Well, I planned ahead. I went grocery shopping and made a menu for 2 weeks that I know will work for everyone. We'll be grilling out mostly and FIL will have his favorite breakfast things because I called him and made sure I picked up what he wanted.

The one think I know I'll have issues with is carving out that time for exercise. I so DO NOT want to stop what I've started. I know he walks a little at home, so I'm not shy about asking him to come along with me. I warned him to bring his tennis shoes with him.

So if you have any extra happy thoughts to share with me this week, I'd greatly apprecaite it! I've fought like mad to lose 2 pounds this week and I really do not want to find them again.

    Thanks!

Sounds like you are already planning well! If you get up earlier than everyone else maybe you can go to the gym or your walk or jog? Ask DH for help...maybe he can do clean up after dinner while you get your exercise in?? OK..that might be a stretch..but my hubby would do it so I thought it was worth a shot. Invite some others. Maybe even up and down the stairs at the house?? It doesn't take hardly anytime to fit in some crunches in the morning and before bed and maybe some lunges. I guess fitting it in in spurts is better than not at all. Good luck.

Make sure that everyone knows how hard you worked and how proud you are of those two pounds you lost and let the excitement flow over onto everyone so they will try to help you keep the momentum going. Make it a family activity. As long as everyone knows that you are excited about regaining your health, they won't try to pull you back down.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Elsie and Sunny---thanks for your advice. My family usually does pretty good about knowing when mom's needing moments alone...althought they like to test me some times. You're both right, I need to make sure EVERYONE is on my side when it comes to exercise and eating right. I'll have to be an early bird if I want to get my exercise done. Maybe I should post a picture of what 2 pounds looks like on the fridge...too drastic?

Hey, even your company may want a break sometimes. I see nothing wrong with you saying, "I need to walk/head to the gym, etc for an hour--anyone want to join me? and just go. If they are family they shouldn't need you there every minute-they may even want some "me" time for themselves. Good luck and DO take care of yourself while they are here. I used to be very worried about family guests and in the past few years I have come to realize that they don't mind at all when I do or eat the things that work for me--I am happier and less stressed the rest of the time.

Lisa, you are going to do great, you are already ahead of this thing, being very proactive in your thinking. It can be so intimidating when others come into our world. But others do come and go in our real world and we have to find our voice if needed. To just politely create boundaries and balance. Thoughtful thinking and speaking is usually well respected. Re: Company coming!

I had family to stay last week-end and their reaction to our weight loss was fantastic and carried us through the week-end. We walked together and enjoyed what to me was excersise. The only problem I had was portion control when it came to the bbq chicken and ribs. Normally I put the food on our plates and we eat just that but at the bbq we helped our selves and helpings were a bit large. However, everything remained legal.

Best of luck to you, I can tell by your attitude you will do really well and manage to enjoy the family visit without too many problems.

I have 3 kids still at home including twins. They made it hard (or easy to find excuses-depending on how you look at it). So I put the girls in charge. Rebecca who needs more exercise is in charge of my walking. When I come home at night and too tired to walk, she doesnt take no. Knowing she needs the walk too I go. Rena' is in charge of sweetner use. If I tell her mom can only have 1 diet drink today, I assure you a 2nd will never pass my lips in her presence.

What a great solution! And they become more aware of your efforts and are on board with you (not to mention you are setting an example by working toward good health). Glad the weekend went well.

                    Re: Company coming!

chinadoll, Jess, cookie, lauren I really appreciate your words of wisdom.

China...I could use your relaxation mode

Jess...Thank you...Creating, maintaining, and enforcing boundaries is what I have been use to doing with my daughters, and outside family members. Why I think it's okay to let a few situations and "celebrations" cross my personal boundaries and interfere with my goals doesn't make sense. I must be the people pleaser three times over when it comes to making sure others are comfortable. That really needs to change, for sure.

cookie...oh, the portion control is ugly when it comes to gatherings. Sounds like you have a great testimonial experience that I can hope for!

Lauren...can I borrow your kids for 2 weeks? They sound just awesome! Giving my kids the authority is a bit scary to think about. They're relentless and very determined souls. Gee...you'd think I roped them in sooner. Maybe it's the fear of having them on my backside all the time that keeps me from handing over the reins...the little Enforcers...lol...

Thanks again for all your positive thoughts and help!

I've been cooking up a few things and cleaning veggies since yesterday, my C25K print out hanging on the fridge, and my little handy note book that will fit in my purse where ever I go. I filled it with a lot of notes to read and even tossed in a favorite pen to write things done as I go.

I know I can do it, I just have to believe it and put it all in to motion!

                      Re: Company coming!

Lisa, LOL my life is one big stress bucket most of the time so learning to deal with things and relinquishing the need to please is an absolute necessity. I live in difficult places, move every three years, have my sons in college 10,000 miles away and along with elderly parents, one of whom is battling cancer. I have learned to find peace and contentment for myself because no one is going to find it for me. I think I have just gotten better as I have aged and become aware of my true priorities. Even with all the craziness-- I am one of the happiest most content people I know.
