  • harder the second time?

    hi everyone,

are you finding it harder to lose the weight the second time around?

I dropped something like 9 or 10 lbs in induction the first time I did atkins, and this time, 5. holy moley. I have way more weight to lose this time, so I was really hoping for a higher number than 5!

I tried a few other diets after atkins last time. I was doing so well, then my uncle passed away and I medicated with food instead of, well, medication. my weight crept up, and then last year a different kind of traumatic event happened, and my weight skyrocketed.

anyway...is anyone finding themselves more resistant this time?

    Re: harder the second time?

I am. I figure it is my own stupid fault. I am just a few lbs. heavier than you, and my goal weight is 160. I have lost 4 pounds so far, a little over a week induction. I forgot how much I lost on induction last time, the number 12 sticks in my head.. but know it was better than I am doing now.

I have way more 'belly flab' than I did last time. I just got back from Goodwill where I tried on size 18 jeans, I can get them over the hips but man, the belly flab sticking out is unreal. I swear 10 pounds of just belly fat will have to go before these ever zip!

So I am staying on induction longer than two weeks, how about you? I think you pretty well would score 'resistant' on the metabolic resistance chart, just like I do. The good thing is, you have lost 5 pounds and made it into ketosis. That is the hardest part by far.

Regardless of how fast or slow it comes off, make it about a shift in eating and living and finding that new ground...soon the weight won't be the issue at all. I've been here almost 2 years, and it's about all I can do, and eat, not what I weigh.
If this diet really works for you, you find yourself eating less, hungering less, having more energy and steady moods...If you find you can eat and enjoy this way, then I think that is more than half the battle....Sustaining and maintaining are really the biggest factors here....
Hang in there girls, if you don't quit, the weight will come off....it's only a matter of time!

It's harder the 1001232324th time around----

Jess said it best----stick to it, do it right, focus on your long term goals (including exercise), and you WILL succeed.

True on the feeling better... head is clearer. I am not a lazy person. But when I am eating sugar it is like I am too foggyheaded to figure out what I need to be doing and do it. I do not have that problem when I am lowcarbing, I have gotten more done lately than in a month of Sundays!

              Re: harder the second time?

It's definitely been harder the second time... I'm on day 23 and on my first week of OWL and I've still only lost 9 lbs and I'm not seeing the inches come off near as quick as I'd like. However, I did some more reading and looked back at my first week of induction to see if I've gotten sloppy or missed anything and I did notice that there were a few things I could tweak... such as getting back to the gym and not going absolutely crazy with the calorie consumption (though I'm not really counting them... I promise... just taking notice is all). Anyways, I'm hopeful again and I think if we all stick with it and look ahead to the goal, we're gonna get there. Just gotta stay positive!!

I was going to extend induction, but I'm going onto OWL. TOM is due this week, which explains why I feel so bloody miserable!

I'm doing the veggies, and we'll see what stalls me from there on in. I want to get to the nut rung, heh!

                  Re: harder the second time?

This thread make me think of this old link regarding second attempts. Hopefully, a few first timers will wander to this thread and recognize the importance of staying tough and enjoying the opportunity they have while STAC members will recognize that nothing worth having is ever easy.

I did well in the early 90s on this WOE, was depressed with slow losses the next few times I dabbled with it years ago, but am having pretty fair results this time around. I think many of us try to "bend the rules" after our first time because we think we know the secrets and can skip past the strictest rules as "seasoned veterans."

In reflection, I also think I was all about the whole foods the first time around (mainly because there were no frankenfoods back then that were easily accessible). The previous few lame attempts were more about replacement bars, sugar free candy and low carb desserts than meats, eggs, salads and water. I'm finding that when I cut out all the garbage (yes, even the "legal" garbage like cheesecakes, whipped cream, jello, and sodas) my results are more typical of my first time around. I still have my occasional legal treats, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Hopefully a few modifications to your diet this time around will bring back the results you were looking for. Good luck!

                    Re: harder the second time?

So far it hasn't been too hard for me the second time around. I'm on day 8 of induction and I'm glad that I have worked through the rough spots. There have been a few. For me, I just had to decide that this was something that I am going to do no matter what.

One thing that has kept me motivated when I feel like crap and have sentimental cravings, is to come here and read other people's journals, threads and also to watch the U-tube videos that other Atkinsians have made. These are really motivating.

Like the others said, hang in there and stick with it. I plan to.

iglen, I hear ya. the first time I did atkins, I was all over the frankenfoods. I'm being a lot more careful, which is a big part of why I was so frustrated this time.

though weirdly, after starting OWL rung 1, I'm down a lb. can't complain about that, I suppose!

Here's a question... do y'all find that this time around the shakes are holding you back from losing?? I've heard that the bars do that for many people, but I've been having 1 Atkins shake every night around 9:30 or so for a snack since day 1 and I'm really hoping that I'm not going to have to give it up However, the scale has been stuck for 2 weeks and I'm having a hard time figuring out what else to let go. Dropped the chewing gum this week, we'll see if it helps. I also started on Acetyl L-Carnitine and Co Q-10.
