Has anyone tried the new sweetner made from Stevia called Truvia? Does anyone know what the impact is on an Atkins plan? I rarely eat anything with artificial sweetners in it but heard that Stevia is different....
Thanks.
Carrie

I learned about Stevia long before it became mainstreamed like this. You could pick it up at health food stores. It's a natural (or was before it was manufactured and I don't know how they manufacture it now) sweetener that didn't have all of the side effects sugar does. It was so much sweeter than sugar that only a drop would be enough to sweeten something. but again the manufactures took over and has probably morphed stevia differently. I am guessing it will probably be equvillant to Splenda soon but I'll need to research it all more anyways.

What is the difference between Truvia and Stevia if Truvia is made from Stevia? What makes it different?

As far as I know Truvia is Stevia. Cargill owns it and it received FDS approval in December as a food sweetener. Coke will be using it. I was just re-reading all of my emails. I didn't think it was on the market just yet. But it must be. I will check my local markets.

Since Stevia is 30 times sweeter than sugar I believe they diluted the sweetness to a normal level. That is why it is not marketed AS Stevia because Truvia is only derived from Stevia and not truly Stevia Sweetener. Pepsi is apparently working on their own type of sweetener also derived from the Stevia plant but will be under a different name.
Stevia itself though has properties that allow diabetics to use is because it doesn't affect insulin in the body.

But if it tastes like the Stevia ( liquid ) I have, I will pass, and I am diabetic, and will stick with Splenda.

I hardly doubt it will taste like it. Coka~Cola is manufacturing it and I highly doubt they'll put a product out that tastes like Stevia did. Again it's been manufacutred from the stevia plant so I bet it tastes more like a sugar substitute than stevia.

I tried SweetLeaf which is, in theory, Stevia under a different name. One packet of SweetLeaf in my coffee and it's not bitter anymore but it doesn't taste sweet. I don't think it's as sweet as Splenda.
