  • Tonic Water

every once in a while I get bad leg cramps that ease if I drink a glass of (diet) tonic water.

But when I looked in DANDR, tonic water was not listed as an "ok" water...is it not ok or was it an oversight? (I hope)

Tonic water is just carbonated water that sometimes has added minerals or artifical sweeteners or flavors. It is pretty much equivelent to club soda or sparkling mineral water which are okay to drink. Not really an oversight just another name for the same thing.

I'm confused though, if something has to be called "diet" wouldn't its normal, non-diet version have something in it that has calories? No other beverage I can think of is called diet and can still be considered waterish enough to be called water.

This is NOT true. Tonic water is sometimes used for leg cramps because it contains quinine. Quinine tablets were banned by the FDA because of severe complications; quinine was designed for treatment of malaria but became grossly overused when it was discovered that it also helped leg cramps.

The amount of quinine in tonic water is minute compared to the pills so it has been considered safe.

Schweppe's Diet Tonic Water contains INGREDIENTS: CARBONATED WATER, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM CITRATE, NATURAL FLAVORS, SODIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVATIVE), SACCHARIN (5.1 MG PER FLUID OUNCE), QUININE.

I think this would be OK for occasional use.
