  • Re-starting induction, is it true you only have one shot??

I was on atkins a few yrs ago, lost 65lbs, gained it back the past 3 yrs. Now im back on atkins, i'm restarting atkins and I really went off induction for 3-4 days after doing good for a week. I feel horrible about it, but I got so frustrated from not losing and the family cookouts really got to me so I gave in. Now i'm on my day 2 of re-induction and im worried i wont lose much weight this time because its my 2nd time around. Tomorrow is day 3 and im not feeling like im in ketosis or anything

Hang in there! Give it a little more time. You may want to read through the revised 2002 edition of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution to learn more.

Who ever says you only get one shot? The 2nd shot is just not usually as easy.

Re: Re-starting induction, is it true you only have one shot??

I had to go back and research my losses. I lost 12 pounds during my first induction 4 years ago.

9 this time around. There is no 'only one shot.' There is for some, 'one golden shot,' the first time when they lose the most in induction. But it is important to understand, induction is just the starting gate. If you start a marathon a little on the slower side, isn't the important thing the finish, not the start? Once you are past induction, you will still keep losing, if you keep low-carbing. So don't be discouraged!

so you said you will keep losing once you get past induction so us 2nd timer ppl shouldn't stay on induction long and go to the next phase or?
is it bad to stay on induction for extended periods of time or should you only stay on it for a max of two weeks??

Dr. Atkins said induction was safe for up to a year, but not for someone as small as you are. The goal in OWL is definitely staying in ketosis and burning fat, just adding in foods very gradually. You won't lose weight 'slower' until you have added in enough carbs to go out of ketosis. That varies for everyone, and one of the things you learn in the later phases of OWL is 'when' or at what carb level, you personally will no longer be in ketsosis.

The first two times I did Atkins, I lost 4 pounds in the 2-week induction period each time. This time I lost 8 during induction (and I was 7 pounds lighter than the first time I did Atkins.)

I lost way better the second time around. Your 'shot' is what you make of it. You can not expect to lose a lot of weight if you get frustrated after the first week and give in to carbs. Yo-yoing will surely cause damage to your metabolism.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Re-starting induction, is it true you only have one shot??

Let me back in a second, to clarify better what I said - by harder, I refer to the fact that your body becomes more resistant to losing weight with repeated attempts. Metabolic resistance may have helped our ancestors survive repeated periods of famine by improving their energy efficiency.
So if the person starved and lost a lot before feasting and gaining back the weight, the next time he starved, his body burned less fuel in the same time, so he lasted better until the famine ended. Survival of the fittest... yuk yuk

But practice makes perfect can also apply in cases of dieting. If you do it a second time, you may know better what to do and what not to, plus it just comes more naturally, thus is done with more ease.
