  • Is it true?

    Hi All,
I am wondering if there is truth to the "rumour" that Atkins takes longer to show results once you have been on-and-off-again a few times. This time around (my, um, 100th...) I've been on plan for 20 days, and the pounds aren't coming off as quickly as they have in the past. This is not a big deal; I have patience, and am not looking for any quick fixes. I'm aware of the loss ratios you can expect during induction - but this does not answer whether weight loss takes longer on Atkins the more you've tried it. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences to share?

    Big Thanks, Big Love S.

    Re: Is it true?

I have been on Atkins a couple of times and my weight loss has been slower than the other times.... I had heard the same but can only go by my own personal experience.

It's really hard to say because you are of course older. The older you get, the harder it is. It's a lot harder for me now, at 43, than it was at 38, but my hormonal situation is different, too.

        Re: Is it true?

I think its true of any diet. Its called yo-yo dieting. Your body gets more and more resistant to change when you do that. My first time on atkins I lost so fast and so easily. Now its slow, but I think of this as a life change and not something to do temporarily to loose some weight so its okay.

          I think it's true.
I've only lost 7lbs in 6 days, before I lost a looot more in the first week. The first time I did atkins and I took it seriously I practically lost the majority of my weight in the first week. To be honest, I'm a little scare to see how things progress. I'm afraid I won't lose much weight this time around on induction, but in the long run I know I'll be able to lose all the weight that needs to melt away. Another good thing about atkins is that I know my body will re-sculpt itself with exercise even if the scale doesn't move too much.

Thanks everyone, for taking the time to record your experiences. I'm not really stressing over the progress; I'm doing my best and am not on a timeline. I know from my past experiences that things start speeding up eventually, and I am content to wait. I turned down ice-cream cake tonight, no sweat, (my two favorites combined in one marvelously sweet combo) so I think my resolve is strong enough to handle some slower progress. I'm just relieved to know that I'm not the only one out there having these observations. I've drastically cut my cheese consumption, my splenda/ sweetner allotments and am sticking with water, plain tea, and no more than 2 cups of coffee a day, so I know I'm going forward much better than on past attempts. It will come. Thanks for the encouragement. Good luck to you all!!!

            Big Love, S.

              Re: Is it true?

I did not find it true for my body at age 49. The great thing is, the effects of getting free from sugars and into ketosis are the same, energy comes, appetite diminishes, moods start to stable out....then of course the weight will come off once the body realizes you are truly sticking to it, and it might as well buckle down and burn fat! Some times, remember that initial weight loss is water loss. Carbs that convert to glycogen in the muscles also bring alot of water with it...1 part glycogen 3 parts water surround it....So at first we do shed a good bit of stored up water in our muscles....I love that feeling of getting rid of that....
Trust your body to slowly begin to burn fat and settle into this whole new fat burning metabolism....

                Re: Is it true?

I didn't find it to be true either, Jess. I'm 33 years old, have had a hysterectomy and have restarted Atkins more times than I care to admit. The last time I seriously did Atkins, I lost squat. Nada. Nuthin'.

This time around, the weight seems to be flying off! I've lost 15lbs in a little over a month - 4lbs just this week and I couldn't not be happier.

Whatever you do, stick with it. Sometimes our bodies just don't want to let go of that padding. You've got to stick with the program and show it who's boss.

                  Re: Is it true?

Still new to the board, but with my past experience, once in March and now again in September, I have found that I have lost more the second time around, but only because I think the first time I was a bit hesitant towards Atkins and then my son moving to Japan... Had heard of it but never tried it... I can say this tho': Atkins works... Don't let anyone or anything tell you otherwise... Since I started Induction on September 28, I have lost from 202 (give or take an ounce or two) down to 190.2.
And I am 41, a stay at home mom who homeschools two boys!!!! I am around "their" food all day long and not once, this time have I cheated.. I just am not hungry, nor do I WANT any of their carb rich foods.. For once in my life I am sticking to this and it will become my way of life... I see now that I cannot eat all the carbs that I want... I just can't.. I am the only one who can make this decision for me and stick to it.. I am the only one who put this weight on and I am the only one who can get it to come off... AND.... I had thyroid cancer in 2005 and had my thyroid removed and am on Synthroid....So you can lose the weight following this plan even with thyroid trouble.... Stick to it and you will see results.... Good luck!!!!!

                      Re: Is it true?

Well my situation is really different, I got pregnant ( my adorable little vacation souvenier) and although didn't gain anything crazy while pregnant(11 pounds) I sure did gain the weight immediately afterwards when I was trying to eat something quick while trying to care for a newborn who never slept. I restarted recently and to me the weight has just flown off. I really want to see 185, but before I would bottom out at around 190. Hoping that maybe this has reset that point lower and I can get smaller. I carry a lot of muscle so while that sounds BIG, me in a size 10 isn't big at all, although I would love an 8. Muscle weighs more while taking up less space, so the rest of the outside world isn't privelaged to my scale reading.
And I must say, sometimes the scale doesn't move at all, but give it a few days and then I will see a loss. And at this point any loss is a step in the right direction.
restart 16-18/8-12 (crazy sizing)/love to get into some 6's

The first time i did Atkins it was really easy. I stayed on because i was seeing results and that was my motivation. Now i hardly see results at all so i go off for a few days cause i get frustrated, then go back on and a few weeks later i have not seen any results so i go off again .. i have been doing this for the past year, and now i fear that this diet just doesnt work for me :-(

The first time, the weight was coming off alot quicker, but then again I was working out alot more strenuously. This time, the weight is still coming off, but slower, probably because I am not at my full exercise capacity level, having been sick for the last week. But I know, as I start to build up my workouts, the inches will drop and the weight will as well. So it's just a matter of mind over matter!

I knew the patience would pay off! Down 4 lbs. this week. It was just taking my body some time to get back into the swing of things. Boo-yah! Just wanted someplace appropriate to come and do my happy dance. Thanks for all the responses and encouragement out there, everyone!!! Happy Thanksgiving!
