  • Karate For My Soul!

I was initially excited about karate.....and then fear set in.

My son's school is offereing free classes to parents in the month of January. My son takes karate and is currently a purple belt. I got fitted for my uniform and was to return in an hour (after my son's class). I got home and didn't like how the uniform fit. I looked like a penguin. I debated about taking karate because of my weight. I didn't think I would be able to keep up. My son encouraged me to go to the class (he's 10). I drove to the school and looked into the window, planning to go back home. Something told me to just give it a try. I walked in and was greeted by the class and the instructors. One of the female instructors worked one on one with me...and I was sweating up a storm. It felt so good to have acomplished my first day of karate. I got tons of positive feedback from the instructor. I am officially a white belt. I think I will continue with karate, to keep myself in shape.

        Awesome.

I took it about 25 years ago. They offer it at the gym we go to. I might consider it.

Yes Liz and Glenda, he totally encouraged me to go. Initially I was excited, but then I saw some of the adults students and got a little scared.

Alaskagirl, I think I just might continue with it. What a great way to stay inshape.

Good for you. After I get my weight down a little I might try it again.

I remember before my back got real bad I was looking for different sports/exercise activities because the same old same old gets boring. I was thinking of taking kayaking and kick boxing and I used to love aerobics class. I completely forgot about karate.

On payday I will be getting the wii and wii sports and wii fit. I wanted to get it for Christmas but chickened out.

So, It's been about 3 weeks since I began karate. Tonight my teacher challenged me to take a tip test to earn my first black tip on my belt. I passed. I had an advantage watching my son's karate class. I am so proud. WOW! I may want to do this longer than my 3 month commitment.

                      Re: Karate For My Soul!

My son had just started karate when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He kept at it, even though his treatments made him very sick at times. He made it all the way to black belt and then became an instructor. He is mostly in remission and I give a lot of the credit to his continuing with the discipline of karate.

I can't do karate, but I am learning Tai Chi. It is very disiplined and health-giving, as well.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

I take Tai Chi every now and then. It's a good work out especially when my instructor has us do standing chi gong...whew my legs get weak!

That is so great! I was so scared to start kickboxing, but I'm on my 5th belt a year later and I LOVE it sooooo much! Great stress relief and exercise.

We should start a martial arts thread or something...

That is very nice that you kept with it scaleski I hope you stick with it long term.

I personally Take boxing, I used to do kick boxing and before that judo I havn't really found something to stick with yet. I would of stuck with Maui Thai (kick boxing).

But where I live the gym droped it for Some sort of Aerobics class which only women take I dont know the name but i know if I tried that stuff I'd tear a few parts of my body that i'd like to at least keep intact for another 20 years. Some sort of yoga or something.

Boxing or any form of martial art is a great stress reliever But it's easy to get carried away and hurt yourself like I do and make my elbows and other joints sore.
