"One day at a time"
So easy to say and so truly difficult to 'get' the meaning of that. I once worked with a group of receovering drug addicts (heroin mostly) and it was a life altering experience. We were designing programs to help people such as themselves. Such brave, strong people. Many sat at the meetings just scratching their arms, others couldn't sit down, still others fidgeted nervously in repetitive fashions. I so admired their single-minded focus. All, or most, of their psychic energy went into building their new life and mostly, staying away from their drug of choice.
Anyhow, I haven't really thought about that in a while until I've noticed here that people call food 'an addiction' - and in a way it is. But we can't completely cut it out or go 'cold turkey' - we need to 'use' in moderation.
Still, surely if those folks with severe drug addictions can overcome their demons, I feel I can overcome this as well.
"One day at a time" means to me: Let's only think about today. How will you plan the day (structure) around healthy meals, exercise, family, friends etc. What choices can I make today to live well? I'm trying to 'get' that "one day at a time" doesn't look backwards to past failures and blame and it doesn't look forwards to 'what if I fail' 'I will slip up' - it means. I will live life Today.
What does it mean for you?
