Just wondering if this is happening to anyone else? When I say losing my hair I mean chunks of hair are falling out. I am going bald! I was told that it is my low carb lifestyle. What do you guys think?

Re: I am losing my hair!
I'm no expert, but that sounds like a side effect of Kimkins, a diet fad styled after Atkins, but with very little calories and very little fat. In essence, you are eating small portions of chicken and fish. Not sure if this fits your situation, but perhaps posting a daily menu would help others here to diagnose. If it is a real, ongoing problem, I suggest a doctor visit rather than relying on internet friends!Eric

Re: I am losing my hair!
I agree with posting your menu this week, there's a number of possible reasons for hair loss. Clumps? Well, I'm not sure about that one. Not enough calories, vitamins, and nutriets can effect hair loss, as well as extreme stress and hormones. I know that when I'm extremely stressed, Low carb or not, I lose hair---it's like a cat has shed around the house and stopped up the drain. No, we don't own a cat. However, the hair that is replaced (and the stress level goes down), I have a nice shiny coat (hair) when I'm solid on this way of eating--my nails don't look half bad either! Check you vitamins, what you're eating (enough fat, calories, and nutrients), and drink your water too.

Re: I am losing my hair!
Hair loss happens to some people when they lose lots of weight. I think it's the body's reaction to the "shock" of losing (something like that... correct me if I'm wrong anyone). Hang in there... You won't go bald, and the "fallout" will stop after a while and your hair will get back to normal.
There have been threads about this in the past, so you might try to do a search. Before and after:

Re: I am losing my hair!
Personally I started Atkin's 3 months ago now. I've been losing my hair for the last 10 years or so. So I doubt very highly this diet has anything to do with it. Just going through phases we are. My reason is because I got married.

Re: I am losing my hair!
Mimom,
Sally is right. If you have lost weight rapidly, then your body may be reacting to the shock. Your hair should come back in three months or so. Hormone imbalances in perimenopause or menopause can also cause dramatic hair loss.
It can also be caused by vitamin deficiency. Biotin is a B vitamin that is known to stimulate hair and nail growth. Vitamin A is also an important vitamin for hair and Vitamin C is important to the collagen that keeps the hair strong. Check your menus on Fitday to see if you are getting enough of these. The biotin is something I supplement with daily.
Most unusual hair loss will resolve itself. It just takes awhile.
I read somewhere that high salt and sodium in the diet can also have a bad effect but I can't remember where I saw this. If you eat a lot of sodium you may want to try to cut back.
Don't know if any of this is of help, but maybe it is a place to start.

Here's some reassuring information written by Dr. Michael Eades (co-author of Protein Power) about hair loss and diet:

Re: I am losing my hair!
Yes, I've heard this happens to about 10% of people. There's some speculation it has to do with elevated cortisol levels...but I'm not sure. I'm so sorry. I have alopecia and so I know what losing your hair feels like. Run to your doctor and get a referral to a specialist. Don't take "no" for an answer.
Best of luck,

Re: I am losing my hair!
My first time around when I started losing some serious weight, my hair was coming out too! I went to the doctor ASAP and he said that your hair follicles come in different stages and some are in "resting" or dormant phase for a portion of their cycle. These are the ones that fall out when you lose weight because your body experiences a shock with such a huge diet and vitamin intake change. You will not lose all of your hair...just the ones in the dormant stage and they will grow back!! Mine came back and it's all good. Kinda crappy...but not earth moving. =0) Happy extensions ladies! lol...at least that's what I did!
