I have been very good except for coffee. Haven't been able to give it up and, to be honest, haven't really tried yet.

I wanted to know about your experiences--did it really make a difference? I don't find the caffeine makes me hungry and I would probably find this harder to give up than any food. It is such a part of my life. SNIFF, SNIFF.

I'm a week into my restart and I haven't given it up yet either, I will though. Soon. I think there's about 1 carb per cup too so it can really add up. I just couldn't face the headache. I will though, soon! Stop badgering me!

      Re: Coffee effects

i can't honestly say that i care too much for coffee, but i was an avid diet dr pepper addict. i didn't really think i could give up the caffiene habit either, but by day 3 of induction i completely stopped. i only had about 10 or 12 ozs each of the first two days, then i completely stopped the caffiene. if you wanted to wean yourself off, i think you can buy a half caffienated and half decaffienated coffee. then once you weaned yourself off of that you could go to decaf only. it may just be the taste of the coffee you truly don't want to be without.

i can't really say if caffiene has ever stalled me, i have drank diet soft drinks other times i've done this woe, and done rather well. this time i decided to try to do atkins the way it was written, even though i did wean myself off the first couple days.

      good luck to you,

        Re: Coffee effects

I fight the coffee consumtion every day (2 or 3 8oz cups)
with the heat of the day it was easy to stop the hot coffee
but I just switched it to ice coffee with splenda and cream

and like you I'll drop any food to keep it. Dr. A said in some people it caused low blood sugar which causes cravings for sweets. it does not do that to me. But I know I will have to most likely sooner rather than later
        drop it..
I like Monies idea of cutting down..maybe...I tried decaf once..still spitting it out! LOL

Well, I've never dropped coffee and it did not hinder my weight loss at all. I successfully went to 50/50 at one point reducing the caffeine. But truthfully I've always gotten up and had my 2 cups in the morning, day in and day out. When I over do, I have a strong cup in the afternoon. It's my pick me up. I could give up soda in a heart beat but not the java!

Can relate to all the coffee lovers. Have always drank alot of coffee. Did not stall me at the start, but later weight loss slowed to a crawl. So i went to decaf. Still slooooow. Cut out the half and half. Bingo! On a steady course once again.
Really have learned alot here. Thanks to all who contribute their stories and lessons

IMHO, trying to tackle too many demons at once is a recipe for disaster! If it's not effecting your blood sugar and your weight loss is stead, enjoy your coffee! You have the rest of your life to quit the coffee when and if you want. But again, that's just my opinion.

I admit, I never dropped coffee. Then again, I've never had it stall me. I gave up the soda, switched to drinking really a lot of water, but I will fight for my right to drink coffee tooth and nail!

                  Re: Coffee effects

Ah the mystery of coffee. Rather than hard and fast rules we all seek, I think it's contingency based, i.e. based on your situation.
                  For me:
I also love regular coffee. When I lost a lot on Atkins the first time, I followed Atkins strictly and dropped regular coffee <and whatever temptation it brought with it> and drank a ton of ice water with lemon. I found that weening avoids the headache.
I am dropping it on Induction this time. I know I will be a bit drowsy in the early afternoon and later at night without caffeine, so I am optimistic that I will be pumped up by exercise and better moods with my results, to compensate for it.
                  For you:
The Atkins advice is good because it is conditional, based on your own needs and food additions and whether coffee triggers food cravings. Check it out again and do what you think is best. One cool aspect of this mystery is you can experiment. As you make lifestyle changes, see what works, for you!

                    Re: Coffee effects

Thanks all, wow you all most have posted last night on this! It is interesting hearing the different effects. Definitely gives me some strategies. I have tried to go decaf and hate the taste but I have given up all diet sodas and sweeteners (except a once a month rootbeer float with diet rootbeer, vanila and cream). I am going to try to go 50:50 with decaf and see if I can take it. There are breast cancer issues and other reasons to switch to decaf so every little bit will help.

                    Thanks everyone for your imput!

                      Re: Coffee effects

I think it's truly a YMMV (your mileage may vary) kind of thing. I cut way down but didn't cut it out for a very long time--I lost just fine. Later, due to medical tests, I had to cut out caffeine for two weeks, so I decided to keep going. I stayed off it completely for six weeks and I didn't feel as good, had less energy and didn't sleep any better. I had a big woosh when I started drinking my two cups of coffee and a pot of green tea a day again.

A few months later, I had to give up all coffee and tea (even herbal) for the yeast free diet and again, I saw no benefits to it for me and when I started back up, I had a woosh of weight loss and my energy improved. Caffeine has always made me want less to eat, not more.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Boy that's nice to hear. I don't get cravings either, and sometimes having a hot liquid to drink fills me up and seems like my "dessert" and actually prevents me from eating more than I need. If I go to 1/2 decaf and put more green tea in my diet (plus my water) I figure I will be making a good start.

                          Re: Coffee effects

I have not stopped drinking coffee. However, I'm rethinking this because it is an addiction of mine. It's not that I'm a casual coffee lover...it's something I must have or else I am in a bad mood and whine about it until I get some. It doesn't hinder weightloss for me or cause cravings, but without it I'm a grouch. I'm ready to kick this addiction to the curb. I never thought I'd be able to battle the food demons, but I have and feel great. I think that coffee is next.
