  • Checking in from China

Am now back in the land of spring rolls and rice. Just over jetlag and was finally able to get a decent Internet connection tonight. I had slipped the past couple of weeks home in the US but am now getting back on a routine. I was truly scared to step on the scale after the past few weeks of stress eating but God was smiling on me because I only gained three pounds and as of this morning I am back down to 232. Yippee! sorry to bend your ears but I know some of you noticed my absence so I want you to know I have not abandoned this WOE, I am just having some internet woes that may keep my communications spotty. Re: Checking in from China

Aggh! I sent you an email a few weeks back wondering where you've been! My wife and I will be traveling to China later in the year to adopt a 1-year old girl. We've already been there once before to adopt our second son (yes, it's not always girls coming from China!), but I wasn't eating on this menu plan then. I'm wondering what I ask for this time around to stay true to this WOE, especially when we get into the mainland, less traveled areas of China. I'm counting on you to have some solutions and am VERY glad to see you haven't disappeared from this board!

By the way, where are you and how long will you be there? Wouldn't it be cool to have a meet up in China if you were anywhere near where we will be "visiting"? I'll have to update here with our itinerary once we know it...

      Re: Checking in from China

Hi Eric, I am in Guangzhou. Unfortunately I don't have many solutions for you especially when traveling the interior. When you are hosted by the Chinese they usually give you the best of what they have to offer and it is a terrible insult not to eat. If you are in the north, I'd tell them I am allergic to wheat. If in the south, tell them you are allergic to rice, but that you love vegetables and don't care for sweet flavors. If you have someone traveling and ordering with you that can help minimize the damage somewhat. I would say do the best you can and drink a lot of bottled water to keep flushing out all the sodium. If you do end up in Guangzhou, give me a call. You can PM for my number or email me. If you go to Shanghai and can choose restaurants, there is one I highly recommend. It is in the Okura, a Japanese business hotel with a buffet that is fabulous, sushi that is among the best I have ever had (no rolls, real fish you can pick off the rice base and eat on its own), and safe tasty food choices that include a fair number of low carb dishes. If you cant get around it, just do the best you can. I wish I had a magic solution but this is a tough place to low carb unless you are cooking for yourself. On the plus side, you can order any one of a number of tofu dishes and do fine. The best sauces to order are black pepper sauce, hot bean sauce (soy based), and oyster sauce. Hoisin and sweet and sour are killers.

Good luck on the adoption. I know they don't make things easy here.

        Re: Checking in from China

Thanks for the advice. We definitely end up in Guangzhou in order to get our child's papers form the US embassy. Last time we stayed at the White Swan Hotel for a couple of days although my wife claims there are other possible locations as well. How long do you expect to be in China? Like I mentioned before, we likely won't be traveling until the winter months.

          Re: Checking in from China

I am here (except for a couple of holidays) until next May when I head home for the summer. The White Swan was always the adoption choice because it was close to the consulate. I think the consulate is in Tianhe now so there are other choices for hotel. Garden Hotel, China Hotel, Westin are all nice. The Shangri-La is very nice but nowhere near anything you will need to do. Winter here until mid January is LOVELY! usually dry and in the 70s. After that you can get weather in the 60s and rainy. I would be happy to give you restaurant suggestions or anything else that I can. I would even come into town to meet you if you like but I know you will be very busy too. Let me know if I can give you tips on anything. Jill

Ni hao Dilyla, I have a friend in Shanghai at the tennis and racquet club out near the school. I bet it is easier to get stuff there, although we can get out to Hong Kong more easily. How do you find it there to follow Atkins?

I don't find it too hard here except eating out. Where are you from before Shanghai?
