  • Confused about Veggies

    Hi everyone,
I'm doing atkins for the second time, did it about 6 years ago, was succesful but had very little willpower =[ I'm much more motivated now, but I do have a question, hopefully its not stupid hahaha. The list of acceptable induction foods/rules says I'm only supposed to eat 3 cups of veggies. Now based on what I've found, if i do 3 cups of raw broccoli(and then it cooks down to about 1.5 cups) it comes to about 10.5 net carbs. And if thats all the veggies I'm allowed to eat, where do the rest of the carbs come from? the cheese I'm eating doesnt have carbs(according to the label) and even so, I don't eat much cheese. What else am I supposed to be eating to account for this almost 10 net carb deficit? Or is it okay if I eat more veggies? Because I actually like them...weird right? hahaha jk.
    Thanks for your help!

    Re: Confused about Veggies

You do not have to eat 20 g of (net) carbohydrate. In DANDR 2002 we are told to eat not more than 20 g. So it can be 15.

Veggies. You don't eat 3 cups of broccoli during Induction, because broccoli is on the "Other Vegetables" list. During Induction we have to eat either 3 cups of salad vegetables (from the "Salad Vegetables" list, but these can be cooked too), or 2 cups of salad vegetables and 1 cup of "other veggies" (e.g. broccoli). Do you have the book? Otherwise you can find the lists here: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html

Cheese has some carbs, but because there are less than 0.5 g per serving (a serving is 1 oz, I imagine) the manufacturer is allowed to write zero on the label. Dr. Atkins told us, as a rule of thumb, to count each ounce of cheese as 1 net carb. Keep in mind that cheese is limited to 3-4 oz per day.

You also get some carbs from eggs, spices, cream, dressings, sweeteners (if you consume any), foods in the "Special Category"... Don't forget to add those to your total too.

And make sure over half of your net carbs are coming from vegetables.

I think that's about it.... Welcome back to Atkins!

      Re: Confused about Veggies

So theoretically, if I eat 3 cups of salad veggies a day and like 1 serving of cheese and skip the other stuff with carbs I could be at 6 or 7 net carbs a day? Is that allowed? Or should I try to add more net carbs in. Also, thanks for the clarification about the broccoli, I got confused by the atkins website, I also bought some atkins products but don't worry, those are going on the top shelf for a while. And also, I'm not a big red meat fan, is it alright to stick with just chicken and fish are is that going to mess up my fat ratios? Thanks again in advance!

Forget the Atkins website & get your info from Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution~~2002 version. Also information here on ADBB. Reading the book will help clear up some of your confusion & answer your questions. I'm not sure why you would want to avoid other allowed foods that have carbs in them? Good luck!
