  • Substitute for Crunchy/Salty snacks

Please, anyone have any suggestions for foods I can replace for my love of chips? I have tried cucumbers, pickles, celery, and cheese chips. They are just ok. And pork rinds, to me, are an acquired taste, if you know what I mean.

How do you satisfy your cravings for crunchy/salty snacks?

I like pork rinds dipped in a ranch dip (low carb kind) and sometimes a french onion dip. You can also try to make a hot & cheesy salsa dip by microwaving shredded cheddar cheese mixed with cream cheese and salsa. Stir well.
You also might try to make your own homemade chips using maybe Jicama, turnips, or something similar? Fry them thin and then salt them. I have never done it but I think I read about it somewhere. I hope more folks answer this as I am curious too.

Not sure what phase or level you are on but when I started Atkins, I found Linda Sue's recipes for Cheezits or chicken cracklings did the trick.

Note: When making Cheezits use the Deli Deluxe American not the individually wrapped singles. They are in the same section in the grocery store. And make sure you use parchment paper, not waxed paper.

p.s. Don't care for pork rinds either. Out of curiosity I bought a small bag and had one bite...that was enough for me with that experiment. LOL

You've restarted Induction many times and, from your posts, I think you never moved to OWL. What makes it difficult for you to stick to Atkins?

Cameo - I know it's tough in the beginning - I was a huge chip fan...but after a while, you lose your cravings. Just stick it out, eat on plan and you will get there!

I do agree with those above, I did try the little cheese crackers, and they were very good.

            Good luck.

How about pickles? I made a batch of my own last night with cucumbers and jalapenos. I don't have the recipe quite right, but I'm sure there's no added sugar because I made them myself.

                Re: Substitute for Crunchy/Salty snacks

For induction you can have veggies with ranch...
                Too borning? lol..

Then you can make zucchini or califlower 'chips'.. they're yummy.

I ♥ fried cheese... but keep it in your limits!! lol.

Turkey peperoni (sp?) with a little cheese on top cooked in the microwave = mmm.

When you can have nuts - they're always good, crunchy and salty - but way to easy to over consume... so careful.

I also make flax 'crackers'... it's easy and I think they taste good with a little splenda and cinnomon added.. Your induction max for flax should make like 4 mini crackers.

You can also make calliflower 'popcorn'..

When you get to the rung - one of my FAVS is sweet potato chips, sometimes sprinkled with a little Splenda and cinnomon... SO good and so easy to make. There's also a brand called Terra (I think) - they make all natural 'chips' out of veggies. I've gotten the sweet potato ones before, per the ingrediants they just use the veggie and oil - they don't even add salt!!
I only had them a few times because they're way easy to over eat!! lol

Ooh there's TONS of things you can make, check out the recipies!

... just want to mention too - sometimes when you're really craving a certain food it's best to avoid it if you can.. better to break those habits and addictions..
That doesn't mean you'll never eat those foods again, just break the cycle!!

Hi, I love all the suggestions in this post....I also have a thing for salty & crunchy.....I make crisps from parsnips & carrots, simply peel thin strips with veggie peeler & deep fry/salt. Also bake parmesan crisps in oven (I love cheese). Luckily I do like pork rinds but, as the others have said, its very easy to eat too many so, be careful :0)

Great idea with the parsnips...I can't have carrots yet, but can I have parnsips in induction? I think I can have turnips right? I wonder if you can do that with Jicama? I love Jicama!! I love dicing it into little squares and frying it like potato hashbrowns kinda....also goes great with some homemade corned beef precooked and shredded with it for a homemade mock corned beef hash!

Nope. No parsnips until OWL Rung 8.

I think I can have turnips right?
Turnips are on the Acceptable Foods List for Induction.

What makes it difficult? Well, I can think of several things I can say, but they will all probably sound like excuses. I just need to prepare better, focus, etc. I am hoping not to be judged, because I have done it before and I can do it again. I did Atkins before in '03 and lost 24 pounds and 22 inches. It was great!

It seemed easier then. I had my hubby doing the diet with me at the time, and this time he's not interested.

Thank you to those that posted the great suggestions for snacks I can try. I will be making a few.

                          Re: Substitute for Crunchy/Salty snacks

I have a little recipe I whip up when I need chips for something. It's actually one I use to make a tortilla and then just cook it a bit in the micro to crisp up when I need a chip. Can be dipped in a friendly salsa.

                          Tortilla:
                          Makes 1

Get to two small bowls or mugs. In one, stir together one egg, 1 tsp oil, and about 3/4 T cream cheese. In the other, mix together on Tbsp ground golden flaxmeal, 1/4 tsp baking powder, and a few dashes of salt. Pour one into the other and combine well. Should be the consistency of like a thick pancake batter. In a cool skillet sprayed well with cooking spray, pour in batter and spread out with back of spoon to size of a tortilla. Reduce heat and let it brown on one side. Flip with large spatula and lightly toast other side. (This is the tortilla). To make chips, remove tortilla to micro safe plate. Cut into wedges with pizza cutter. Place in micro for 15 second intervals, turning wedges over, until they harden. Don't go too long or they will burn.

These are my Doritos-type chips I've developed and they are amazing. They are induction friendly (minus the popcorn seasoning). I use them for nachos. I also use the dehydrator for two hours after baking rather than letting them sit on the counter now.

                            Zucchini Doritos-style chips

                            1 large zucchini, shredded
                            2 eggs
                            2 cups cheese

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

                            Grease 2 cookie sheets.

Cut ends from zucchini. Shred. Mix with egg and cheese. Make 6-8” circles on greased cookie sheet(s). Bake at 450 degrees for 12 minutes. Loosen and flip the circles. Bake for another 5 minutes at 450 degrees.

With a pizza cutter, cut rounds into triangles (about 6 per round).

Let cool on a rack for 6-8 hours in a cool oven. To store, keep loosely in a bag or a plastic container in the refrigerator or on the counter. Best used within a week of preparation. After chips have dried substantially, in a plastic container toss with popcorn seasoning for desired flavor.
                            Makes 36 chips.

Oh My God!!! Where have these been all my life! Doritos are my kryptonite. I also only eat two vegetables, cauliflower and cucumbers. This will add a third to my repitoire. I am going to the store. I just got back from the store, but I am going again.
