I wanted to share with y'all why I'm back on the board and back on Induction...It's really kind of funny.

As I've typed before (ad nauseum), I quit smoking about two and a half months ago, gave myself permission to eat everything in the house and surprise! gained weight. (On top of some weight that I kept telling myself I need to lose BEFORE I'd quit smoking but that's another story.)

The Smoking Cessation Forum over at about.com really helped me through quitting smoking. I highly recommend it for anyone that has quit or is thinking about quitting. Much like this forum. The people are kind and the tone of the forum is helpful, not adversarial.

I continued to think in my head that I was still basically low-carbing it, even though I'd eat a whole jar of peanuts in two days or a whole bag of sugarfree candy. Or even the chocolate dessert at Carraba's.

I saw the scale inch up, felt my clothes get tighter, and started buying size 14s which I haven't been in since my slide down four years ago when I went from 18s to 12s and stopped BRIEFLY in the 14s.

What to do? What to do?? The Smoking Cessation forum has an exercise and weight loss section. One of the girls there was getting ready to do the Master Cleanse. What is that? I spent a whole evening from one end of the internet to the other researching the Master Cleanse.

I had made up my mind that I was going to do it. Ten days of fasting on lemon juice, cayenne pepper, organic maple syrup mixed with purified water into a lemonade. I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.

The next morning I woke up and said, "What are you thinking? Why in the world would you do this torture? You can just go back on Induction and straighten your eating habits out. Are you crazy?"

And here I am and feeling great. Eating bacon and eggs, steak and broccoli. Cream cheese muffins. Salad with full fat dressing. Not a lemon in sight.

Now, I'm not knocking the Master Cleanse as I haven't tried it. I'm just saying that for my purposes, Atkins is where it's at.

I'm so relieved that you are not going to do that.

As I was reading the post, I was thinking to myself, "My God! I can't understand anyone who could possibly do THAT and not do Atkins!! And, why on earth would anyone WANT to do that?"

I quit smoking two years ago, so I do know what you are going through. I did NOT give myself permission to go "off plan" and I still gained some weight. Nicotine is powerful stuff and the chemicals in the cigarettes have been "hinkey-ing" with your metabolism as well as the sugars.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to go to induction and then straight into OWL with more veggies. Stay away from anything that will exacerbate sugar cravings (i.e. sweetened desserts, candies, drinks). It might seem very hard for the first two weeks, but it is the only thing that is going to help your situation and get those cravings under control.

        Re: Master Cleanse

That is great news to hear. The induction is really one of the best cleanses you can do... it breaks the addiction to carbs, sugar... which I believe is as powerful as nicotine... and why not beat down the demons of addiction with one swoop... Atkins is the best way to do this... why not feel full and satisfyed and not deprived while stomping all over those demons! Love your energy... Great to have you here!

Great job! It's got to be really tough trying to kick the smoking habit.

I've read that Master Cleanse before and had nightmares of lemons chasing me--I knew it wasn't for me.

I'm debating myself over this. Tuesday is day 15 and I don't know what I'll do when I wake up that morning. If I go into OWL, I see myself staying on Rung 1 for a long, long time.

You know, ValidRouge, it's been more about breaking that hand-to-mouth and chewing habit than it has been fighting urges. Does that make sense?

Hmm, you mean like right now for supper I'm having Pork Roast, Salad, and sauteed Cauliflower and Crookneck Squash instead of, oh, I don't know, lemonade with cayenne pepper in it???

                Re: Master Cleanse

Yes, I do know what you mean. Another "event" if you will, when I always reach(ed) for a cigarette was at the ending of something. When dinner was finished, when I was done with a meeting, or after a workout. Anytime something was "over" it was time to smoke. I found myself always floundering and feeling at loose ends....

                It does pass.

As for Rung 1....the honest truth is...I'm technically in maintenance. But, for me....maintenance is rung 1 and no further. So, you might be on rung 1 for longer than what you think! LOL

But wait..on second thought....the only reason I know I have to stay in rung 1 is because I went through all the rungs and found my stallers and trigger foods.

                  Re: Master Cleanse

I actually did a lot of reading about that myself and drank a few too many glasses of lemonade with cayenne pepper! What can I say, I was desperate... and who of us hasn't been there at some point? The best thing I ever did was coming back to the Atkins diet and committing to do it by the book this time.

I feel fantastic... I don't have to choke down anything yucky... have you ever drank a glass of sea salt water?? (another part of Master Cleanse) SOOO absolutely horrendously gross I can't explain it. I thought I'd die. But anything to lose weight, right? haha NEVER AGAIN!

Just glad to see I'm not the only one. Welcome back to sanity, my friend.

Read about that a while back.. knew I could never live on liquids.

My mom is doing a 'liquid protein supervised by doctors' deal. My sister is doing Weight Watchers.

I think I have it all over them!

This is a funny thread if you think about it... I did an 11 day fast too once upon a time. So glad I decided to try Atkins one more time... that was a desperate time for sure! You would have to be desperate to do it for one day.

When I did it I lost 11 lbs and gained back two... never to be seen again. But like I said, I was in a desperate situation and didn't know any better. Would not recommend it at this time. Better to eat healthy in smaller portions. But at the time, it accomplished something. I saw I could lose wt. and my headaches got better for a time. But that was a few years ago. I hadn't discovered Atkins yet. Atkins is where it's at.
