    Re: I have a rant

I had one person at work who constantly brings in cakes, brownies, etc... and was very angry when I wouldn't eat them. It's been a source of constant irritation for me to have to listen to her go on and on about how unhealthy it is to not eat sweets "once in a while". But, I found that sticking to my guns, not cheating and keeping my mouth shut has helped. It's hard to argue with success. It's also kind of funny when you step back and look at it. The very same woman would complain about her stomach problems and inability to lose wt... eventually she started listening and copying me and asking my advice.
    Congratulations on your success.

      Re: I have a rant

People fear what they don't understand. Then they make up stories to reassure themselves that they are right and on it goes. I have taken to just telling everyone that my stomach is upset and I just can't right now maybe later and they are all fine with that. But yes, I do get it from time to time. Mine comes from church members that just can not understand why I don't eat the wonderful homemade breads. In comes my excuse and I have not had to explain one time since, and I am not lying because my stomach is upset, no it is really p/o'ed that I have been abusing it all these years! I went the first 3 weeks on Atkins before my family even figured it out.

The way I look at it is, that you were all very passionate about your choices. Them being passionate about their addiction to processed food and sugar, and you being passion about healthy fresh wholesome foods that are making you healthy, healthy, healthy.
I'm with Glenda, If it happens again, stand tall and walk away. You're the better person for it.
I've had people snub their nose at me. But I stand my ground and they eventually back down. People get pretty frustrated when you give them facts and they awake to being misinformed. Doesn't feel very well. I enjoy the heck out of it. Knowlege is power.
You did right by standing your ground. Proud of you. Now they know where you stand. It will be interesting to see them be humbled by seeing how successful you are and will be at goal! Fun! Fun! Fun!

Good grief that woman had a lot of guilt or something going on in her life. I hope you smiled and laughed hard while she was talking. I'm sure she needed the audience. Good for you not giving in and standing your ground!

              Re: I have a rant

              I hear your rant, sister!

I once had someone very seriously tell me (with their index finger waving between their eyes and mine) that Atkins "will damage your kidneys." I explained how it works, and asked where they got this information, but it was no use. There is no winning this argument because it is not based on reason, just rumor. Rumor, plus years of brainwashing per the food pyramid and medical institutions.

As you all have said, the problem is that the general public thinks all you do on this diet is live off hunks of meat and cheese, for the rest of your life. They think the diet is all about Big, meaty hunks of meat and big cheesy hunks of cheese. And then, how rude, you are also inconsiderate enough to refuse, that's right refuse, a simple, friendly sugar cookie or brownie when it is offered to you kindly (lovingly).

This came up in liquid form just the other night when I was out with friends to the local jazz festival. I was being good and avoiding beer, or maybe having an Ultra, and my one friends laughed and said Dr. Atkins died of a heart attack. I said he died by falling on an icy walk way, but ... ya know, it did not matter.

Maybe we do take the 'don't ask don't tell' approach. The problem with that is the first time I followed the Atkins diet, a neighbor stopped me on the sidewalk. She asked me, "Are you losing weight on purpose or are you sick?"

It's like we need an alternative name. And you all know that if you say "I'm low-carbing" that is sufficiently equivalent to saying, "I'm on Atkins." The friend/co-worker/whomever does not have to be a secret code-breaker to decipher that one. There is the "avoiding complex sugars" idea, that sounds innovative and well thought out, I like it.

This is worthy of a rant.

Hi....illy....I deal with this all the time...actually last week a supervisor said the same thing about Dr. Atkins and the heart attack. He'll also sit in the H.R. at 8:30 a.m eating out of a bowl of chocolates she keeps in her office. He'll try to shove it at me and I just so no thank you I don't eat junk food. And then it starts..I try to ignore it but it does get frustrating.I rambled in my journal about this a week or so ago..theres a girl in my dept who has spent money to join curves spent money to join weight watchers also the site costs money to join...and she'll sit there eating junk saying I'm still in my points!!! what the heck is up with that...and ice cream bar ...pop tarts and chocolate, since when is that considered a healthy diet points or not..I'll stick with my WOE any day over that...she's bigger than ever too..lol.
I just pretty much stopped telling anyone because they can be really hurtful.
So good for you for sticking up for yourself...

                      Re: I have a rant

Last time around, when I was in the workplace, I received so many negative comments it was ridiculous. People felt they were entitled to tell me anything and everything about how unhealthy I was and how my new "diet" would fail. Meanwhile, they were all overweight and ate so much fast food, it was disgusting.

Afterwhile, I finally told them that I was making a choice to be healthy, what were they doing lately? And, if they got really personal, and asked questions like how much did I weigh or what size of pants did I wear, I wouldn't respond but would ask them the same question or something even more personal. This usually made them quiet.

But, trust me, misery loves company.

                      Keep strong!

                        Re: I have a rant

I had this same type of thing happen last night at my sisters. She had twenty or so people over for dinner and I had grilled chicken and salad. No one seemed to notice I bypassed the potato chips, dip, scalloped potatos, and other off limits foods until desert. Then several people started asking why I didn't want any. My sister chimed in "she's doing Atkins" And the oh no you shouldn'ts started. My answer to that was, My blood sugar was out of control and in order to get it back in balance and keep from having severe moods swings that is what I have chosen to do. Plus I lost 24 lbs in 3 weeks. Everyone shut up! P.S. one of the men asked if it really worked on the mood swings..... he want's his wife to try it!!!

Good Luck! Keep up the god work!

I usually reply with "I am on the no "S" diet. No sugar, no starch, no snacks, no seconds." People usually think it's a great idea and never ask me if I am on Atkins.

I think we've all had to deal with this. As many have said, ignorance of the real WOE/WOL drives those discussions.

I just tell people that I feel the best I've ever felt, have more energy than I ever have AND inches melt away as well as pounds. No one can argue with avoiding sugar and starch. In fact, when I tell people to read the label on those wonderful (!) fat free foods they are eating, they are usually VERY surprised.

I say to heck with all the naysayers. I usually just tell people I don't really want to discuss it and 'let it be'.
